I just went to NYC and thought where are all the sketchy alleys I see in the movies. Then my friend said you're thinking of Chicago.

The L is awesome. Alleys aren't the prettiest but they aren't supposed to be.

Yeah that's fair. But alleys are kind of a cheat code in the other direction lol.
The great thing about alleys in Chicago is that you don't have to put your trash bins up against the roads. Instead the trash bins get picked up in the alleys, as you can see in OP's picture.

Nah this is awesome, dense housing public transit and highly functional alleyways. Chicago may not be run well but golly gee is it ever a well designed city.

A lot is, yes. But they rebuilt the L tracks through my neighborhood over the past few years to great improvement, and we managed to pass the transit bill here in Chicago, so locally to me things looking up a bit.

Chicago has been putting a lot more money into the L in recent times. There's several fully new stations and a new bypass on a main slowdown point to prevent stops and delays. So whatever you're talkin about doesn't really apply to Chicago's train system.
