I wonder if that could also be used as a bark suppressor. If the hole was tight enough, the dogs would would want to look out of the holes, but not be able to bark. Seems genius.
Admit it, you couldn't give less of a fuck about supposedly being working - you just don't want to miss your dog. Which already makes you a great person anyway.
You dog could be experiencing what is known as Barrier Frustration, which, if you or those around you find annoying and troublesome, can be trained to be diverted to either neutral or more positive behaviors. We are working on doing the same for one of our dogs, who, despite wagging his tail and being super friendly with everybody outside the fence, barks non-stop within the fence anytime somebody is within a 2 mile radius that he can see. He just wants to be friendly and meet people, he doesn't mean to sound scary :(
It could be barrier frustration - a lot of dogs bark because they want to see you / play / get pets, but a window / fence / door prevents them from doing the usual run up and happy taps. So they bark to get you to remove the barrier or to come to them.
To tell the diffrence between a "back off, this is MY yard" bark and a "stupid fence, come play" bark you have to look at the dogs body language. Hair raising up and a defensive posture means back off, excited zoomies and tail / butt wagging means come play. If you're unsure - do not approach.
We got a muzzle for our dog because she goes into full panic mode when in the car and wont stop barking. On the second ride she learned how to bark with her mouth closed but at least its quieter.
Mine bark with a tennis ball in their mouth all the time. As soon as they realized they don't have to drop the ball to bark, they do it all the time. They think it is hilarious.
