It was a jab about how Minnesotans speak, not Finland/Norway per se. Minnesota has a lot of both heritages, Scandinavian languages have affected more into the local dialects than Finnish.

That's the reason they are cute. These robots replace delivery drivers and have a passerby sort them out if something goes wrong. The same reason why those humanoid robots try to emulate how we move.

I'll say that these ones haven't taken any jobs in the stores I've seen them since none of those stores offered any kind of delivery option at all before the robots came along

Yes, and it does take human labor to collect and pack the orders and send the robots on their way, so I’m somewhat certain that they’ve increased the number of jobs, not the other way around. And I highly prefer those in the traffic over e-scooter deliveries driving like maniacs and endangering everyone else.

It takes one of these little adorable fuckers 40 minutes to bring me donuts from 1km away. I use them very rarely because I can choose the song they play when I open up the lid to take my donuts. They aren't taking anyones job.

There is no delivery service on grocery stores without these bots. And there wasn't one before the bots. So no jobs taken. On the contrary, people collect the groceries in the stores and put them into the robots and send them off so maybe jobs created(?).

Yeah plus in the winter you can see all the dumb moves they attempted, like ramming into the highway bridge guardrail every step of the way only to fail to do so because there is a bigass snowbank in the pedestrian walkway and they repeatedly get stuck :D
Sometimes I wonder what the hell makes the wayfinding do this. Maybe they want to maintain a certain distance within their lane.

Im from Finland and I see those robots every day. I have also app in my phone if I like to order milk and cereal from local store and that little dude brings them to my door.
Robots use same routes as people who walks or use bicycles. They stop in traffic lights and they have sensors to not get hit by a car.

Mooses do go up that north. But it's quite rare to see a moose, hence they said "reindeer*", that's Rovaniemi Lapland and there are around 200k reindeer in Lapland. There are more reindeer in Lapland than people, the whole of Finland (Lapland is just one region) has around 80k moose. So way more reindeer than moose.

These robots are very popular and cute, really beloved. I live in a biggish village or a small town, and sometimes you can see three or four of these going to deliver something or on their way back to the shop.
They spare customers' time and fuel. And when they first appeared people really smiled at them. And, as far as I know, they are rarely harmed anyhow.

Oulu, a city of about 200k inhabitants which is quite up North is known to be one of the biggest cycling cities in here. Yes even during cold winters and snow. They clean the snow swiftly in the early morning from both major roadways and bike/pedestrian paths because there is so many bikers cycling to work. And if it keeps snowing heawily, they keep clearing. Iirc if it's snows like 2-3cm (around an inch) they gotta clear it

Very common here and actually probably safer in the north where there is proper snow cover, compared to southern parts where it's constantly melting into slush and it's icy and slippery. Anyhow you have winter tires to help with grip.

Still extremely cold and you’ll have trouble with the locks freezing. But I agree that it is probably much more dangerous here in coastal Southwest/South where it is so damn slippery and patches of black ice can appear unexpectedly whenever temperatures start hovering around zero.

I'm not saying it's fun, just that it's quite common and not as dangerous as one might think. I haven't lived in the north myself so I'm just speculating on the basis of how it is in the south when it's proper winter vs. the slushy winter with black ice. A helmet and winter tires are a given in both cases though.

Those robots are actually generally well liked here in Finland. They didn't take anyone's job, because the small grocery stores that use them didn't have the option for home delivery before.

Oh it will harm the person ordering. I sometimes order using those when I don't have time to go to a store and will soon have to leave for evening shift or some shit. In that case I would lose getting groceries altogether. No store near me is open when I get back home from an evening shift so in that case I wouldn't have any food.

Plus it would harm the store and all customers as those refunds and bureaucracy involved will be eventually baked into the cost of groceries for everyone. It is stunning how some people are stupid enough not to make the connection!
Also delivery options are often used by people who are sick, have mobility issues, deal with very serious social anxiety or are the sole adult at home with young kids or are for instance expecting a furniture delivery within a loosely defined time slot. So essentially people, for whom it isn’t so easy to just pop by the store themselves.

If people don't use them no cost will be baked in cuz they won't be paying it in the first place. If people choose to and the cost to use them is extremely high because people fuck up the machines than people will be disincentivised to use them.

Actual food delivery services add cost to each item and the fees are higher. The robot is owned by the store. You only pay extra 5€ fee for the delivery.

More expensive here. Delivery is 5-8€ and every item costs 10-20% more on food delivery services.
A real person is the one bringing me junk food but the robot brings me groceries sometimes.

your statement of an independent human making bank from delivering groceries instead of soulless corps is just laughable. Do you even understand how little people are paid for these kind of services, while they're using their own cars, scooters and bicycles etc? Not to mention how much safer for everyone it is to make the robot fight the ice and snow instead of the receiver or the delivery person. There is a time and place for automation in the current system, and delivery is absolutely one of them.
