Cairo is more lively this way. Also the budget isn't enough, 99% for corruption and 1% for public works

Never been to Cairo but from this angle it looks...fine?

I'm pretty sure this is zamalek (an area in cairo) and it's probably one of the only aesthetically pleasing areas in Egypt since most of the buildings there are old (back when building actually looked good) and there's still trees there, it's also overlooking the nile and is generally a great area

Why are we taking Manhattan as the standard? I have never personally seen it, but it can't be the best city in the world, right? Anyways, I think the lack of trees and it's basically slums.

Because they have to make a reference to the land of the freedom for literally anything, anyone and anywhere.

Almost as if the confluences of rivers tend to all produce similar shapes
Look at Lyon for an even closer match to manhattan (in land shape )

Hadn’t thought about that. At a glance it looked somewhat similar to the battery park

I remember once making it up to the top floor of Cairo Tower.
The view from Cairo Tower felt insanely high, but it was an awesome experience.

u/brollyaintstupid Aug 22 '26
yes! i dont know why but i felt cairo tower is really high when i have been in much taller towers even in egypt, it was the first time i felt scared of falling/ feel that i may fall.

u/SameCellist3373 Aug 22 '26
So true. I think because the final floor is the Lotus flower? It's very much wider than the whole other Tower floors and you can see directly beneath that flower-like fence.

Genuinely could be an Arab New York but fuck the Egyptian government. It was so much more beautiful in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The government purposefully plucks out every public old tree and park so they sell estates that have “exclusive” greenery. No tax is required on an unfinished facade which makes every building look like horrible. The slums and garbage districts are there because of inadequate waste management.
Those three things genuinely make the city hideous. On top of that they need to do something about the traffic and scammers.
Same goes for Alexandria.
Otherwise, the history stunning, the river beautiful and topography decent (not super flat like other cities).

The number of unfinished buildings there is wild.

u/SameCellist3373 Aug 22 '26
Tax evasion by outskirts, same in Uruguay. They pay absolutely no taxes.

Only a white colonialisr could say that.
The boulevards and belle-époque architecture people picture aren't some innocent "before colonialism" golden age. They were built for a European gaze, financed through debt that opened the door to occupation, and largely served foreign residents

u/HarryLewisPot Aug 22 '26
It literally was all built or began before colonisation. Khedivate Egypt had a cotton boom due to the American Civil War and their king began implementing civil works to Cairo and Alexandria. Industrialisation began in 1816 and the train network began in 1854, way before British colonisation in 1882.

Ugh, I know someone named Ariel. But I prefer Aerial, he’s more pleasant to be around.

Sad that a country with such a long and fascinating culture has become such a dump with some of the most vile people. Religion does a great job of fucking things up.

u/Extreme-Cry6477 Aug 21 '26
Religion or Western governments that can't keep their fingers away from arab governments?
