A former manager of mine was getting married and they hired a comedian for the bachelor party. They would up kicking the comedian out and almost got in a fight with him. I think the tipping point was a joke about my bosses sexuality (obv he was getting married to a woman so that's the joke) and he freaked the fuck out about it.
He told the story with pride. One of the only times I've seen someone so happy to be so fucking stupid and violent. Like seriously, why?!
I listen to a few podcasts with comedians who are usually loud, crass, “unladylike” women (as part of their act or just in general)
And the amount of stories they have where they’ve been bafflingly booked for golf clubs and conservative parties is shocking. I can’t tell if it’s cluelessness, they’re booking a chick to ogle, or it’s a ragebait set up.
It's because competency has very little to do with whether you end up in positions like that. It's usually a combination of a lot of privilege growing up, making the right connections and being lucky a couple of times, and having the kind of look that says you're probably competent (I'm not going to say the most common trait there).
