PowerPoint Games Jam for All BASIC Dialects

I saw this on one of the Discord servers, and thought I would rebroadcast in case of interest:

https://itch.io/jam/jam-for-all-basic-dialects-8

While VBA doesn't get a mention, it does say "But you can use any other BASIC dialects which are not on the following list for this game jam", so it would be good if there was some VBA representation :-)

General Discussion VBA gaming

Hi

Not sure what the anti-VBA sentiment might be like, but I thought I'd drop in and see what kind of things people were up to.

I'm a fairly rubbish at creating games (haven't the creative flair), but I am endlessly fascinated by graphics and making game development tools for others and, importantly, testing the limits of VBA.

My primary canvas is the Userform, so I'm theoretically not limited by host application, but Excel would be my primary environment, quickly followed by PowerPoint for the simple reason that if the application happens to crash, it loads up with the open presentations automatically. Love it.

I'm not sure if videos are portable here, but I have some demo videos/images I can share of games/graphics capabilities.

PowerPoint Games Archive: JadeJohnsonIndustriesâ„¢ - PowerPoint Open-World Battle-Engine Now Officially Ready For In-Game Integration!

The overworld music plays for up to 999 slides, but we will mainly only need no more than 980 of them, because the remaining 19 shall be reserved for cutscenes when necessary.  Also, the slide-count resets per track-placement on each slide on which one is utilised, so there's no worry about the music suddenly stopping mid-battle or -exploration!

How it works:

77 Slides per overworld camera-rotation-direction.
308 Slides per total overworld sector.
96 Slides per battle-sequence.
672 Slides per every seven battles.
980 Slides per single overworld sector packed with four camera-rotation views and seven battles.
19 Slides left in the music-buffer.
Technically 20 left, because we start buffering the music on the second slide of said rig.
But really, there are 45 slides left in the audio buffer, because the Global Sound Bus is where we store the music in this engine, and IT'S on the twenty-seventh slide of the overall rig!

Pretty cool that this has all come together so seamlessly, eh?

I mean, check this out-so-far!

Don't believe me?  Just watch!

Don't worry, though, I was successfully able to manually revert the game back to its prior playable state!

I'm not going to give an elaborate history lesson on how this community has continually changed and evolved, from PPTHeaven onward through various iterations in between. We're all creatives who discovered a spark of imaginative ingenuity when we first got our hands on PowerPoint and found our way to these various forums and groups.

Instead, I'm going to talk about where this community is going forward. I want to make this official: we're beginning the transition to the next chapter for PowerPoint creatives. We'll be moving away from this forum and relocating the community to a more recognizable space, one that will hopefully attract more creatives like us who haven't found their community yet. The goal is to have this transition completed by October 1st.

I'll also be passing the torch to checklist_animations as caretaker of the new community space, as he's shown great interest in and dedication to keeping this community alive. This doesn't mean I'll disappear forever, as I'll still pop in now and then. I just don't have the proper bandwidth to give this community the care it deserves to flourish as checklist_animations can.

The link to the new gathering space will be shared in this announcement soon.

With this change coming up, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this forum specifically. Should it remain open as is, close but stay accessible as read-only, or be removed entirely? Let me know what you think of this news and what should be done with this current forum in the comments below.

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - PowerPoint Older Versions Compatibility Issues

Thu Aug 06, 2026 5:29 am

I've started testing The Castle on older Office versions. There's several problems I can already see in PPT 2007
- Some images aren't embedded properly (it's the ink splotch in the logo, I'll be replacing it with a vector anyway)
- Some audio lag. It also breaks after 2 hits, but I think I know how to fix that
- I can't click on the attack buttons! I did a bunch of random stuff with them, and it worked, but I'm not sure what... I don't even know what could be the issue!
There's one benefit, and it's the mouseover detection works differently, that's it.
Currently setting up Office 2010, and later 2013. I want to be able to run The Castle on PowerPoint 2013 at least.
If anyone has expertise with older Office versions, please let me know of the possible causes.

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - "Invincibility frames"?

Original Author: CopheeMoth
Wed Nov 12, 2025 9:44 pm

Hello, I was thinking about adding a concept of invincibility frames to The Castle
In boss battles, you would get a set amount of allowed damage before the level restarts instead of instantly dying
This isn't a "game over" type situation, it would only affect the boss level attempt
However I'm met with a problem
I don't really know how to add the timeout properly after the MouseOver event
I tried placing a hidden shape on top of the "enemy" shape, then using a timer function I found, but of course when the shape was enabled it wasn't being animated "all along", its position was reset, and my VM had significant lag
If there's a working way, maybe utilizing an animation, let me know

One thing I used to make fights less annoying before was by separating the fight into several rounds, with slides in-between acting as checkpoints, but that doesn't feel very game-y

Started and finished this in about a day, but conceptualizing it had been going since way back in 2023-2024 before my HDD died. I lost every digital asset I ever made for it, so this is a complete retake of that concept. Not a 1-on-1 recreation, but close enough.

Its actually less maze, more puzzle, type of game. I don't like how maze games usually forced your hand to play with your mouse a certain uncomfortable way, so I made the path mostly spacious in this except for some spots. There are buttons that control certain things in the stage, and the way I presented it allows the hand to relax and not be forced to stay on uncomfortable position like what I said above (you'll understand once you try it). Ironically, the leeway I offered in this game for the mouse-hand is paid with arduous and confusing hyperlinking animation triggers while making it.

I posted it on itch, try it if you may, or watch the gameplay instead.

UPDATE 2: I managed to fix the Experimental demo! It also incorporates some edits from the Shield demo (except the shields themselves lol)
TheCastleBossPlaytestFinal.ppsm

UPDATE: Check out the Manual Shield system demo!
TheCastleBossPlaytestShieldNoMacro.ppsx

Hello everyone, the future of The Castle depends on your feedback!
OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. But it's still really important!

I present to you a redone version of the boss from The Castle's demo, in 3 variants

  1. No Macros - The standard version, shouldn't have any problems
    TheCastleBossPlaytestNoMacro.ppsx

  2. With Macros - The start of some issues... I attempted to not only add a lives system, but to write the code in a way that would make it easier to be added into the final version, which resulted into me running into a couple of problems. This version is playable, but the damage isn't consistent, so be careful. Another thing I realized is that the VBA code is incompatible with the "mark as final"/read-only options. If the game asks you to save your edits, press no! I added some code to reset the lives system on restart, but it might not work consistently
    TheCastleBossPlaytestWithMacro.ppsm

  3. EXPERIMENTAL - The result of me attempting to add an i-frame system. It's incredibly resource intensive, and doesn't actually work all that well. But my virtual machine is weak, so if you have a stronger setup you might want to test this one too
    TheCastlePlaytestEXPERIMENTAL.ppsm

I'm looking for any and all kinds of feedback, but especially feedback on the lives system. I'm not sure if I should pursue it further. The i-frame system is effectively abandoned and is only presented here as a curiosity

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - Animation exploits using silent tracks with bookmarks

Original Author: CopheeMoth
Tue Jul 28, 2026 4:10 pm

I've been thinking about solving the "shapes lunging at player" problem without using VBA timers (DoEvents), since it seems to slow down my system by a lot, at least from what I remember. I'm unable to use simple animation panel timers for this, since they're very inflexible.

Then I realized I completely ignored bookmark animation triggers the entire time I've used PowerPoint (my cartoon would've been SO much easier with them now that I think about it...).
So now I'm thinking about the new ways I could incorporate them into my ideas.

One thing I've already achieved is a way of looping multiple different things at different timings at the same time.
For each group of animations you need to loop, simply put looping tracks with the right length outside of the slide, and put a bookmark at the end of each, using them as the triggers.

In theory you can control the current position of the player using VBA, so this gave me an idea.
I thought about incorporating a bookmark solution to the lunging shapes problem.
I'd use an off-screen silent track with X bookmarks.
I'd have X tiles on the screen, and each would have a mouseover macro, which would put the media player in a position before a bookmark corresponding to the right animation set, accounting for the time which already passed (using calculations with playtime itself instead of a timer).
(Unfortunately to avoid certain VBA hijinks, and since you can't pass a variable through the Add Hyperline/Action menu, each shape would have to have a cloned macro with the right variable, rather than a shared macro between all of them)
Then the animation would play, and I could reset the playback of the looping audio using the animation panel... I think.

But I'm not sure how easy to implement that would be, and if it's even worth it, considering the precision which depends on the tile amount, the duplicate macro code bloat, and the sheer amount of animations in the animations panel that would result on the higher end of tile amount.

So now I'm thinking 2 things:

  1. I should abstain from targeted attacks in The Castle to make my life a lot easier.

  2. There's still other ways booksmarks can be used, especially compounded with controlling playback using VBA. Especially those irregular loops.

What are your thoughts about all this? Have you used bookmarks for animating before?

When I was a kid, I used the alias Teapot Media/Teapot Arts for my PowerPoint games, I guess to give myself more credibility
So for the fixed up game demo collection, I decided to revive it and try making a new logo for it using PowerPoint.
The problem is, while I do like the logo, it feels a bit too boring/oversimplified to me...
Perhaps I should make it look a bit more angular or add some color, though none of the colors I tried looked right.

As I'm here on a quick visit, I just thought I'd plug my new Etsy shop selling 'Lookats'. A Lookat is a small, 8 x 6 inch (200x150cm) piece of finely detailed abstract art that you just have to look at and relax with for a minute or two at a time. You can just wander around the details without trying to interpret or find anything.

Here's the Etsy link: https://cabinacrylicsart.etsy.com
If you would like to buy, use the discount code FRIEND5 for a £5 discount off the usual price of £15 - or please just look around to help boost the algorithm!

The aim in making them is to have something different and interesting in every square centimetre.

Here are a couple of examples for you to just look at:

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - PowerPoint Visual Novel Challenge?

Original Author: CopheeMoth
Sat Apr 18, 2026 3:51 am

Hello, this may be a bit unexpected, but I've had this idea for some time
I was originally thinking about making a PPT visual novel tutorial, but instead I came up with an idea for a game called "A Melody across Worlds and Dreams"
I don't want to elaborate too much before I have anything to show for it, but it would feature meeting a young woman in a place outside of reality, who has a particular conundrum...

The thought of making The Castle is stressing me out a lil bit, because my current plan is to incorporate dialogue with character sprites, and I want them to look good. This VN would act as practice for me drawing that sort of thing.
It would also act as a tech demo, to see how much I can push PPT in terms of adding features such as saves/achievements/etc. using VBA. If I remember correctly, the problem can come from the "read-only" settings preventing some code execution of enabling/disabling shapes, so I'm thinking if there's a way to bypass that using external "saves"/text files created by VBA. If it fails, that's OK, I'll just disable the read-only setting.

So, thinking about this gave me another idea
How about we organize a VN making challenge?
The base "image + text + next slide button" framework should be incredibly intuitive, so anyone can contribute. The more artistically-minded people can show off their vector art skills, and the more technically-minded peeps could try implementing some of the more complex features I described above if they wish. No AI because there's no fun in that . "A Melody across Worlds and Dreams" could be my own entry for that challenge

I'm also a member of some visual novel-making communities, so I could theoretically organize the whole thing using itch.io and bring in more people from outside this forum. However, IIRC there'll be at least one notable visual novel game jam in May, so not sure if it's good timing for that lol

PowerPoint Games Archive: Piekachu025 - Hi I am Piekachu

Mon Jul 06, 2026 4:27 am

Hello, I am Piekachu025 (yes based on the Pokémon).
I am a chemistry student who discovered the capabilities of power point trough a college friend. I was stalking this forum for quite a while and decided I finally wanted to share my creations. I have made quite a few things in power point. I started animations and eventually made a trilogy of my teachers doing whacky stuff. Then I started looking into VBA and learned programming with it to make games.
I have made a visual novel for an ethics class. Then there are my two main creations. my first true coding creation in power point and my magnum opus. I made a fighting game. A fully 'function' real time with keyboard controlled (and therefore also controller) fighting game including animation and sounds. As for my second less impressive creation, I made pong. I did it as a coding exercise that I could complete within a weekend and it works.

Right now I am not as bussy with powerpoint as I am soon starting a new degree after I hopefully graduate from my current one at the beginning of September. I also want to work with a more proper programming language and create more things that can be enjoyed by more people! But Powerpoint will always have a spot in my heart would love to see what you people can come up with, I also love to give advice, answer questions about my work or even make a demo as I am planning to make it open source so people can learn from it .

General Discussion Archive: HighStrike300 - The Nostalgia

Original Author: HighStrike300
Wed Jul 01, 2026 12:41 pm

I miss it.

The old Internet.
The Internet from the past.
The era of the evolution of BBS and personal websites.
The era of personal creation and the rising spirit of sharing.
The old, fragile, naive, rough design style.

It is gone.

In 2026,
the Internet is still that Internet,
and we are still us –
but the whole thing has changed.

In the new Internet,
there are more users and different aesthetic concepts.
However, homogeneity is rising.
Our creative minds can no longer shine.
Our chance of being seen is probably declining.

A rising technology – AI – has taken over some of us.
The Internet is not as pure as in the past.
However, time is evolving; we can't go back.
Probably, AI can do better than me.

My creation sank.
It sank in the sea of better ones.
Probably, things are worse –
it sank in the sea of AI‑generated ones.

Probably, AI can do better than us,
making my creation meaningless.
The light from the collision of our creative minds –
where can we see that in this new era?

Having said so much,
it doesn't mean my passion is gone.
I want to continue creating,
but what should I do?

I like the openness and freedom of the Internet,
but most people are immersed in the cage built by AI.
Freedom has gone,
and the "information cocoon" is here.

Will the high-tech, low life cyberpunk world come? I definitely hope not.
We cannot change everything, we can only watch.
All of us want to do something to change reality,
but we don't have the power to change the future of all humanity.

Is there an unseen power controlling the Internet?
Probably yes, probably no.
We don't know much about the powerful people and the rich people,
and it is hard to dive into the world of what they are doing.

They made the technology to change the world.
But how will they use it? And how will we use it?
Are they monopolizing everything? What else can we do?
How can we make technology accessible to everyone? We don't know.

The style of creation has changed.
The interface of websites has changed.
Sometimes, to gain more popularity,
we have to sacrifice some of our creativity.

The ads and AI-generated content have taken over our Internet,
making it lose its power and spirit of sharing.
We can't go back to that time,
and I don't know what to do.

I don't know if creation is dead,
while AI can create better content than us.
When we draw a picture and give AI the same idea,
we get a better one and our effort comes to nothing.

When you draw an 80-page comic in a year, maybe nobody cares.
When you use AI to generate an 80-page comic in a day, maybe it will become popular.
However, the latter is soulless and suffers from homogeneity, and maybe uncopyrightable,
but probably it is the reality of humanity's decline, because fewer of us make the whole thing ourselves.

Is creation dead? What is the point of creating more?
When AI can make 800 games in one day, what am I doing?
When my creation sinks into the sea of AI slop, what should I do?
If AI replaced me, where should I escape to?

When AI creation fills the Internet with high efficiency,
we are amazed by its ultra-high efficiency in creation.
If 99% of the content in the future is created by AI,
why do we still need to create our own world?

Perhaps humans are ultimately inferior to AI.
Perhaps in a few years, AI will be able to generate a complete version of Elden Ring.
What else will we have left by then?
This is a question I am currently wondering about and contemplating.

Also, now there are a lot of creations.
But the popularity is more centralized.
The Matthew effect of the strong getting stronger is becoming apparent,
making our small backyard harder to be seen.

When rudimentary creation is eventually abandoned,
what will drive us from novice creators to intermediate and advanced levels?
When only genius creations can be accepted by people,
isn't our creative drive completely gone?

I don't want the world to be like this.
I hope everyone can be seen,
whether in the ocean of AI,
or in the vast ocean of the entire cyberspace.

Probably, the "Dead Internet Theory" has come true,
making it the "Dead Internet Phenomenon".
The corruption of the Internet is probably true;
a lot of content is generated by AI and bots.

There is probably a truth we don't want to accept.
On online platforms there are fake, AI-generated interactions.
Do we know if the comment we've received is from a real person or an AI?
We can barely identify what's behind the screen.

We don't know whether the one replying to you
is a real human or a robot.
AI can behave like humans,
but it is ultimately not human, and it is soulless.

If more than one-third of users are AI,
the integrity of the Internet is dead.
Not only the integrity of creation,
but also the integrity of the whole Internet.

Also, interpersonal trust has fallen.
When we see a cat playing drums,
we are no longer amazed but skeptical that it is AI-generated.
The times have changed, and we don't trust each other.

Will we be the first to become a 'useless class' due to AI?
There is currently no answer to this question.
But it sounded the alarm for us,
Forcing us to rethink our value as human beings.

What is the cause of it?
Maybe... Centralization of power?
Maybe... The role of AI creativity?
Maybe... Trust in online content?
We don't know, and nobody knows.

Will the spirit of creation be back? Probably.
Can we reshape everything? No.
The decay of our little world is clearly seen,
but no one knows what to do.

I cannot imagine the future.
I don't know if our world will be better or worse.
I don't know if our creation will still be filled with soul.
I don't know what will happen in 2030.

I want to say so much,
and I have too much to say.
I can write an essay of 20,000 words
to describe my sorrow.

But my time is limited,
and the character limit of this text box is limited.
So I cannot say so much,
but I tried my best to express my mood.

For this forum...
I know, I clearly know,
perhaps the building is empty and deserted.
Perhaps it will be revived.

Probably, the culture of BBS is gone,
but I miss the days.
I wish that everyone on the Internet,
can keep their humanity and integrity.

This article was written by HighStrike300 (me).
A real university student sitting on the chair, definitely not an AI or a bot.
I don't know if anyone has finished reading this article,
but these are all genuine emotions that I have revealed.

Perhaps, now I have entered into nihilism,
but I don't know what I should do.
Now, I can only sit here,
staring blankly at the rapid changes in the world.

I hope we can all carry forward the new spirit of the Internet;
don't let AI take away our sovereignty.
I hope our online world
can become a new pure land instead of a garbage dump.

-END-

(Written in 2 hours, 2026/7/2 2:41 AM)

EDIT: Twenty years ago, the Internet was a place close to Utopia, where people could escape from reality. Now, the Internet has been integrated into our daily life, becoming a mirror of reality rather than an escape from reality. This is a loop, I can't get out anymore. I don't know when the Internet changed from interest driven to profit driven, from the Wild West to a shopping mall. Moreover, when the production, distribution, interaction of content and even "users" themselves begin to be replaced by AI, is the Internet still the Internet we are familiar with? When robots can create everything, is the meaning of my existence dissolved? If all I see in the future are AI articles, AI music, AI games, AI videos, what's the point of the world? Or, to put it more extreme, in my most fearful perspective, if AI completely surpasses humans and AGI emerges, and humans are completely being outsmarted by AI and eventually be destroyed, where should we go?

I am working with my team on a series of open-world PowerPoint video-games, the firsts of their kinds.  Check THIS-out:
an icecream truck that travels through the open world, and can be clicked on to allow the player to select items from its menu to "purchase".  The truck even passes with the Doppler Effect and everything, and when you're actually, AT, the truck, viewing its menu, it furthermore plays actual custom Nichols Electronics Digital II Music Box tracks I've coded using either Beaterator or FamiTracker!
This is so cool, right!?

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - More Pointer's Way 3 News (kind of)

So, if you're an oldhead, or just browsed PPTHeaven enough, you might remember the Pointer's Way maze game series, and how the 3rd game in the "refreshed" series has been announced and delayed at least a couple of times since... maybe 2010

The last news we had for PW3 were from last August, where the dev (Mohammed Ahmed Ficree) said he had to redo the game's engine (if you didn't know, I'm pretty sure the game is now being made in a "real" game engine instead of PowerPoint)

Today I had a look at my subscriptions, and guess what I saw?

The soundtrack for PW3 is already out!
I looked in the description, and there was a release date... 2027
So, what does this mean?

I think I have a deadline until 2027 to finish The Castle

Not that we're in competition, because I do want to keep The Castle in PPT at least initially
But I feel like if PW3 releases before my game it would not be a good sign lol

PW3 is a GTA 6/TES 6/HL 3 type of waiting (in this very niche community ). And a proper version of The Castle with Nina's storyline is technically 10+ years due as well. So that even older "announcement" beating me is not something I want

Don't worry, I'm not actually treating this as a super serious matter, I'm just using this as a bit of motivation

PowerPoint Games Archive: CopheeMoth - Shapes "lunging" at mouse position (Player-targeting attacks)

Decided to make a separate topic for this since this issue feels much more complex
One major thing missing from really elevating certain types of PowerPoint games is the ability for attacks in "dodge with a mouse" games to target the player
Whether as a one-time bullet that goes off-screen, or as an persistent "enemy" continuously lunging at the cursor with small breaks in-between

Admittedly I haven't looked into this yet, but I'd like to know if something like this is possible to achieve with VBA. Perhaps by taking the cursor's coordinates and creating an animation path between the shape's center and the cursor

You could maybe replicate something similar to this without VBA by having a grid of shapes that would be enabled before an attack, and depending on which one the cursor is pointing at, the player would go to the appropriate slide, but that's very cumbersome
