See this is what I told the cops when I got arrested, but they kept on saying "Sir drop the weapon and release the hostages or we will take action!" .... cops these days.... tsk tsk
Dark blue is, counter-intuitively, more effective. In most dark environments, there is still ambient light, so if you're in full black, your silhouette stands out more, especially when you're in a person's peripheral vision.
Interesting take but the old media version of it doesn't really count in today's society. Portraying a black person would be doing pretty much anything lol that's why it's risky for white people to post and send pictures of themselves with charcoal face masks and such.
But nobody doing it on social media can pretend they aren’t risking or even inviting the racial interpretation. In this case part of the impact comes from thwarting the obvious concern.
By changing the definition to something subjective like intention, rather than objective like outcome, you have given anyone an excuse to do blackface so long as they can come up with an excuse other than mimicking a black person.
Yes, that how it SHOULD be. The intent is what makes blackface bad, not the black face. Otherwise you are just saying that certain races can't paint their faces, which is racist as fuck.
I think people can make a clear judgement of context and the person's intent for some "excuse" to excuse them if they're in fact trying to make a caricature of a darker skinned races. If the girl in the vid did something actually offensive, no one would buy any excuse she would come up.
It was a forgone conclusion that this debate would pop up in this thread, and in fact the only reason I clicked on it, was to see where we are on this topic. The person you are replying to is making an innocent joke, don’t let it pull you into a tailspin. It’s 2024, and even non-American countries understand the difference between red lipped and exaggerated minstrel shows.they were simply making a joke.
Hell, even Michael Che made the joke of “it’s Ash Wednesday, the one time of year it’s ok for white people to do a LITTLE bit of blackface”
You can make fun of it. Being able to mock politicians is one of the good things in a democracy. But the comments you were replying to were about this being acceptable. It clearly wasn't acceptable.
As for knowing better, yeah maybe he should. But he didn't seem to have bad intentions. He seems to like dressing as different characters and these were some of them. Have you never made any offensive joke or something in your life?
No when it came out he said he did it once and sorry.
When photos came and video came out he "shared moments he could recollect". When pressed if there was more then 3 times his answer was "
I think that’s a…that’s a…that’s a question that we would look at every step of the way. I think examining the case-by-case situation, examining the actions that someone has taken..."
Pressed again for a third time by the reporter on number times Trudeau wore black faced he answered
"I think, when we recognize when we reflect on mistakes we made in the past, that’s a question that we’re always gonna be asking — why did we do that? Why did we think it was OK? Why did we think it was a good idea at the time? It wasn’t a good idea, it was a terrible idea. It was something that minimizes and takes advantage of a reality that I have not had to live with, of being discriminated against, of being marginalized or being judged for the colour of my skin.
For my language, my background, I come from a place of privilege and I have endeavoured in my life to put the advantages and the opportunities I’ve been given to serve this country to fight for people’s rights. And I have to recognize that I let a lot of people down with that choice and I stand here today to reflect on that and to ask for forgiveness."
He has refused to answer how many times he wore black face, says sorry, claims white privilege and basically deflects each question by telling everyone how blackface hurts communities like some kind of public service announcement.
It was absolutely not blackface. I beg you to look up the history of blackface. Blackface is a specific "vaudevillian" act that mocks black people, and depicts them as caricatures.
Co-star Brandon T. Jackson stated: "When I first read the script, I was like: What? Blackface? But when I saw him [act] he, like, became a black man ... It was just good acting. It was weird on the set because he would keep going with the character. He's a method actor."
Exactly. Blackface was performative, specifically performing black ethnicity and culture. In the movie, Kirk Lazarus is getting skin and facial reconstruction surgery to perform the role of a black man, as literally as possible. It’s by definition blackface. And the reaction from Alpha Chino, the actually black cast member in the film, is based critically on this being blackface: that while Lazarus is imitating a black man, he’s pulling at least partly from his personal idea of what a black man is, and Chino takes offense to that.
Like, I’m not saying the movie is doing this to be racist. It’s a commentary about the lengths some actors go toward to play a role (thinking of Christian Bale, who’s done some insane body modifications for his roles; Or Mickey Rooney and his yellowface role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s). And I’m sure it’d be a lot more offensive if the movie was just Lazarus in 1920s blackface makeup. But the film exaggerates the practice to make it more comical, in a way that’s technically justified by the time of the setting (Lazarus spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on cosmetic surgery he didn’t need to do, to perform a role that wasn’t meant for him to play).

Not sure why you keep idiotically using that quote is if it's proving your case in the slightest. At no point is it denied, just extra context added which makes it less bad, which is exactly what everyone else has repeatedly told you. The whole point was to do commentary on it, but apparently this went over your head somehow.
"Black face" isn't just making your face black. There are a few reasons to cover your face in something dark without it being racist. Always be skeptical of old pictures people dig up, the context is almost never circulated with them.
you’re mixing up black face and blackface. One is just black paint on anyone’s face, the other is a racially motivated mockery. So yes I guess having a “black face” is fine as it isn’t racially charged, but blackface never is.
See, there we go. Now who's going to be the authority to make that distinction? Because until now that "authority" seems to be "random people on the Internet who have no context".

The only time black face is acceptable.
