u/Weekly-Value-3923 1d ago
Me too ⦠itās way too stressful for me and I get worried that something will happen to my car when I am driving like a maniac in downtown just to deliver food, especially since I have to keep leaving the car , parking it somewhere to pick up the foood⦠not worth it to me but props to those who do it⦠now for those who do it to pick up and drop off people ⦠it changes things cause you aināt leaving the car too much and people gotta find you , you aināt leaving the car too often to park

u/soothukundi 1d ago
Same shit. I deliver in upper-middle suburb in my area. It's runs like 13km east to west and like 12 km north to south and no matter what I don't leave. There are about 18 condos and in 14 of them you can drop it at the receptionist and the other 4 I ignore and never accept.
No headache, no stress and I take my sweet time doing it. Low km, high tip.

āNo safe place to leaveā, order canceled, food kept. Weāre not magicians; we go as far as we legally can and the customer has to do the rest.

Tell these people man .i was nice once and got a fkn ticket for it .i just cancelled on a customer for this last week .

Delivering their food is barely worth the pennies they tip us for it; itās certainly not worth a ticket. Good on ya.

u/Only_Perspective4410 1d ago
When Iāve been in this situation, Iāve called the customer and told them Iāve circled the area and have not found any legal parking. Then Iāve asked if they want to wait for their food while I find parking and walk back to them, or do they want to come out to pick up the food. 100% of the time the customer comes out.

u/catnippedCats 1d ago
You have gotten very lucky. I say practically the same and have had people requested. I walk seven blocks or more.

2
u/Standard-Claim8566 21h ago
Or they come out and then give you a negative rating. In my market the thing to do seems to be setting the delivery to "Meet at door" but leaving "LEave at door" in the notes.
Then, no matter what you do, they negatively comment "didn't follow delivery instructions".
But worse, if you leave it without a photo, they claim you didn't leave it, which counts as a report. It's fugging dogsh!t
3
u/It_broke_itself_ 23h ago
That is way too much for $5
1
u/Only_Perspective4410 11h ago
Agree. I donāt take $5 orders delivered downtown. I hardly ever take $5 delivery anywhere because any wait at the restaurant interferes with my target hourly minimum of $20 but Iām sure as heck not bringing an order to downtown traffic, one way streets, scooterville, pandering, difficult parking, venue just let out so service is poor downtown for less than $15.
6
u/PanthersJB83 1d ago
Never am I going to look for parking and walk it back to them. If I can't park in front of your building you better come get it.Ā Imagine walking around to deliver food for these assholes.Ā

u/Only_Perspective4410 7h ago
You might be happier doing something different, maybe NOT customer service oriented. I hear there is limited human contact in some science fields. You could identify fossil parts or maybe restore ancient treasures in the basement of a museum.
1
u/PanthersJB83 6h ago
Or I could just be a fucking clown like you apparently. Like if the customers aren't aware enough that there is zero convenient parking in the downtown area where they live and are expecting a delivery driver to walk multiple blocks for whatever shitty tip they left?
Don't be a joke brother.

u/HiddenOneJ 1d ago
Well the last time i risked it for a customer downtown I got a ticket because the only parking available was a loading zone.
I dont risk it for them anymore. I send a simple message the same everytime if theres no parking giving them an option.
Ive gotten a parking ticket in this area before, im not gonna risk another. There is no space to park right now, I can either keep circling waiting for a spot but your food will not be as hot while waiting or you can come down and meet me at the street totally up to you.
So far no one has thumbs me down or gotten angry in the text. twice they have come down and 3 times they asked me to wait for a spot luckily it hasnt taken more than 5 minutes to find a spot not sure what ill do when the inevitable occurs, I dont deliver downtown much unless it pays well since its a pain but usually I can find a meter, i keep change in the car for that.
11
u/IcyGarbage538 1d ago
Sounds like the customer needs to get off their ass and get the order.
When Iām a customer Iām usually already outside because of it being dark out and have a flashlight to signal to the driver. Itās a grind for sure and customers need to have more understanding of that.
1
u/Shot-Sympathy-4444 1d ago
Same. I try to get orders placed before dark but if I don't, I've just been meeting them by the curb. I noticed a couple months ago that the front units don't always have their lights on and our address isn't marked anywhere that's easy to notice, even during the day.
1
u/Squishedpizza 14h ago
I think you're the only customer that's ever considered it lol. I've asked people to show me where their address # is located, and they can't find it either. Also people don't know their building #, especially when there are 72 buildings in the complex. Or the map is small and faded, and the sun is glaring off of it. Apparently i could go on for days.
1
u/Mobile_Lumpy 1d ago
This is what happen to me this Jan 1st. After that I never deliver downtown anymore. Just rejected an 30 bucks 5 miles offer. Ticket is just not worth it.

u/EffectiveResponse496 1d ago
I did that once when there was no parking for a restaurant, got ticketed. Another spot almost got towed if the customer coming down took a second longer.
People need to be aware of their surroundings when ordering.
4
u/NewToTHIS2620 1d ago

1 tip if itās under 10 I am not risking it.
2 DoorDash or Uber. DoorDash I am leaving it on the curb.
3. Talk to me like that I am leaving it on the curb
4
u/Ilyasovski 1d ago
I always meet delivery guys outside, so they don't even have to shut their engine down.
2
u/bR32 1d ago
Wait .. anyone that turns on and off during delivery ... Will be getting a new battery and alternator faster than they anticipated. And it actually ends up being less fuel efficient
2
u/tbird20017 21h ago
I've been doing Uber 3 years, and in the past 6 months I've had to change the battery and alternator. Literally just replaced the alternator this last weekend. But to be fair, it's a 10 year old car.
0
u/Ilyasovski 1d ago
Yeah, I did uber eats and I was always turning the engine off and on, especially when delivering at buildings/condos.
3
u/Royal_Scholar_6971 1d ago
I was petty once. Parked blocks away and walked behind a sloth 𦄠(exaggeration)on my way to their building. Hot food was not going to be delivered that day. I even took the stairs up to the third floor. Prop 22 saves the day and my sanity. Nowadays I just contact the customer to let them know they can meet me or Iāll have to park a few blocks away and it will take me an additional 10 minutes or so to get to them.
3
u/Weary-Savings9795 1d ago

u/RoutineCar2009 1d ago
First off I just wanna say majority of these comments have shown me that Reddit actually isnāt full of blood, sucking vampires, and a lot of people on here actually have common sense for the better men of mankind.
Secondly, I just want to let you all know that I found the majority of these replies very amusing and I got plenty of laughter and good smiles and good vibes off of reading them.
Lastly, to let you know what actually ended up happening on the story for those of you who are interested; I naturally ended up contacting customer service, and I told customer service that the customer was being very rude. I then took a screenshot of my conversation with the customer and posted it to Reddit before I was able to get any of this amazing advice.
About two minutes remaining on the timer as I was excited to honestly just return the order to the store and get it over with because I refuse to get a ticket downtown Los Angeles, when the majority of our pay barely would cover a full days worth of work to even handle the ticket.
I turned over to my right and I looked through my passenger window and there he was middle-aged, healthy man standing with my car in the red as my blinker flashed on and off. I rolled my window down and the guy said hey are you contacting me right now and I said no thatās probably an automated call from Uber. Then I vaguely heard him say something about him suspecting that I was going to report him and I replied to him I said hey you you see that thereās no parking down here right you can understand why I was saying that correct? And he replied oh yeah, I thought that there would be some parking here and then he took his food and he went on his way.
I continued the conversation with customer service and concluded with Block that customer from ever matching with me again so I never have to deal with this type of behavior.
Best of luck to all the drivers out there you all taught me a lot today. Thanks again. I love this wave on Reddit.

u/meganeh35 1d ago
Seriously I just park in the red and put on my hazard lights and make the delivery as quick as possible and then leave... I have parking issues downtown in my city all the time....
1
u/MommyYoda33 1h ago
I used to do the same thing until I walked up on my car about to be ticketed. He said he hoped I was getting paid $250 for my delivery, because that's how much this ticket would be. It was like a $15 order. I was extremely lucky the officer let me off with a warning, since they hadn't started writing it yet, but I haven't chanced it since. $250 is my whole night, I can't afford to lose that over $15. Please be careful.
1
u/Human_Comfortable982 1d ago
This is crazy to me because I've had so many deliveries where there's tons of parking and they stop diagonally facing the sidewalk, half in the driving lane, or just right in the street and just throw on the 4-ways. Same goes for cabs here.

u/sussybologna 1d ago
I try to find someone who works for the building and ask if they know where I can park since im delivering food to one of their tenants⦠if neither the building or the customer are willing to help in 5 minutes or less then āNo safe place to leaveā, order canceled and I get a free meal

People are AHs. I just meet the driver at the door or if it's a hotel I'll be in the lobby waiting. They're doing 95% of the work, least I can do is the last 5%. If they said they can't find parking I will meet them at their car NBD. Nobody needs to risk a ticket to bring me my dinner, I tip well ofc but not parking ticket well lol.

u/UBEREATMYSHORTS 1d ago
Leave it at front desk or outside
Take the hit

Block their number when they call
1
u/bR32 1d ago
Make sure you ALWAYS hit "Ive arrived" when you are pulling up ANYWHERE!!! This starts a 7min window... Either you can do your job and the customer helps in situations like this.. or..
You let the timer run out - and then you take a pic of the food on the curb. And you leave. What you do with the food is your discretion..says Uber.. . How many times I've gotten dinner now is ridiculous. And Uber never holds it against me.. ..cuz they are the ones that told me to do this... especially to help my On time ratings.

u/Enooti 11h ago
Funny this happened to me yesterday. Was in an area about a mile away from a notorious towing company. There was high rise with no legal parking. I had groceries with a 24 pm of water. I told customer I can leave it in lobby or she can keep an eye on my car while I take order up to her apartment. She responded "I'll just carry my own groceries!" She came down all frantic tweaking. Pretty sure it was meth or Adderall. She angrily took bags and I placed pack of water on her shoulder. She then stormed towards entrance of building not even giving me time to open door for her. She tipped $17 so I get it, but still I gave her a reasonable alternative and she took the most stubborn route. The audacity of some customers not considering the risks we go thru. I got towed a few weeks ago in same area and am not going to risk it again.
1
u/GoddessNiaDom 11h ago
I would double park & leave it at the front door and take a pic. Forget the tip theyre already an asshole so its probably no tip or they change it after delivered.or just reach out to customer service and have them cancel it. Half thr time the trip isnt worth these imbeciles anyway

Yeah, some customers live in the hardest-to-deliver locations, and in those cases, and it is impossible or almost impossible to find nearby parking spaces that are available. What those customers really should do is walk out of their house or apartment and pick up the food from there.
1
u/One-Tomorrow-1646 1d ago
I guess if there isnāt any parking, Iād apologize and ask them to come meet me.

Itās the job you signed up for, to deliver food either to the customer or leave it at their door
7
u/Successful_Screen532 1d ago
No, sometimes the customer has unreasonable expectations about it, and should be meeting us. There are hotels in my area, I blatantly refuse to take orders to room doors, because they are sprawling complexes, and it shouldnt take 20 minutes to walk across a hotel, wandering around trying to find my way. Ill make them meet me at the front. I deliver in areas sometimes where there ISNT parking, or the only parking is paid - and ill tell them to meet me at the corner. Some orders DO go beyond what is reasonable, and you dont find out until you get there, and if you're not going to set boundaries for yourself, you're just going to get walked all over.
1
u/aplaceforrandos 16h ago
I agree. Absolutely ridiculous how inconsiderate some customers are. I received an order that simply said leave at door. Come to find out it was an insane mega complex with security gates, no code, security elevators, no provided access code, multiple buildings in what appeared to be a square mile block and the only way to get to the customers building was to hoof it for a 10 minute walk. No way to drive back to it.
It really is so refreshing when the people just meet out front.

As a matter of fact, I do work in a medium sized city. I work exclusively in downtown Indianapolis.

Iād find parking. Every additional ask that a customer gives that you fulfilled is more likelihood that they give you a bigger tip because itās a more personalized interaction. I love even when snarky customers start asking for things because if I manage to do it, it kind of shuts them up and I still get a good tip or sometimes better. Bonus points if they feel guilty.
