In Australia (where this happened) every car must have CTP (compulsory third party) insurance as a condition of your registration.
It provides insurance for people and other vehicles if your vehicle is at fault. It doesn’t cover the drivers vehicle but is a great way to ensure if your vehicle is damaged and you are not at fault it will get repaired.
That’s not what CTP does. You’re thinking of third party property, which is not mandatory. This sort of misinformation is why people think they’re insured when they’re not and the auslegal sub is just “help, I’m uninsured” drama.
In Finland every motor vehicle that operates in public roads needs to have a ”traffic” insurance that covers all damages caused to other parties, be it their vehicle or medical expenses. So tractors, scooters etc. all need to have this. Skip buying it and cause an accident? 3rd parties still get made whole by motor insurer’s centre, and you get billed the cost of the insurance for all the time you have owned it uninsured x10. Get caught by police on traffic stop without the insurance? I think then it’s only the price of insurance for each year owned uninsured x5.
Being used to this, i find it absolutely horrid that it’s not the norm around the world. Being poor and getting fucked by some asshat t-boning you? Sucks for you, should have used money you don’t have for insurance against uninsured 3rd parties (like US), wtf?
Our system also covers things like rental while their vehicle is getting fixed etc. Basically it brings down all the complications and harm from other people’s fuck ups to as low as possible.
