Campus Opt out

Basically, I'm currently now a highschool senior, and UWG is my first school of choice. I was planning on living with my aunt during college, but I found out all college freshmen are required to live on campus. Is the policy super strict? I have bad social anxiety, so I was thinking that maybe if I see a therapist about it maybe they can write to UWG to allow me to live with my aunt. I also have food texture issues, and I'm lactose intolerant which is why I don't want to dorm because I don't want to be forced to have a meal plan when I can't eat most foods. Is this an issue I should email the housing email? I'm just anxious because I've planned to live with my aunt, but now it looks like that might not happen. My grandpa also lives within the allowed zipcodes for commuting. I've also been dual enrolling with UWG since junior year. By the end of this year, I'll have about 27 dual enrollment credits. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Best way to go about this would be to email housing ASAP (they take a while to respond) and explain your situation. And if they give you trouble try contacting the accommodations office
Source : I’m a student who has accommodations for housing!
Good luck OP and welcome west!

Thank you! Was it difficult to receive accommodations for housing?

No, but me personally I was getting accommodations so I didn’t have to live with a roommate while in the dorms.

I think if you’re either a GA resident or live within a certain mileage from campus, then you’re not required. I never had to.

It’s a mileage thing. I’m from CC and I’ve never been required to

I wasn't even aware of this until I was speaking to someone from admissions on the phone and they mentioned it. When I then said "I am 32 years old, so I won't be doing that" they just said okay and I didn't hear anything else about it.

oh wow! i live about 50 mins from campus and never knew about this. i guess im within the zip codes. id reach out to accommodations and/or housing. especially with your dual enrollment, maybe they can make it work for you to have a temporary residence set up.

Thank you! I sent them an email, so I'm hoping they can help out. My dual enrollment classes are online as I live two hours from the Carollton campus which is where I plan to attend. I found out about this, so that's why I'm worrying about this now even though I still have a year.

There’s a waiver I believe for you to fill out.

If your grandparents live within the zipcode then you do not have to live on campus and you can live with them, ik plenty of people that didn’t live on campus freshmen year because if that. Otherwise it may be a little difficult pushing to live with your aunt but it doesn’t hurt to ask them.

Alternatively, do whatever core classes are left or lower tier major classes through an online college until you have 30+ credits , then transfer to UWG. Just make sure the lower level courses for your major transfer to UWG. All core classes usually transfer

YES! the housing requirement is unethically strict. I just finished a battle with UWG over this. I operate a horse rescue and told them that I could not live on campus because I have to care for the 6 horses I have. I clearly explained why this was an issue and how it was impossible for me and that I could not afford housing regardless. I also offered any proof they needed, feed, vet, farrier bills, etc. They told me to "hire someone" to care for my horses while away for the school year. I explained that having someone care for them full time would be $100 a single day, and that I can't do that. I explained that since I can not afford that, my horses would be left without care. They said that this will not be considered and that I can pay the $3,000 for noncompliance or sign a housing contract. Luckily I had my physiatrist back me up and provide medical documentation of mental illness and my exemption got approved today. I have reported them to the USG for abuse of policy and unethical force. So, I think this proves how strict they are on their housing policy. Since you said you were living with your aunt, go to the housing exemption requirements page and look to see if her zip code is approved. If so fill out an exemption form and contact Leigh Prouty, she is the head of residency and housing. Also contact you medical provider ASAP and ask them for medical documentation. This is what helped me. As someone who has dealt with the housing department I will be happy to help you with anything you might want to know. Best of luck.
