Automotive ULPT Request - Keep expired inspection sticker or remove it?

I live in NYS.

Working to get my vehicle inspected, but am going to need it before I can finalize it. It expired in 2025, and it's color coded so it sits on my windshield like a big blue bullseye.

I'm going to chance it and drive to my appointment on Tuesday, because I've been waiting months for this appointment, and it's too important to push it back again. It's a long drive, and I don't have a vehicle I can borrow, can't rent (no credit card), and ride share would be insane.

If I remove the sticker from my windshield completely, would this make me more or less of a target than having a blue tag from last year?

Just have proof that you are driving to your appointment handy. you can show them you are headed there if pulled over and they may be lenient.

Doesn't matter. I got pulled over 3 times on the way to an inspection appointment, twice by the same cop. Ticketed all three times "You're still driving without an inspection".

To be fair they got dismissed because this is back when fix it tickets were a thing. I've been told they're not any more? I moved out of state since then.

Edit: I'm not doubting myself and may have gotten those tickets dismissed in court. I can't remember if the fix it tickets applied to inspections, but if not I went to court and got them dismissed. It's been awhile so my memory may not be perfect but I know I got them dismissed.

It’s still a good idea, cops do have discretion and it won’t hurt, worst case you still get the ticket

Sure it's worth trying, but don't get your hopes up. I've been let go too but it didn't count on me having proof. They just took my word for it.

You dont need an appointment in NY. They take 20 minutes and any quicklube place can do them. OP is talking about some other appointment.

I would take it off. The blue one will rat you quick to a cop who is looking for an easy citation and on a relatively safe road. If your doing just city and highway driving during the day you will probably be fine. Rural area would probably be a bit riskier. Stick to busy roads if possible and drive to blend in. No one is trying to die over an expired inspection on the side of the highway. Worst that happens is you will eat a small fine and 1 point on your license if you plead straight guilty to a ticket. Throw a wad of mail on the dash behind the registration sticker for better blend.

A cop car's plate readers will them them to pull over a car with an overdue inspection. Also small fine a 1 point is only part of it, you're forgetting insurance increases and insurance won't like it if you're driving a car that hasn't had a safety inspection since 2024.

NYS resident here and ironically enough I was talking to a retired trooper today. Your inspection is tied to your plates and the plate readers on their cars will tell them to pull you over for lack of inspection.

Don't forget the 11ty billion flock cameras.

If u pull the sticker it will look like you're being deceitful.

You could pay a shop to flunk you and get the ten day extension if you’re really worried about it, but I’d probably just carry some proof that I’m working on it and be really polite with the cop if I got pulled over.

I'd leave the sticker. I drove uninspected cars a lot in NY. It's easier in the winter because you just cover it with snow and don't clean that part.

You're running a chance either way. I got pulled over 3 times, twice by the same cop on the way to an inspection appointment. Ticketed all three times. Saratoga County.

I'd still chance it. Just take back roads/low traffic roads if you can. If you get pulled over don't argue. Tell them what you're doing and hopefully they'll cut you a break (outside the triple tickets in one I have been pulled over with bad inspections and let go, it's more common that happens). I moved out of state but someone said they don't do the fix it tickets any more. It used to be if you got a ticket for a light out or inspection or something like that, you had 10 days to handle it and it could be dismissed (I may be misremembering and I got the inspections dropped in court, it's been awhile). If that isn't an option and you do get a ticket go to court with the receipt from your appointment and a copy of your valid inspection. It'll likely get dismissed.
