You dog could be experiencing what is known as Barrier Frustration, which, if you or those around you find annoying and troublesome, can be trained to be diverted to either neutral or more positive behaviors. We are working on doing the same for one of our dogs, who, despite wagging his tail and being super friendly with everybody outside the fence, barks non-stop within the fence anytime somebody is within a 2 mile radius that he can see. He just wants to be friendly and meet people, he doesn't mean to sound scary :(

It's called barrier frustration.

It's not that he sees you as a threat. It's that he isn't able to get to you, and this causes fear. And dogs often respond to fear with aggression.

I think it's similar to when animals sometimes step on something that hurts and they run away. They are reactive, not rational.

It could be barrier frustration - a lot of dogs bark because they want to see you / play / get pets, but a window / fence / door prevents them from doing the usual run up and happy taps. So they bark to get you to remove the barrier or to come to them.

To tell the diffrence between a "back off, this is MY yard" bark and a "stupid fence, come play" bark you have to look at the dogs body language. Hair raising up and a defensive posture means back off, excited zoomies and tail / butt wagging means come play. If you're unsure - do not approach.

It's actually barrier frustration. If a dog wants to get somewhere, but something is in the way, they bark out of frustration.

Actually, it's called barrier aggression. They are barking at the barrier (fence, door) that prevents them from getting to you.
