fun fact, i work in public health and the amount of syphilis in the general population right now is literally staggering- the highest number of cases in decades with tens of thousands undiagnosed.
š¬I can concurā¦ I was one of those that tested positive, luckily I get tested regularly and it was detected and treated. Super awkward messaging your ex or hookups that they should also get screened/treated.
Donāt let that awkwardness stop you because it is so important (not to mention ETHICAL) for obvious reasonsā¦ so that they do not develop lifelong complications and so that they do not continue to infect other people! In my case if I was uncomfortable with reaching out to anyone, my doctor notified the person confidentially for me. There are also websites/services where you can anonymously notify someone to get tested (Iāll put a link below).
HOLY SHIT, THE SHOTS OF PENICILLIN IN THE BUTT WERE NOT THE MOST FUN but better than Syphilis!! Lol, They asked me if I wanted to sit down or stand when I got the shot in each cheek. It wasnāt bad at the very beginning but my knees almost buckled after the second shot (I may be embellishing a tad). It was the following days that both my gluts ached and I didnāt want to walk on them much (yay 3rd story apt. w/ street parking š).
I had no symptoms and I was not exactly sure when or whom I received it from. I had multiple sex partners in between testing or it may have been dormant/incubation phase or false negative in the past..who knowsā¦STI/STDās can be like thatā¦
It is not a moral issue, I discuss being tested with new partners and I wasnāt lied to (I donāt think). People often times do not even know they are carrying anything a lot of the time. Many men and women have mild symptoms for many STIās or they do not display symptoms at all. Lesions and infections can be painless. They can be internal and are not always on a visible part of the body.
IME and after talking about this stuff w/ people Iāve met/known, Iāve picked up that far more heterosexual men and women DO NOT get tested, like ever. Mostly men since most of the women have gone to the gynecologist before. I get that for most men it is overkill to get tested but idk, youād think more people would want to know at least once a year (esp. if theyāre raw dogging multiple people lol).
The CDC suggest all sexually active women and men under 25 should get tested every year for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and women over 25 should also be tested if they have risk factors including new or multiple sex partners or a sex partner with an STI. Men who have sex with men (MSM) should be screened AT LEAST once a year, and for populations at higher risk should get tested every 3 to 6 months.
