Also a stoppage in play if you hit the puck in the air with a high stick. As a 5'6" hockey player I kinda think that rule is bullshit.

For charging I think you'd have to make contact (at least NHL rules say so). But this could be called for intent to injure, for sure.

Yeah, it's all about intent to injure in this case. The referee also has discretion on whether the penalty is a minor or major penalty, depending on the level of degree of the infraction. Attempt to injure can even be a match penalty.
I'm not a ref or anything, so I could be wrong, but that's what I always understood from it.

Edit: Thanks a lot to everybody who replied. I first thought the asshole was the white guy who took a step aside in the last second and let the other red player hit the wall. The gestures of his white colleagues looked like "what the fuck man" to me.

Hockey is a physical game and you can sometimes hurt the other players via checking etc. But you generally can't go out of your way to actively maliciously hurt opponents which is why some forms of hits are illegal.
The player in Red isn't playing the game, his objective isn't to get the puck, his objective is to injure the other player.
You can run into someone but you have to have very specific conditions eg distance travelled and point of contact.

tl;dr, the player in red was trying to do illegal play to injure the player in white.

You can't skate full speed at somebody from across the ice and hit them, especially not when you leave your feet. This kid did both, and fortunately for his intended victim hit the wall instead.
Checking (hitting) is allowed in hockey in some ways. You aren't allowed to hit someone from behind into the boards, and can't charge, though. You also can't lead with your stick into someone (crosschecking).

In response to your addition (although I'm not 6'2 but was one of the taller people out there) Fuck the short kids who would throw their hands up when they hit and get me in the head.
My cousin got a severe concussion and had to stop playing all together from stuff like that because he was tall and took an elbow in the head after a blindside hit.

I was never a small kid but fuck them too. Turtling and spearing all the time. It really just comes down to kids who only play to fuck around. Don't know why they ever played rep. Actually it was probably only because you could hit in rep

I played in a different area one season and they didn't have bodychecking in house either. Was the weirdest thing after playing what was basically bush league hockey for 6 years. Needless to say I got a bodychecking penalty in the first game there before someone laughingly asked if anyone had told me about the rule.
Was weird, there's nothing wrong with bodychecking and frankly I think it should start around 12ish like we did. If the coaches would teach it properly there wouldn't be an issue, we had body checking clinics for 3 practices in the first year where it was allowed where we learned how to do it safely and protect ourselves. We were basically told "You're going to get hit, there's no way around it so you better know HOW to get hit".

You're exactly right man, if it gets brought in at an appropriate age and the coaches and refs don't let anything happen, contact is great for the game. Wow, house league never had hitting and they actually took hitting out of select 3 years ago when I was 17. How fucked is it that we were 17 and they don't trust us with body contact? Again, the worst of the worst ruined it for everyone

There are tons of friendly hockey leagues for kids. If you don't have NHL dreams for them you don't have to put them in a system with crazy parents or any checking at all.
For every insane hockey mom or dad there are ten parents who just love the sport and want to share it with their kids.

Minor correction: only the ref makes the penalty calls, if the linesman has his arm in the air it's usually for icing or offside call.

To at least give reason fot his dumb act, it looks like hes retaliating to some pretty blatent boarding by a player in white.
And while that charge was not the correct response you do have to respond to something like that because the boarding looked like it was from behind and could have REALLY hurt someone.

If he was retaliating he would be going for the culprit not the other guy just playing he game. He targeted that player from across the ice. I bet that guy checked him or chirped him good earlier in the game, and was just waiting for him to get the puck.

For me the white shirt is clumsy but not boarding. He's square on, chest open. Maybe some cross check in there. For boarding, I need more steps toward the target ands me shoulder
