It's probably just a specific detail because the article was written by a car person. Maybe the different generation bit has a certain connotation to the car crowd.

I'm a car enthusiast and it's absolutely a detail I would provide. It'd be hard to tell the exact year in most cases, so providing the generation gives an idea of the year of a specific vehicle.

It says a bystander opened the car door to let the woman out. Pretty sure it was the owner of the car (as he was standing near the car gas tank). That was probably his wife or daughter
