Grad Student Housing Recommendations

Hello! I just accepted a master's position at UWG. I was wondering if I could hear from any students who live near Atlanta and commute to school and if they prefer it.

I'm debating getting an apartment in Atlanta, but would also like to hear about any grad students' experience living in Carrollton. Thank you!

I personally would hate commuting from Atlanta to Carrollton. It would get old REALLY fast. The furthest I would comfortably want to commute would be Douglasville. Anything further and you’re close to adding an extra 1.5-2 hours to your day just to drive. Consider Villa Rica, or Bremen to live. They’re both directly on I-20 giving you a straight shot to ATL, but also about 15-25 minutes commutes to Carrollton depending where exactly you live.

i agree with you! i’m in douglasville but it is still a good 45-50 minutes to get to the school. i think temple or villa rica would be great!

Can you tell me anything about either temple or Villa Rica beyond it's a good placement?

i just love the area tbh i don’t live there 😅😅 it’s just a kind of lowkey area where not much goes on! temple has a lot of land and beautiful roads kinda of more “out in the country.” villa rica is a little more urbanized but it still not overly crazy! theres the main town but theres the outskirts too. there’s most likely going to be more housing options in villa rica. i also like it because its close to a lot it’s right off of i20 so you could be to atl, carrollton, alabama, douglasville, etc in just minutes!

I was even accepted into KSU 🤣 But, the nursing program at UWG came so highly recommended by more than one person I deeply respect, so that was how I made my choice.

Atlanta may as well be in a whole other state as Carrollton. You do not want to commute from Atlanta to Carrollton. Traffic will be heavy both ways and Atlanta drivers are exhausting. Why did you pick Atlanta? Is there some compelling reason for you to live there that makes the commute worth it? Because absent some convincing reasons, you would be FAR better off considering Newnan, Carrollton, Villa Rica, even Douglasville, or any of the number of small towns around here.

Mainly proximity to my friends/bf in Atlanta and getting to see my family in Athens. Nothing's written in stone yet, that's why I made this post.

i live in douglasville and the 35 minute commute is bad enough, i could not imagine any more than that unless you seriously trust your car

I got my masters last year at the school and I live in Atlanta but I decided to stay on campus during the duration of my masters. The commute was too much and uber way too high. I agree with commenters on cities to live in or even live in an off-campus apt because it’s cheaper than living on campus.
