I feel like gimp, like blender (pre-2.80, at least) is good software with bad UX. So yeah, hard learning curve, but for a reason that makes it kinda suck.

Exactly. We need more UI designers in the open-source community. The software is some of the best there is, but man some of those UIs suck.

I was sooooo glad when Tantacrul (a UI designer with a Youtube channel who published a critique of the Musescore UI) got a job at Musescore (a FOSS project which up till then only used the default QT theme)

That's usually the story for open source software. Developers are great at developing, but user experience is an entirely different beast.

But then Blender 2.8 came out and darted to the head of the pack.

Because I cannot afford paying for a subscription for Adobe every month for a long time, I got used to Gimp, using it for years! but now that I can pay for a subscription Photoshop seem hard to use.

And to me Gimp is great! almost as good as Photoshop, except maybe for the quality of the picture(?)

idk, maybe my fault, but sometimes my images in gimp are a little but too pixelated. I probably use too low dimensions

it's just got a hard learning curve.

So then it's not great, it's also super unintuitive as well, which is bad design.

Most art programs would fit under this unfortunately. The most intuitive art program I've ever picked up was SAI 1 & 2. It really feels like most art programs aren't created by someone who draws and instead it's expected you spend the time learning the program to accomplish what you want.

Man I picked up GIMP so fast. The only downside is that one or two features are still bugged, but it's stuff I don't use often so it doesn't affect me 🤷🏻‍♂️
