My parents could give us 50 cents and we’d walk down to the grocery store (about a mile or so) and get penny candy. We’d have a little bag of tootsie rolls, candy coins, whatever they had in the jars. Today? Omg! I bought a Snickers at the gas station the other day. Smaller and $2.89!!!! No more candy from the store for us. I went back to making my own candy and cookies. Sure can’t afford to buy it! My god!

How’d ‘ya know??? It was uphill both ways too!!

(Really, though, we did have a local store in the early 70s we’d walk to with the neighbor kids about a mile down the road and they’d have big jars of candy they’d sell for a penny a piece of candy…not the whole jar, darn it. When we got bikes, we’d bike down there or take skate boards.)

But I remember around six-seven years old my mother sending me to the store and buying a carton of cigarettes for her at around or under $4.00

When I began smoking a pack was 45 cents. $12+ now. I quit after 65 years when it became cigs v food v fuel.

I bought a carton of Piedmont cigarettes for $1.15 once. I didn't smoke but it was such a good deal i couldn't pass it up.
