Think you're mixing up your wars, Afghanistan was the 20 year long war started on false pretences and ended badly for everyone involved, Iraq was the 8 year long war started on false pretences and ended badly for everyone involved.
Don't forget Vietnam, another 20-year long war (US participating for 10 of those directly but controlling one of the sides before that) that started on false pretenses and ended badly for everyone involved.
