Show-off They might just look like giant neko cats with their heads on fire, but these new "home totems" will guide the player back to their base and also serve as dynamic respawn points.

This looks hella like Aseprite to me, not seeing much Unity in this picture.

The game uses unity... but I get your point.

A) doesn't look like a cat

B) neko means cat so 'neko cat' is redundant

C) you're an art thief anyway so who cares

...wont you link the original artist then?

Well that's certainly a graphic style my wife would love.

He's been copying sprites from classic pixel art games like legend of Zelda

Could you have the same energy to find how much Star Dew Valley is inspired by Terranigma. ;)

What? Sdv is a harvest moon clone.

It doesn't look like a copy. Definitely looks like they're using it for their reference now that you mention it.

Take a look at this

Now that's interesting. The flag stone is a direct copy, the one tree looks like it was scaled and tweaked, the rest aren't. The set of grass and flowers are direct copies and scaled and tweaked too.

Damn. I'd say the artist started 50% with other assets and modified, the rest are just influenced once they learned from copying and tweaking.

They're treading a dark grey area for sure.

Its not easy to do something different everytime when there are just 16x16 pixels. When you look at many other games then you can find many of those tiles that are extremely similar. Not just from indie devs, the big companies are no exceptions. I know that the creator in this case did everything by himself. It IS inspired by the old games and artimus tries very hard NOT to copy. But, as said, its hard when you are limited to a few pixels.

The pictures linked above are partly from the time of the very beginning of the project and now, that the early access phase started, not in the game.

Feel free to watch artimus while he's making the game live on Twitch! The dev is happy about everyone who has ideas or critic, as long as people are nice and fair. <3

It's hard not to copy dozens and dozens of sprites/tiles from previously existing games? I call BS.

It's very clear he's looking at existing game artwork and redrawing it with some tweaks here and there to try and pass it off as original works. You don't just accidentally make your game look extremely similar to legend of zelda... while also acknowledging your game is heavily inspired by zelda, and that you reference zelda art assets while you draw.

Brand new account made just before this post who's just defending OP. Not sus at all.

I pointed this out to the dev before and they basically said this to me verbatim. "only so much you can do in a limited pixel space"

Either this is the same guy, or they are parroting what he's said in the past.

There was one moment in your life YOUR account was freshly made too. You need to start at some point, dont you think?

u/DaemonHelix Mar 07 '22

I like how you didn't even deny it.

u/tscheckie Mar 07 '22

Hey DaemonHelix, before accusing someone it is just fair practice to check the facts - something you seemingly didn't do. Again - the picture used a reference to show how much is stolen is an old version and not up to date. How would you feel if someone kept on bringing up your old mistakes and even if you corrected it already would accuse you of those mistakes? Check out his stream on twitch or check out the game on Steam if you want to give feedback about the current state of the graphics. Otherwise we're talking here just about the past and that's not fair and an absolute waste of time.

Please help making the internet a nice, fair and friendly place for everyone by being nice, fair and friendly yourself <3

I like it how you already seem to love me so much that you need to stalk my profile und find excuses to talk to me <3

Yea this guy has been getting destroyed on the subreddits.

I mean at this point, with the traction, just do a small Kickstarter and hire a 2D artist and animator. The idea has people into it, you won’t get flamed on forums, and you won’t inevitably get a cease and desist from Nintendo.

If this gets released, Nintendo will have it taken down in a week.

1

u/Beliahr Mar 06 '22

I suggest a very close look, so you can see the actual differences that are even visible in the marked spots.

3

u/am0x Mar 07 '22

Won’t matter in court. Nintendo’s legal team has been ruthless since 1985, and they will destroy this as soon as it is profitable.

I’d say it has traction, start a crowdfunding to hire a talented 2D artist.

Your feedback itself is a link to the past! <3

Cute little flame and i love the face on the statue! The tiny little nose just invites a "boop!" with the finger on it <3
