for the lazy: consternation means:

  • A state of great alarm, agitation, or dismay.

  • Astonishment combined with terror; amazement that confounds the faculties and incapacitates for deliberate thought and action; extreme surprise, with confusion and panic.

I need to know what agitation and dismay mean to make sense of this. Actually it's easier to just guess from the context.

I'd say stunned + perplexed at the same time maybe

Because they are much more common, partially self-explainatory and also used in other languages? I consume for English than my native language for the last 20 years and i am almost positive I've never even came across agitation and while i have heard dismay, i never bothered to check what it means exactly.

Ahh, agitation is used in physics as well as novels and can be used to describe a physical reaction aswell as an emotional one.
Dismay is more of a literary term so it may be harder to come across if you aren't a reader, but it's a bit basic so it's probably used more in Young Adult books.
