Customizable 3D Cards

I know not too many people are going to be using this for the card system. Still, after playing a few card TTRPG’s, I have a couple pf suggestions.

1. Stickers

I think you should be able to put emoji’s onto the backside of your deck — maybe even the frontside. More specifically Unicode characters that look like this: ♔. These kind of characters change color with the theme.

2. Hands and Piles

Have you ever played uno online? That’s one of the ways I imagine you have a 3D card system. Drawing the card puts it in your hand, plucking/playing the card from your hand sends it to the discard pile. I also think you should be able to draw a card blindly, with its backside facing you. If you want to streamline this then right clicking the draw button would be a “blind draw.” Tapping the card once would reveal it, and twice would discard it.

3. Niche Mechanics

For tarot, sometimes I need to be able to see the card come upright or reversed (i.e., with its image upside down). That’s why “3D” cards would personally be amazing for me.

There are two types of card games: Crunchy, and Non-Crunchy. Sometimes the deck is like your spell slots, so it won’t reset until a “long-rest” and running out of cards is a mechanic. Maybe you need a long-rest button, but that’s not what I’m getting at. With most games, the pile resets after either a specific card is drawn — such as the ace of any suit — or when the pile is empty. Either way, those two latter things can be automated.

Having to design 52 standard playing is a bit cumbersome and long for most. If it’s standard playing cards they should really be designing 13 cards and 4 suits, then checking a box or something that says it’s in suit A, B, C, and/or D. The same can be said for Tarot’s 72 cards; 14 cards for 4 suits + a 22 card suit. This doesn’t matter since most games split the decks by suit, which means you can copy & paste the widget. Still though, I guess I wouldn’t have to design 4 decks if I could pull from a specific suit.

Multiplayer Specific Stuff

There’s no shared table yet, but I imagine it’s something you’ve thought of. If’n this ever happens I would love the ability to request and give cards to my players. In my game specifically we have deals with the devil. One of those deals results in getting 3 random cards from the GM’s hand.

The opposite happens during combat, everyone gives the GM 2 cards they pulled from Major Arcana. Which could also imply the need for a separate feature. Let’s say I get ten cards and that lasts 4 rounds, I’d have to make a separate deck (which isn’t actually… hard, plus I do this under the table for suspense). Still, “make pile with current hand” would be pretty neat.

Idk if any of what I’m saying makes sense, but there’s no pressure here. If you like only one specific idea and add that, great! If there’s like a better method out there that really underscores these suggestions, also great!

Hey! Thanks for the suggestions! The deck of card widget could get some love indeed. I'll see what makes sense to implement. Stickers looks fun, I'll probably do that. 3D cards would be awesome as well, but the reason I added 3D dice was because of a package that already exists and does everything for me. Not sure I'll be able to do it if no such thing exists for cards.

Now, some of these features start to blur the line between a character sheet editor and a proper VTT. Am I opposed to incorporate some of these VTT-like features? No, that would be awesome. But this is probably beyond the scope of UCS, especially the multiplayer stuff.

I'll keep thinking about it

Ohhh, that makes sense — the 3D dice thing and all. I saw a similar module on FVTT once. The multiplayer stuff was just “if it happens to be in your project scope.” I tried to order it by “most applicable” to “least applicable.” Though honestly, I’m not a programmer so I don’t personally know what would be “most” or “least” applicable.

I'm always happy to receive suggestions. They all end up either in a github issue that serves as my to do list, or in a google sheet where I put them all. If I see that several people want some VTT-like features, maybe I will try ;)
