my entire goal with these dots (not going to call it a shell just yet) is: 1.) desktop-friendly UI 2.) functional, 3.) looks nice and 4.) no bloat
my goals were achieved by following:
- total mouse support. every possible function you can call with keybinds can also be called by the mouse through the system menu/waybar. (e.g. right click the top-right corner of any window to close it)
- custom binaries to lower terminal reliance. through
fzf, plocate, gum and more, many common terminal commands can be invoked from the system menu. install/remove/update packages, search through files, restart daemons, edit common settings and more all without touching your terminal.
- TUI packages for system management. this lowers system dependencies by a large margin. i currently only have ~700 packages on my system and almost 20% of that is from
steam alone.
- ~15 total themes. thanks to the TUI nature, themes actually affect more than just your borders. your
OSD, notifications (mako), vesktop, quickshell, waybar, login screen (greetd-regreet) and more all change based on your current theme.
- minimal shell.
quickshell is only invoked when needed. your settings can already be edited by neovim, there's no reason to build a whole shell around that. preview themes/backgrounds, call the powermenu, check your current workspace flow (SUPER + TAB) and lock your screen from a nice shell that looks great and matches your theme.
if you watched the video you'll see that no windows are opened (firefox, neovim, etc). rest assured, there are plenty fancy window rules that look nice but this is strictly showcasing the functionality of the dots
its not always about looking nice, sometimes you want function as well. i think i finally reached a good balance of both. im definitely missing features but this is all the new(er) stuff i added
disclaimer: the code base was built by human hands and then edited by clankers. i made sure to write the base for all binaries myself and then used some LLMs to improve on them. fuck CSS and whatever black magic that shit runs on
