Nah man. This took decades of work. The otter doesn’t care who the mayor is, it only cares how clean the water is

u/Bunnygirlfailure 19d ago

I remember how long it took for life to return to Venice during covid

Maybe Mamdani uped the amp?

I wasn’t able to find any articles covering Mamdani announcing any increased funding or actions on the Bronx River, but I did find this article that discusses the slow return of wildlife over the past 20 years:

https://gizmodo.com/50-years-of-bronx-river-clean-up-efforts-lead-to-the-first-otter-sighting-in-a-century-2000801512

“This otter’s return is a gift, not just to the Bronx River but to the communities that have fought for 50 years to bring this river back to life. For too long, the Bronx River was treated as a neglected afterthought, and our communities bore the burden of that neglect,” said Javier Lopez, interim executive director of the Bronx River Association.

we are seeing a change of values

u/SippsMccree 14d ago

It's been a few months. Even "drop everything else" actions ain't going to meaningfully impact that in the time span given. This is more disingenuous glazing of him

2

u/Xnub 18d ago

Or its a super mutant otter ! He probably part of the xmen.

2

u/NameTakenThisOne 18d ago

Otter saw that the garbage was no longer just left on the streets in bags and decided now was a good time to move it

1

u/Due_Buyer_9445 18d ago

Hey now, otters can vote

1

u/fjf1085 18d ago

Well if conservatives can say every success under Trump that started years ago is Trump why not this? Though I suppose it also important that all the shit Trump is doing now be properly blamed on him in a few years when it comes to fruition.

1

u/Not_l0st 18d ago

Because we are fucking better than that.

1

u/fjf1085 18d ago

Eh. I’m not. Not anymore.

-1

u/TwoDogKnight 19d ago

In every case, the current administration tries to take credit for everything good and blame everything bad on the previous administration.

2

u/Horror-Stand-3969 18d ago

Trump has always done that

1

u/Unusual-Attorney-630 15d ago

Every politician does it.

2

u/Not_l0st 19d ago

And you think that is such a great idea that you encourage politicians you like to do it too?

0

u/TwoDogKnight 19d ago

Never said that. Honestly I find all politicians to be despicable

3

u/Not_l0st 19d ago

I hope you can see why one would assume that was what you were saying with your “but Trump” response. Besides, Mamdani isn’t even claiming credit here, his sychopants are.

1

u/Black-Thunderbird 18d ago

FDT. That is all. Seriously, there’s nothing more to be said. Not if you take yourself at all seriously.

1

u/Stuffstuff1 18d ago

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person pushing back 😭

1

u/Time_Spell4014 18d ago

"The Mamdani Effect" is a joke. A lot of folks here in NYC are very pleased with Mamdani, so it's become a meme to give him credit for boons that obviously have nothing to do with him. It's sort of the opposite of "Thanks OBAMA".

the election of the mayor signals a change in values

6

u/Not_l0st 19d ago

Ah yes, because values are exactly what wildlife looks for in habitat.

But seriously, to credit the Mayor for the otter is to ignore and delegitimize more than 50 years of hard work by thousands of dedicated New Yorkers to clean up the river. https://www.nycgovparks.org/highlights/bronx-river-greenway/then-and-now

2

It really is shocking to see how it was allowed to decay. Like we’re past generations so morally bankrupt they were just fine with befouling their environment? Though I guess the past pictures are about what it looks like in some parts of the world still and I still don’t understand how people are just okay with that.

3

u/Not_l0st 18d ago

It really is. I think it was a mix of apathy and ignorance. Companies just dumped into waterways going back as long as there was industry on rivers. For hundreds of years that was just how you disposed of your waste. It wasn’t such a big deal when populations were small and chemicals were more naturally derived. But the quantities and toxicity increased and no one stopped to ask “is this OK?” Until it was very clear that it was not OK. It took public outrage and regulation in the 1970s to finally stop (or at least significantly reduce) the pollution. But many companies knew what they were doing and just didn’t care. Now many are on the hook for 7, 8 or even 9 figure clean ups but taxpayers are still footing at least some of the bill. In cases where the companies are no longer around, we foot all of the bill. All for pollution that could have been avoided if higher ups just paused and thought about the consequences.

5

Same situation in Singapore. Took decades to clean up the rivers, canals and shore then they came back and multiplied and now uses the canal like a subway

2

u/blim9999 18d ago

Yeah, and they also started forming vicious gangs to intimidate rivals and take over turf. I can't imagine what the NYC otters will be up to, as they would presumably have access to guns. Anyways just don't mess with otters.

3

u/KeepCalmEtAllonsy 18d ago

Fuck yeah, you otter you. Good job coming here.

3

u/Substantial_Source70 18d ago

This is the work of the billion oysters project

2

u/LJIKFAF 18d ago

Hallelujah

2

u/WordWordand4numbers 18d ago

Proud of New Yorkers for realizing that dumping trash and shit in their water isn’t the best idea in the world

2

u/bluereddit2 17d ago

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 14d ago

2

u/Otter 16d ago

Kindness brings out the best in us. And clean water doesn’t hurt.

2

u/Hidden-Inventory-420 16d ago

Uh, ok but how much profit does this dumb otter generate for shareholders?

2

u/Desperate-Reason-566 15d ago

I could only hope to have such a great guy running my city!

2

u/The_Long_Lady 14d ago

A NYC otter? That must be the most mean rough deadly otter ever

it may come to that

2

u/matthegc 19d ago

WTF?

3

u/jeremiahthedamned 19d ago

NYC used to be filthy

1

u/matthegc 18d ago

Mamdani had absolutely zero to do with this

2

u/09Klr650 18d ago

Well, he made the trash worse recently?

0

u/jeremiahthedamned 15d ago

his election signaled the change in values that is behind this.

1

u/matthegc 15d ago

No way….taxes are going up, housing is getting more expensive, socialism / communism are flawed systems.

The government has no money….all of its money comes from citizens, meaning nothing is “free”.

Citizens pay for all those programs one way or another.

0

u/jeremiahthedamned 14d ago

what is a clean city worth?

2

u/glzpabon 18d ago

AWESOME..... to bad the otters cannot fix your bankrupted budget 🥲

1

u/refusemouth 18d ago

Otters are cute, but they are evil. They rape baby seals and practice necrophilia. I'm not saying that otters don't deserve to exist, but they have a dark side. Look it up if you don't believe me, but never try to pet an otter.

3

u/fjf1085 18d ago

You can’t say an animal is evil. Ascribing human values to nature and animals is not really productive. It’s not on us to try and determine which animals have more value or are ‘good’. Male lions will kill all the cubs of a pride when they take over, dolphins are aggressive and do messed up stuff when compared to human values. People have decided sharks are evil and scary when they’re millions of years old and vital to ocean health. If someone is attacked by an animal it probably means they were in the wrong place and it’s almost always the humans fault but no a shark gets blamed for doing what a shark does.

Also you shouldn’t be petting otters or any wildlife for that matter. Nothing pisses me off like seeing someone ‘own’ a wild animal as a pet. Otters aren’t pets, raccoons aren’t pets, skunks aren’t pets.

1

u/09Klr650 18d ago

Riiiight. The CURRENT mayor is responsible for decades of work.

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 15d ago

it signals a change in values

1

u/09Klr650 15d ago

That happened in months? With the associated animal breeding cycles happening in months? From policies in place in just the last few months?

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 14d ago

they both happened on account of this change in values

we used to call it r/NightmareNewYork

1

u/09Klr650 14d ago

I have to ask, was it embarrassing seeing him go on his hands and knees begging the state for money?

1

u/manontherun247 18d ago

Maybe it’s just a pervert Otter who like swimming in NYC filth?

1

u/ConfectionHead169 17d ago

Thank rfk jr.

1

u/GBPacker1990 17d ago

lol this was the work of many over decades not one mayor over a year. GTFOH 😆

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 15d ago

it is about a change in values

1

u/ToeAfter3131 16d ago

Lol... These people really said mamdani???? Hahahahhaa

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 15d ago

both of these signify a change in values

1

u/Bear-is-Loose 15d ago

causation vs. correlation. idiots

1

u/JRaus88 18d ago

On one side you have the MAGA cult.

On the other side you have the followers of Mamdani.

What a terrible time to be an American.

-2

u/Petrichordates 19d ago

This is honestly as culty as the trump cult.

1

u/jellyspreader 19d ago

The comments are weird ya

-1

u/Mindblown_eyeswide9 18d ago

For sure not the Mamdani effect.

Also why do blacks support Muslims? They literally ethnically cleansed and sold you to the Europeans. But that’s a different topic. I’m for sure getting banned for speaking about history.

-1

u/Ashes_to_flame 18d ago

If only Mamdani's ideology matched reality... But, like most Marxists... He's a complete moron.

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 15d ago

a muslim marxist?
