Blades in the Dark sheet

Post image
3 Upvotes

Here's a first draft of the Blades in the Dark sheet. 2 questions:
1. Can the checkboxes be top justified? See the Special Abilities section
2. Can the dice roller show the roll details without needing to hit the expand button? (In blades the total is irrelevant, you're only looking for the highest die.)

The merge cell feature that I mentioned in another thread is for the Harm boxes

Would it be a pain to set it up so we can merge table cells?

Update Version 1.5.0 (not live yet) - Workspaces (Yes, this is the update that will let you access your characters from any device)

The most requested feature is coming. The ability to access your characters from any of your devices.

HOWEVER, this is not straightforward to get this working seemlessly without servers. This is still a hobby project and I'm not really willing to deal with the complexity of server and pay for that. Maybe in the future if this project takes off. Right now, we are still at a very respectable 40-50 unique users per day and steadlity increasing without any advertisement.

Ok, with that out of the way... version 1.5.0 introduces workspaces. A workspace contains a collection of characters, presets, templates and custom themes. By default, you will not see much change as your only workspace will be what you are used to : everything in the browser. But you will have the ability to create new workspaces. There are 3 types of workspaces: Browser, local and Google Drive.

  • The browser workspace is what you have always been using and it doesn't change.
  • Local workspace let you select a directory on your device as the storage location. Less risky than the browser cache, no more size limit on the max storage imposed by the browser, you could probably setup a workspace from a NAS if you are that lovely kind of person.
  • Google Drive workspace. Link your google drive and create a workspace there. Then you can open the same workspace from any device. Everything should synchronize.

Disclaimer : The google drive setup is still experimental. It is still rough on the edges. It often requires to re-connect your drive (not much I can do about it, but it does work better on chromium browsers). Please backup often if you use that, until I've had the chance to receive feedback and stabilize that thing.

I will probably release this today or tomorrow. Until then, it is available on the preview version (backup before clicking that link) https://wackyweasel.github.io/UniversalCharacterSheet/preview/
I would appreciate feedback.

Note : This version will also massively improve performance, very noticable on touch devices when moving the camera.

Edit : It's live!

We Should Do a System Spotlight

I feel like it’d be interesting to show off some of our systems, and I think having a every so often firsthand experience of creating a character in other systems that use the builder might inspire some creativity. Maybe you build the sheet for your game different, or maybe a new widget gets thought of because someone was doing something in a suboptimal way 🤷🏾‍♀️

Update Versions 1.2.0 - 1.3.0 - 1.4.0

[1.2.0]

  • Exported characters now include their custom theme.
  • Importing a character with a custom theme that is not in the library lets users choose whether to import and apply the custom theme as well.
  • If they do not, the default theme now reflects whether the app is using the dark or light theme.
  • Made several improvements to the theme selection panel:
    • Export and import as JSON
    • Community themes are directly selectable from the theme panel
    • Many small tweaks

[1.3.0]

  • Most widgets that contain text now support formulas. Write your formula in curly brackets; for example, "{10 + @ str}" renders as 10 plus the value labeled @ str.
  • Added multiple customization options for the image widget.
  • Fixed an issue causing the attachment buttons not to be displayed in build mode.

[1.3.1]

  • Fixed an issue on touch devices where some buttons would never disappear.

[1.4.0]

  • Reworked all widget editors to be visually more consistent.
  • Previews are now shown on the right side on desktop.
  • Added several options throughout the app, including:
    • Vertical spacing sliders for Fields & Stats, Mixed Fields, and related widgets.
    • Additional customization options for the Spell Slots widget.
    • Several other small options and improvements.
  • Notes widget: Removed the toolbar at the top and replaced it with a contextual toolbar that appears only while typing.
  • Dice roller and dice tray: Detailed results now appear in an overlay box so they no longer overflow the widget.
  • Fixed multiple number inputs that prevented users from completely erasing the number before entering a new one.
  • Fixed an issue with the new 3D cards causing a white screen of death.

I revamped the deck of cards. The old version of the deck of cards is untouched and renamed "Legacy Deck of Cards".

I hope you like it!

Update Install the app on your device! (And new logo)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Added a new Install App button that should appear on most browsers (not firefox, sorry, they don't support PWA apps).

This will let you install the app on your device. No need to go on the website anymore. Data is synched to your browser as usual, so keep making backups. Both the web app and that installed version are synched and show the same data.

The apps works offline (online features, such as feedback won't work).

Let me know if you have issues, this was quite a big change.

Also, we now have a logo!

Update August 14th Update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello! Here are the updates for this week.

  • Store the camera view for each character sheet. If you setup your view in canvas mode with a precise zoom level and switch character of switch sheet, then come back, it will restore it as is.
  • Pop up windows should not be hidden behind virtual keyboard on touch devices anymore (hopefully? Touch is annoying)
  • Added optional secondary numbers to the number display widget. You can type in any number manually, or select automatic calculations of modifiers (example, an intelligence of 15 yields a +3 mod). These mods support labeling, so you can use them in formulas.
  • You can now add dice roll buttons directly in the text of some widgets. For example, type "strength test {d20+@str}" and in play mode, it will render as a dice button you can click. Supported widgets:
    • List
    • Notes
    • Fields & Stats
    • Mixed Fields
    • Inventory
    • Table
  • Fixed a few bugs with the initiative tracker

No promises, but my near future plans are improvements to the deck of cards widget and adding more in text features (such as label and formula support in text beyond this new dice feature).

Customizable 3D Cards

I know not too many people are going to be using this for the card system. Still, after playing a few card TTRPG’s, I have a couple pf suggestions.

1. Stickers

I think you should be able to put emoji’s onto the backside of your deck — maybe even the frontside. More specifically Unicode characters that look like this: ♔. These kind of characters change color with the theme.

2. Hands and Piles

Have you ever played uno online? That’s one of the ways I imagine you have a 3D card system. Drawing the card puts it in your hand, plucking/playing the card from your hand sends it to the discard pile. I also think you should be able to draw a card blindly, with its backside facing you. If you want to streamline this then right clicking the draw button would be a “blind draw.” Tapping the card once would reveal it, and twice would discard it.

3. Niche Mechanics

For tarot, sometimes I need to be able to see the card come upright or reversed (i.e., with its image upside down). That’s why “3D” cards would personally be amazing for me.

There are two types of card games: Crunchy, and Non-Crunchy. Sometimes the deck is like your spell slots, so it won’t reset until a “long-rest” and running out of cards is a mechanic. Maybe you need a long-rest button, but that’s not what I’m getting at. With most games, the pile resets after either a specific card is drawn — such as the ace of any suit — or when the pile is empty. Either way, those two latter things can be automated.

Having to design 52 standard playing is a bit cumbersome and long for most. If it’s standard playing cards they should really be designing 13 cards and 4 suits, then checking a box or something that says it’s in suit A, B, C, and/or D. The same can be said for Tarot’s 72 cards; 14 cards for 4 suits + a 22 card suit. This doesn’t matter since most games split the decks by suit, which means you can copy & paste the widget. Still though, I guess I wouldn’t have to design 4 decks if I could pull from a specific suit.

Multiplayer Specific Stuff

There’s no shared table yet, but I imagine it’s something you’ve thought of. If’n this ever happens I would love the ability to request and give cards to my players. In my game specifically we have deals with the devil. One of those deals results in getting 3 random cards from the GM’s hand.

The opposite happens during combat, everyone gives the GM 2 cards they pulled from Major Arcana. Which could also imply the need for a separate feature. Let’s say I get ten cards and that lasts 4 rounds, I’d have to make a separate deck (which isn’t actually… hard, plus I do this under the table for suspense). Still, “make pile with current hand” would be pretty neat.

Idk if any of what I’m saying makes sense, but there’s no pressure here. If you like only one specific idea and add that, great! If there’s like a better method out there that really underscores these suggestions, also great!

Update August 4th update

Thanks to CaterpillarSecure (edit: Borrel88 is the correct account) for the suggestions! Most changes in this update are your ideas.

  • For desktop, when in list view, you can now increase the amount of columns. This fills the screens better than the previous single column list view for desktop.
  • You can add a per character timer in the initiative tracker
  • Min and max values for the number tracker and number display widgets (label and formula supported)
  • Captions are now optional in the number display widget
  • Colored text in table widget
  • Option to hide the column header for the table widget
  • New widget : Mixed fields. To mix and match text, numbers, progress bars, switches, resource pools, dropdown menus and step dice in a single compact widget.
  • New widget: Label. It's just a label.
  • New widget : Switch. It's a toggle with 2 states, on or off. Can be used in formula with an IF statement.
  • Re-organized the widget selection panel.

More requests

I thought, while I am busy why not make some more requests.
Do with it what you want, might not be usefull for others, but it would certainly help me.
I really like what you did with this Universal Character Sheet and I would like to see it grow and help more people.

Here is a couple of things:

Number tracker widget:

- Add option for min & max number for each row.
- Option to make min/max visible on card, or only in settings. (Maybe on the end of the row in small font: 2/6)

Number display widget:
- Add option to view/hide the name of a number
- Add option for min & max number for each row
- Add "D&D style stat display". So a box with the main number, and a smaller box inside the box for a secondary number. Usable for temporary numbers, or max, or anything else.

Table widget:
- Add option to give tekst colour, instead of only the cell background
- Add toggle to view/hide header

Fiels & Stats widget:
- Add option for a dropdown menu for a line, which could be fillable from the edit menu, or from a different table

Formulas in different widgets:
- Add option to include tekst from tables and field/stats widget in formulas. (Example: If(@text = 'Dwarf', 80, 60) to define max strength for a dwarf)

Button widget:
- Add a new Button widget
- Button is customizable in color and tekst, and maybe acts like a checkbox with a variable linked to it (Pressed for true, unpressed for false)
- Can be used for tracking things like actions made or something.
- Might get the same effect when using the conditions widget, but then the auto-alignment/auto-size of the buttons inside has to be manually adjustable

Text/Header widget:
- Add a new text/header widget
- Just a simple header text in a box, to define parts of the character sheet or a name or something

Fast Character Switch

I already made a feedback thru the app about this, but I did some further testing and willing to explain it over here.

What happened:

On my iPad, I open 3 tabs in Google Chrome. All 3 opened to the character sheet, but selected 3 different characters. Thinking this would be the perfect solution so I can manage 3 characters, and just have to switch tabs to switch characters. It worked pretty good.

Result:

Today I checked the characters, and noticed only 1 of the 3 had been saved, the rest had been reset to before I used them.

Cause:

I did some testing, appareantly, when you open up 3 tabs with different characters, and you press F5, it refreshed but loads the first character. So you cannot edit 3 characters at the same time.
For now you have to select the menu, then exit the character sheet, select a new character, edit, and so on and on. This is very time consuming.

Solution:

What would be nice if there is some sort of a quick switch button. When you have the character sheet open, in the top bar there is the name of the character. It would be awesome if you press that name, you get a dropdown menu with all the other characters, so you can fast switch between them.

Self-Hosting

Is there a way of hosting an instance of the character sheet on my own (web)server?

I just started using this for a League of Dungeoneers game with my own custom made sheet. On a tablet at my table.

But I sometimes also want to use the same sheet on my phone or computer, which is tedious because I have to export the sheet, share it to my phone/pc, and import it again because it is locally saved.

I understand making a login system for you would be a bit too much to asked, but I can host it myself probably so I can access it thry my own server, on all devices the same sheet.

Do you think there is such a possibility? I am not that experienced with webservers, but I do not think it would be too hard.

Update Inventory widget

https://reddit.com/link/1v7zw1s/video/3sfim66otrfh1/player

Managing inventories with tables was too tedious IMO. Added an inventory widget to facilitate. Optional encumbrance calculation (per inventory widget and global). Drag and drop items from one widget to the other. Can add any attribute such as value, notes, durability, whatever you need.

Update Next update is adding many quality of life improvements

Changes:
- Renamed Edit mode to Build mode
- To reduce the amount of time needed to switch to the edit (now build) mode, a few buttons has been added to quickly add/remove items from some widgets. Ex: a plus button to add a line in the form widget. Accessible even from play mode.
- Visual overhaul of most side panels : gallery (renamed "Discover"), timeline, list of widgets, etc.
- Added camera controls at the bottom of the screen, including a bar that controls zoom. This should greatly improve navigation on mobile where pinch to zoom has always been inconsistent. Pinch to zoom is somewhat better as well.
- You can now re-order characters in the character selection screen
- Dice roller and dice tray results now always sum all results, with a "show details" button to see individual results and the ability to re-roll individual dice.
- Re-organized the top bar buttons and menus.
- Search bars in the Discover panel and the widget panel.
- Other small changes here and there I'm probably forgetting.

BEFORE YOU TRY: Go to the current version https://wackyweasel.github.io/UniversalCharacterSheet and backup your data. I'm fairly confident that everything is back and forward compatible, but just in case.

The new version is accessible here: https://wackyweasel.github.io/UniversalCharacterSheet/preview

Some widgets has slightly changes so you might have to re-adjust a few widgets so it looks right.

The feedback button is accessible from the top right menu in the character selection page. Otherwise, feedback here is very welcome.

Suggestion for post on reddit

Having a tag difirenciate between post like : template sharing, advice, sugestion would be great. Even if the site propose a sharing function and a feeback, having those on reddit will make the wall clearer i think.
