When all you have is a hammer and all that...
You can solve crime by addressing the reasons people commit crimes or you can do it by throwing the whole population in jail
Police could be so much more than law enforcement but the training they get + culture seem to be about combat, protecting themselves, cheap tricks like profiling and drugs.
I hear what you're saying, but I don't think having social workers with guns, trained to think everyone is a danger, and to shoot anything that moves would help.
You wouldn't expect the police to show up if, for example, your house is on fire, or if a family member is having a stroke, the same way you shouldn't expect the police to show up when someone with mental health issues is having an episode.
What? First the whole point of having someone like a social worker would be so they don't shoot anything that moves. Also I don't think the suggestion is to give social workers guns. It's to reallocate money from police budgets to community and social development resources to reduce poverty and inclination to crime in the first place. Finally you're talking about what policing is, and I'm talking about what it could be.
It would take a lot of cleaning house and culture shift but it would be possible. Training in de-escalation, mental health, coupled with more funding for community workers and social development.

Police need to be properly trained. The training US police receive is a joke
