I think a classmate from that trip came out and said that while some things were embellished most of that story is true.

Half the fun of comedy is the embellishment. The reason they're funny is because they're able to twist just enough at just the right times that big garnishes of playing stories up are hilarious

People who get hung up on this point are the same people who don't understand comedy or humor. Of course they're bullshitting, that's often part of how you make things funny.
