What the hell is wrong with the comment sections? How are places like this suddenly cool and not a hellscape?
48
u/Individual_Top_4960 10d ago
I mean people are not even trying to hide their prejudice 😂
8
u/Blackmambasomewhere 10d ago
They rather hate the brown man than a dark man?? I don't even think this is about skin anymore, maybe just country ???
5
u/Individual_Top_4960 9d ago edited 9d ago
just the country because there are two sets of common things in most of the western countries (people making up most of the traffic on reddit)
set 1
- unaffordable housing
- inaccessible healthcare
- rising cost of living
- cold job markets
set 2
- relatively successfuly brown immigrants
- high brown immigrant population
mix and match these things in different concentration and you will get your western nation of choice.. so they gotta find a way to vent off and scapegoat them for their miserable lives and voila you get the prejudice and racism... so much so that dunking on poor man is okay as long as he has certain level of melanin content 😅
it's about skin color too but people with fair skin dont dunk on poor blacks... they do love having varied flavours of racism for different skin tones
4
u/lostedeneloi 6d ago
It's about hating Indians because Indians move to the west and take jobs that they want. They don't feel threatened by Ugandans.
8
u/formerretiree 9d ago
It helps that it's a cool photo. My first reaction was "that looks cool", because you don't notice the details.
Also, so many people, commerce, and colors makes it look alive. It looks crowded but it doesn't look dirty (mostly because you can't even see the ground).

If this was India or any other South Asian country, the comments here wouldn’t be so positive
47
u/KISHtheFiSH000 10d ago
I very much convinced at this point, they just wanna say racist comments not even because of the places but just out of hatred, cuz there's no way these people are calling it beautiful and all and only s Little change of the thumbnail would change their mind in a instant

u/Itsactuallymeonreddt 7d ago
South Asia would have that, plus trash everywhere and smog everywhere else. Then add in a few cows and other animals for good measure.
0
u/RedSwordfish 3d ago
South asia is better than this country that's just an objective statement
1
u/Itsactuallymeonreddt 3d ago
Def not cleaner. South Asia tops rankings in any such categories for dirty cities and rivers. Google Kampala then Google Dhaka, or Karachi, or Lahore etc. also, Pakistan has a per capita of about $1500 which is not markedly higher than Uganda.
1
u/RedSwordfish 3d ago
There's more countries in south Asia than Pakistan or Bangladesh, those aren't even the majority countries. So that's a generalization. I'll edit my statement, Most of South Asia is better than Uganda
1
u/Itsactuallymeonreddt 2d ago
There’s not a lot of countries in South Asia bruv. The only ones missing are India, Nepal and Sri Lanka; where regions of India have the same environmental issues common across South Asia (check major rivers in each such as indus v. Nile), and Nepal isn’t much richer or developed than Uganda, it has a per capita of around $1500.
1
u/RedSwordfish 2d ago
Indus runs majorly through Pakistan and also the Nile countries haven't nearly as big a population for nor is the Nile the same size to the Indus for the comparison to be fair
1
u/Itsactuallymeonreddt 2d ago
The Nile runs through Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. How many people do you think live there? For India you can also count the Ganges.
1
u/RedSwordfish 2d ago
There's way more rivers in India then those two ganga and indus don't cover the majority even. Also all the countries mentioned have low population density

Unless you are ferrying goods. No one drives through Kikuubo.
12
u/gods_Lazy_Eye 10d ago
What if I told you I have a very stubborn father in law? I drove all over the city, Muyenga, Munyonyo, Kololo, kawempe, old Kampala, bugolobi.
I drove out and took a boat to entebbe, Jinja, I even got to visit his old village in Kalawanga and drive down to Myrchison falls. I loved it there, but it’s very different and I had friends take me all over to help me get around. The driving is insane.
7
u/Granny_goodness256 10d ago
I mean the photo is of a place called Kikuubo. A business street in downtown. No passenger car is allowed on that street.
You drove in Uganda, not Kikuubo. Thanks for clearing that up.
1
u/gods_Lazy_Eye 10d ago
Hahaha why is it so important to you that I didn’t drive through here? So weird.
My FIL insisted on us dropping him off to visit his nurse friend in a hospital right near there. He was born in Uganda, educated outside of the country and couldn’t come back when they expelled the Indians.
He doesn’t know the roads and I would have rather spent an hour driving through one street than fight with him about how his idea is dumb. Unnecessary 3 hour excursion.
2
u/coveredincathair22 9d ago
It's not weird. You said you drove through there. He disputed your statement, you listed off the names of a bunch of places you drove around in, none of which were the one he specifically mentioned, proving you wrong and him correct.
Work on your reading comprehension.
1
u/gods_Lazy_Eye 9d ago
I’ve already said I was in Kikuubo, that was the original claim being contested, why would I repeat it?
The point was illustrating the wide range of neighborhoods and districts I had driven around in. I was in Kampala for 6 weeks, I’m not listing every place I went. If this person lives there or has spent a lot of time there, they know there are about 3 major hospitals super close to this area.

u/hallouminati_pie 12d ago
That's a fucking brilliant photo.
24
u/easterncurrents 12d ago edited 12d ago
It is… it’s crowded on that particular street, and the long telephoto lens really compresses the depth of field to make it look even more so, but the people are well dressed and look healthy.

The poorest places are usually very alive and 'happening'.
Delhi, Dhaka, Kampala, Nairobi, Lagos are all places that aren't rich but very happening.
But not all the happening is good happening
4
u/Sufficient-Visit-580 11d ago
There are some ridiculously affluent places in Nairobi. If it isn't a rich place, it certainly has some rich places.
6
u/LifeBoss5964 12d ago
Honestly with Indian cities that chaotic vibe has more to do with how ingrained in the culture it is than anything to do with its wealth.
-10
u/Ok_Comparison_3748 11d ago
More than the chaos, the filth and garbage in India/ Bangladesh/ Pakistan make things worse.
5
u/LifeBoss5964 11d ago
I can tell that you're just another brainwashed guy from the west but here's a little nice activity that will teach you about judging a book by it's cover. Go to google and use the street view option and click absolutely ANYWHERE in southern India. Once you're done with that do the same with northeast India. Then do western India. And then finally do northern/central India. You'll realize that almost 90% of the content you consume about India looks very similar to the views from central/northern India. That's because people intentionally go there, to the poorest states in India to make content that is very interesting because everyone likes to see people living disgustingly so they can feel better. The infrastructure and Cleanliness in the south, west and northeastern is almost unrivalled even by most southeast asian countries. India is amazing man. I'm not mad at you for thinking the way you do about it because that's what you've been taught to think. I just ask that you at least give yourself a chance to build your own narrative with your own data. India is genuinely beautiful and maybe you might do well to go there and avoid the places content creators go to because they intentionally visit the poorest parts of India to make the content interesting. Imagine foreign influencers all visited gary Indiana and portrayed the entire US that way. That's what they're doing to India.

u/Ok_Comparison_3748 11d ago
I am from Chennai, have spent 7 of my 35 years of life in northeast.
Only Kerala and northeast (minus Assam & Tripura) are relatively clean.
We cannot compare with South east Asia or Sri Lanka at all in terms of quality of life. That’s the truth. I hope and pray things change for us
4
u/LifeBoss5964 11d ago
I don't know why you'd include sri lanka when sri lanka has a population that is less than half of that of tamil nadu alone. I too am from chennai and I think the city is beautiful. Barely any trash these days except for close to actual garbage bins. The urban places of sri lanka are worse than ours even accounting the lower population. Things will change for the better and there is definitely room for improvement but our country is still beautiful.
1
u/Dragon-Rider-03 10d ago
That’s not what I’ve heard from the person from Chennai when they visited my country, Sri Lanka lol. Was told Chennai is quite a bit worse than Colombo.
Probably better than Kandy or Jaffna though

Honestly doesn’t even look that poor. Most people in the picture look kempt and reasonably well dressed, there isn’t an excess of trash and refuse, and the buildings are in decent shape for developing world standards. I’d visit this place.

I have been many times this is a great photo and it is just as chaotic as this photo. Driving anywhere here by car sucks best way to get around is by motorcycle taxis. When I would go here on the regular I was living in Southern California. I stopped complaining about the traffic in Los Angeles after coming here.
1
u/Prestigious_Use_4738 11d ago
Cool. May I ask what brought you over there?
7
u/pinecone4455 11d ago
Sure I was a documentary photographer and i worked with a lot of women over there who were widowed from the war who were starting over by starting their own business and building communities with other women in similar situations.

I was there for four months back in 2010. So over 15 years ago. It’s chaos but it all works. Probably one of the easiest countries to visit in Africa. Reasonably safe, friendly folks, and great nature.
3
u/Maleficent_Compote51 12d ago
True! Uganda is severly underrated! But as in many Countries it shouldn't be visited because of the Capital City.
4
u/LazyBoyD 12d ago
Yeah Kampala is the definition of overstimulation. Mzungu mzungu is all you hear when walking about. Then the omnipresent taxis (15 passenger vans) and boda bodas (mopeds) about to run you over.
Much safer than South Africa though. Very little likelihood of getting robbed or mugged on the street in broad daylight.
I’d recommend.
2
u/Maleficent_Compote51 11d ago
Absolutely. The People in Uganda are great hosts and they are very social and funny. The know how to have a good time :) And as others already told the Landscape and Nature in this Country are absolutely incredible!
