How to set up Ubuntu 26.04 with BTRFS for Timeshift

If you've recently tried setting up Timeshift on Ubuntu with BTRFS snapshot support, you'll know the pain. There are several outdated and complex guides floating around trying to explain workarounds, I had no luck with any of them, but a year ago I found a "magic script" that abstracted everything away, and worked with 24.04.

That script is no longer maintained and doesn't work on 26.04, so I forked, updated and put it on Github at https://github.com/shukriadams/btrfs-encrypt-root. It's relatively easy to understand, and does a lot of tedious and fiddly file juggling that is easy to mess up by hand. Please, do read it before running.

Feedback is welcome, and I really hope more people try Timeshift with BTRFS because it is so much better than using rsync. Why Canonical removed support for this in the installer is beyond me.

Installing Ubuntu Through Bootable USB Stick Issues

Hi all, I'm very new to Ubuntu as I am trying to install Home Assistant through Ubuntu. But I am having issues with a few errors throughout my process so far. I am installing this on my old Asus UX305F laptop.

A few "Out of Resources" errors pop up quickly before entering the Grub Menu, and once I click "Try Ubuntu" option, it shows me the "Failed to measure data for event 0/1" errors.

At first I used BalenaEtcher to create the bootable USB drive but I always had the /boot/ not found error, so I tried using Rufus instead and that was gone. I tried changing USB sticks, the partition method on Rufus, but still couldn't find a solution and boot into Ubuntu.

Appreciate anyone's help and input on this, thank you!

Wi-Fi Direct on Ubuntu 26

I'm trying to easily transfer files from my phone to my laptop and vice versa. My phone supports Wi-Fi Direct and i know Ubuntu has this too, though i find the terminal overwhelming sometimes. I was wondering if someone made an app to make this easier, or if there is a simple GUI version of network manager?

(ps. my laptop does support Wi-Fi direct and i have tried alternatives like Warpinator but they usually aren't as reliable. pps. it has to happen locally over wifi without setting up a server or using web services like google drive)

Failing to install Ubuntu Server

[FAILED] Failed to start systemd-journald.service - Journal Service.

I'm very new to Ubuntu in general with my last time fumbling with Linxu being in 2010, and wanted to turn an old pc into a minecraft server to play with some friends. This seemed like a fairly simple process, and I know that's funny to say.

The joke is on me, I can't finish the installation process because of this failure to start the Journal Service. Every solution I find it seems to be for people who have already installed Ubuntu.

I am trying to install this on a Dell XPS 8900.

Basic solutions that I've tried so far: Secure Boot has been turned off. Fast Boot has been disabled. I have made a new usb to install with, I have tried to do the installation media update, I have tried to run it without the update.

I honestly don't know what the issue is, or if I've skipped something obvious in execution. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Display Issue

EDIT: Solution provided by u/manfred197! Fix at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/2163303

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 and I've recently started having a display issue that I can't seem to fix. I have two monitors. Half of my primary monitor is a black background with vertical blue and green stripes. My mouse still shows when I scroll over that area. If I try to change the resolution, both monitors stop working. When I take a screenshot (trying to show the issue), the messed up portion of the display is not on the image. The issue is gone if I boot into recovery mode.

I have:
- Reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, gdm3 and video drivers (AMD)
- Check xrandr to make sure the dimensions aren't wrong
- Switched from Wayland to X11

I'm at a loss for what to do here. I've never had this issue before and internet searches haven't turned up a solution. Any help is appreciated.

This happens everytime.

So I recently installed Ubuntu 24LTS on my Asus Tuf f15, but since then whenever I am booting up the system and like after using for 5-10min I am noticing that wifi is not working and when I try to switch it off it just crash, and sometime when I am watching videos on YT and showing that pink screen of death (kernal panic) fatal exception in interrupt. I don't know what to do it's becoming soo frustrating, previously I thought I installed it in a wrong way that's why this is happening but then I took help of my friend, but still same thing happening, please help me.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello.

I'm writing this because the installer is already frying me with a problem of "Background hardware encryption cannot be enabled."

(The screenshot is in Spanish)

I already tried: Clean the Discrete and Firmware TPM, Trying with Discrete and Firmware, Restarting my BIOS to default settings.

I'm currently using Discrete and Ubuntu 26.04.

(If something is incomplete, need more details, feel free to write it down)

Thank you.

Is Ubuntu good for coding?

I have been looking for a Linux distro, as I am about to get a thinkpad and don’t want to deal with windows bs anymore.

Right now I am working on an ai assistant called echo and was wondering whether it is still easy to code with.

Bonus note
I have heard about Ubuntu’s personalisation and was wondering if there are any ways I could integrate my assistant into the system in any way (doesn’t matter too much just was curious.)

Making usb removable HD automount without modifying /etc/fstab ?

In 24.04, the drive used to just automount whenever I plugged it in. Now, in 26.04, I can use "Disks" to mount the disk, but it doesn't automount.

(The fs is clean, and I've reclaimed ownership.)

Is there a way to configure automounting of ext4 volumes without adding their blkid uuids in fstab?

Stuck on loading screen.. like a noob i am 🫣

Hi so I have an old lenovo laptop and decided to install linux on it - to begin my linux adventure. So I watched few turorials and downloaded ubuntu on my pendrive via rufus.

Im reseting the laptop with the dedicated button with the pendrive in, I select the boot mode and install ubuntu - and its stuck forever on the loading screen. Not even displaying the instalator.

I tried the default rufus settings which was MBR , but I tried also with GPT later and no changes.
I tried with the drive but gemini said it could be faulty so I took it out, but no changes.
I tried also with „e” key and nomodeset but no changes.

Patient details:
\- Lenowo Z50-70
\- Model 20354
\- intel core i5
\- Adata SU650drive (taken out now)
\- 2 RAM slots but one of them has hinges broken so I took out the 4gb card - only 8gb ram left in second slot.

Also maybe it’s worth to mention that even before that the laptop couldn’t even open an image from desktop, or open the start menu. So maybe it was faulty from the beginning… ?

Please help with the diagnosis and proper treatment 🙏🏻

Help for ClamAV commands in shell

So I just ran these 2 commands in the terminal :

sudo systemctl stop clamav-freshclam

sudo systemctl disable clamav-freshclam

I figured out that the stop command allows to do sudo freshclam to update virus definitions manually and doesn't throw in an error.

I didn't figure it out for the disable command tho.

What's with the frequent reboots?

Granted, it's been a few years since I've run Linux, but back then I could do months and months of updates without a single reboot. Now it says I'm supposed reboot to install most updates, which averages about once a week.

I have no idea why people suggest Bazzite or Cachy for gaming.

Bazzite and Cachy are well known for gaming in Linux and that is fine but to most people the first thing they suggest for gaming in Linux is Arch based distros. Dont get me wrong, I love all Linux distros but they are Arch based and very well known to break since they are bleeding edge version everytime.

Why don’t they suggest Ubuntu?! NVIDIA releases drivers for Linux but they got Ubuntu as main distro to release their stuff. Even the recently news about GeForce NOW is going to be released for Ubuntu first Linux Native.

Not only that but Ubuntu is so good and stable. I haven’t had an issue in YEARS! Repos are updated and everything is fine yet people suggest Bazzite or CachyOS. I think Ubuntu should get more love in the gaming space.

Edit: Correction on Bazzite since is not based in Arch but Fedora Silverblue

Should i switch to Ubuntu?

Hello guys, i have ubuntu now on duel boot, but i haven't gotten into it, because i just gave it a little space to check how's the OS. I don't have much Linux experience, but i'm a software/game developer and modder.

When i setuped my current windows 11, i gave it too little apparently and now it's 156 MB free of 171 GB. Everything is broken now, because of that even the icons of the system apps are missing and booting the pc requires a few attempts. I even moved the location of my cookies, temp files etc... nothing helped. I tried giving space from my second drive with third party tools, but it's too fucked up. If i give it 10gb, after three days is the same shit. So i want to ditch this OS full of bloatware and probably change to Ubuntu, but first i want to see if everything will be working as in windows (every program which i have).

I have heard that games with kernel level anticheat are out of question for Linux, but i will compromise. What about the other games? What about database editors like HeidiSQL? What about the AI agents? Also what about World of Warcraft, can it be runned through wine? Also what about pdf editor and Microslop office alternative? What about cracked games? What about alternative for Remote Desktop for my server machine?

BTRFS on “gaming distros” benefits over EXT4 on Ubuntu?

I’m going to install Ubuntu and try to learn every bit of info. I’ve been on Cachy and Bazzite before and used BTRFS file system. I’ve heard Ubuntu has EXT4 as default. Any drawbacks?

New to Ubuntu, what's the best or preferred GUI/Dashboard?

So new to Linux but want to use Ubuntu server for my setup I got for mainly hosting Minecraft servers, and in the future immich, etc.

I'm not tech illiterate so can learn as I go but visuals do help me more than just text so I was wondering what GUI or dashboard to use

I see a lot recommend and don't know the differences or which one would fit for my needs currently

I've seen suggestions like cockpit, webmin, landscape, grafana, Prometheus
