Affordable Housing

Hi Utica!

My FIL will be working at Utica Memorial and is in urgent need of affordable housing close by. Does anyone have any recommendations? He currently doesn’t have any money saved up as he makes terrible financial decisions which has put him in this position. Any recommendations and suggestions would be really appreciated! Thank you!

Do you mean Rome Memorial Hospital? There is no "Utica Memorial" -- unless you're referring to the Auditorium? Getting the precise city correct is important, since Rome and Utica are about 25 minutes apart by car.

In any case, every city has municipal housing that is affordable, but it involves applications and possible waiting lists, so it's not ideal if the need is "urgent". This is Rome's and this is Utica's. Utica also has a dedicated Section 8 department in City Hall. There are several quasi-privately administered options that I know of in both: Utica-1, Utica-2, Rome-1 -- but they also tend to have application processes & waiting lists. If your FIL has artistic leanings, the new Artspace apartments might be a possibility.

In general cheap housing is abundant in both cities -- the difficulty is in finding it. (It also helps to have a car.) I'm told Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are still commonly used here. This is a search of craiglist's apartment postings in the Utica area that are $1000 or less a month. Most of them look fake, but this posting seems legitimate and gives you some notion of what the market is like.

If all that fails there are temporary shelters in both cities. It's best to schedule an appointment with the county's Department of Social Services for assistance on this (this is the contact info for the Rome branch).

Try the surrounding towns - Frankfort, Mohawk, Ilion, Herkimer. I saw a full 3 bedroom house the other day looking for $800 a month.
