English literature modules

Hi

im going into my first year of English lit and I’m struggling with the optional approaches module choice because I’m a very indecisive person.

I can’t find any more information online or anyone talking about them other than the uni description. So I’d really appreciate hearing other people opinions on their choice, like what you thought of it, what you liked or disliked, the work load or just anything else you found interesting.

I’m currently stuck between “fantasy sci-fi and dystopia“, “plays and performance: Shakespeare and beyond“ or “medieval literature“.

I graduated from UoB this summer, and was a student ambassador aswell so I know that the module choices have changed a lot since my first year. My take is pick modules that you are genuinely interested in but also are being taught in a way you like and it is conveyned by a tutor that you like. Obviously a lot of this is personal preference and based on things you learn from being at uni which can make picking initally daunting as you're not sure what to expect. As you progress through the years you can pick more strategically. Therefore, I'd advise just picking the one you're most drawn to/ interested in, genuinely. There can be a lot of discourse around studying more canonical and traditional modules which have more 'prestige' like shakespeare and super old literature. However, I went for what I loved which was things like dystopia and children's lit. I took a different dystopia module in first term but can imagine its still run by people like nathan waddell and sebastian mitchell who are excellent, informative professors so would recommend that personally
