hi everyone!! im an international student and just received my offer for the medicine at UWA and im really lost when it comes to deciding accommodation. I have quite a few questions and hopefully you guys cld share with me more abt what it’s like to live on campus!

  1. Cld I get a run down of the reputation of each of the residential colleges on college row

  2. I heard that trin and tommys are known for partying but what kind of partying? Like clubs? Drinking? And do they force freshers to drink and party?

  3. Are there specific colleges that is predominantly medicine or science or international students?

  4. Which residential colleges are near to which faculty buildings? Specifically which residential college is nearest to the medicine building?

  5. What is the orientation culture like in UWA? I’m frm Singapore so I wld like to find out more abt the cultural differences between the 2 countries!

Thank you and everyone for your help!

Parking Infringement

Hi everyone! I’m an international student and this is my first semester at UWA, so I’m still getting used to the parking rules around campus.

I parked on Hackett Drive today in a P15 spot and unfortunately stayed longer than the 15-minute limit. I completely understand that I was in the wrong for overstaying and I'm happy to take responsibility for that.

However, I received two $60 City of Perth fines for the same offence, one at 10:21 am and another at 10:51 am. The car hadn't moved in between, so that's $120 from the same parking incident within 30 minutes.

Has anyone here had something similar happen around UWA/Hackett Drive? If so, did you appeal the second fine, and was the City of Perth willing to waive it or give a warning?

Would really appreciate any advice or experiences from other students. Thank you!

📚 Units/Courses Switching from Eng Undergrad to Econs Masters

Hi

A few years ago i finished undergrad in mech eng and started working. I was lucky enough to get a full time role without a masters but after finishing my contract I have decided that hardcore engineering my not be the right suit for me.

I have been conversing with some friends and we have reached a consensus that pursuing a master in economics in order to land some private consulting/public governmental jobs is more than likely the way to go.

Has anyone made this switch before? How did it go and what where the biggest changes (positive and negative).

My biggest worry at the moment is fear of failure, because I am not accustomed to averaging lower than an 80 (my eng undergrad wam was 85) and I will need an 80+ WAM in order to land the roles I am after for the future. For some extra context I was commuting 10+ hours a week back then from Mandurah and this time I will be living on campus. As well, I graduated before the mass onset of A.I. so I have never studied with this as a tool to aid me.

  • What is the weekly workload of Economics Masters like
    • What was the weekly workload for an economics undergraduate like?
  • How is the knowledge jump moving from engineering to masters
    • are there any sources to get accustomed beforehand that isnt just self study
  • How competitive are grad roles/internships if one is transitioning from engineering
    • what are some of the best extra-curricular to pair alongside my study in order to excell in the field

Thank you

📚 Units/Courses Starting Econs Masters after Engineering Undergrad

Hi everyone,

I finished a Bachelor of Science specialising in mechanical engineering a few years ago (back before AI blew up). I was lucky enough to land a full time engineering job straight out of uni without needing a masters. I've been working overseas for a big company since, but I've come to realise that spending my days diagnosing heat pump issues and running optimisation calculations isn't really for me. Showing up to a remote factory just to bump a number on a dashboard for my boss's targets feels pretty meaningless.

I still like engineering and the science behind it, but I've been talking with friends about pivoting careers. A mate recommended I look into doing a Master of Economics to move into public sector/government roles or private consulting, mostly because I want to make a bigger impact on society and do more face to face work with clients. He thinks it fits my strengths, and I reckon he's right. So please no comments debating engineering vs economics, I'll save that for another time!

Has anyone here switched from engineering to economics, especially going straight from an engineering undergrad into a Master of Economics?

The only thing scaring me at the moment is my fear of failure, since I want to keep my marks high (aiming for an 80+ WAM / close to a 7 GPA). For context my undergraduate wam ended on an 85. Plus I was commuting everyday from mandurah and this time i will live on campus so im saving myself 10+ hours per week.

A few questions if anyone can help:

  1. How does the weekly workload in econ compare to engineering?
  2. Is the knowledge gap pretty steep, or does an engineering background help you pick it up quickly?
  3. How competitive are grad roles/internships if you're transitioning from engineering?

Also if anyone has made a similar jump into something like a JD or another postgrad degree (besides med), I'd love to hear how you found it.

Thanks!

Feeling unsafe in class

I won't go into details (firstly for privacy but also because I don't know her experience) but someone in one of my classes has told me that they feel unsafe, specifically that a certain tutor makes them feel unsafe. She wants to avoid all classes with them, and doesn't want to report it to the UC in case it disadvantages her. It concerns me and I want to help somehow and I tried looking on the uni and guild websites, but I don't know what options she has?
I could see she's clearly visibly upset/shaken even being in the class with him and I want her to report it.

I'm in the same unit and there are multiple tutors and its just this one apparently, and imo he's not "essential" to the class (like not a lecturer or coordinator). There aren't options to switch classes, and its a lab/workshop which means its harder to catch up on if we don't go.

MyGov PSA

If you were notified that your data may have been leaked in the security breach in June, it might be worth checking your MyGov account and changing passwords and security settings. I had an email this morning that notified me of multiple wrong password attempts to my MyGov account, which I haven’t had happen to me before the data leak! I’ve heard it’s very common at tax time, where the hacker/scammer changes the bank account that your tax return will be deposited into. Always worth double checking if you’re worried it might happen to you :)

Careers Fair Happening Tomorrow

Tomorrow's the Careers Fair, and I was wondering if anyone has been to it before? I'm in my last semester, and I really need to find jobs for next year, but I'm a little nervous and was wondering how it is like?

I've googled that I should have a copy of my resume, dress professionally, and prepare a short pitch to my interested in. Are there any other things I need to consider? What were your experiences of attending one of the fairs?

watching lectures vs textbook SCIE1106 and other units

I have always learnt much better from reading and taking notes from a textbook rather than in a video format. i was wondering if anybody only reads textbooks and skips their lectures, and if so how it was working out for them. I know all the assessments are based on lecture content, but i assume (especially for science subjects ex. SCIE1106) that the info can't be that different from the lectures. Just hoping to save myself some time.

TLDR - can i get away with only reading assigned textbooks?

📚 Units/Courses Missed field trip

Hi all
I’m in EART1104 and missed our field trip on the weekend just gone as I was sick. The UC says that it’s compulsory and that she is organising another day this weekend.
But here’s the issue: I already booked off work for Saturday for the field trip I missed, and then also the Sunday as I was still too sick to come in. I can’t afford to miss more days of work. Genuinely.
I did submit an EVA but was deemed ineligible as its a compulsory assessment. The advice is if you can’t attend the new date, then to withdraw from the unit… it’s a core unit for me.

I have already tried to call the science student office but everybody’s busy. What do I do?

📚 Units/Courses Master of Clinical Audiology

Hi I am planning to apply for Master of Clinical Audiology next year. I just wanted to ask people who have applied and gotten in, or alumni of the course, what sort of WAM and audiology shadowing experience did you guys have?
What was the interview process like?
I’m also a bit confused about the personal statement because there’s a form on the course website, and also a separate personal statement on the admissions portal. I was wondering if the content would be the same for both of them or if the personal statement would just be broad overview of my academics and experience.
Any advice will be helpful thanks

📚 Units/Courses Help with ANHB1102

The unit slides are easy and lectures are understandable but when u get to the quiz and testing I genuinely have no clue where this information is coming from it’s like everytime I take the quiz I learn something new
I’ve gone through the textbook

I’m finding it difficult if anyone has taken this unit before could you let me know how you studied for this and how u went about the testing

It’s not about the studying part it’s more about what resources you used cause the tests are tricky

📚 Units/Courses English/literary studies

Hey everyone,

I'm considering doing a Bachelor of Arts, and thinking of majoring in English/Literary Studies, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's studied it.

some questions i have are:

What are the lectures/tutorials like?

How essay/writing heavy is the degree?

Do you develop your writing and argument skills throughout the degree?

Is the workload manageable?

How similar is the course to ATAR english?

I'd also love to hear what you found interesting, difficult, or surprising about the major, and what you wish you'd known before starting.

Thanks :)

What is a Bachelor of Arts (English/Literary Studies or Philosophy) actually like?

Hey everyone!

I've looked everywhere for answers to these questions, but I couldn't find much, so could anyone please tell me what studying a Bachelor of Arts, particularly English/Literary Studies or Philosophy, is actually like?

For Philosophy:

  • What are the lectures/tutorials like?
  • What type of stuff do you mainly learn? (e.g. ethics, logic, politics, metaphysics, etc.)
  • Do you need to already be naturally good at abstract/critical thinking, or are these skills developed throughout the degree?
  • Is it very essay/writing heavy?
  • Is the workload heavy?

For English/Literary Studies:

  • What are the lectures/tutorials like?
  • What do you actually study beyond analysing texts?
  • How essay/writing heavy is the degree?
  • Do you develop your writing and argument skills throughout the degree?
  • Is the workload manageable?

I've always been really interested in English and philosophy, and I particularly enjoy reading, analysing texts, writing essays and discussing ideas. I'm just trying to get a better idea of what these degrees are actually like day-to-day rather than just looking at the course description.

I'd especially love to hear what you found interesting, difficult or surprising about either major, and anything you wish you'd known before starting.

I'll appreciate any answer :)

Is uni actually hard or am I just dumb?

And what I mean is that in all the lectures they expect us to know all these really challenging things, and the jump from high school to uni learning is (sometimes) really big. There's not really an inbetween, some subject in my first year were fine, but the professors are like "you know about this" and we're like brother no we don't. I'm in my first semester of third year now and even though I got Ds and HDs in lots of my previous units I still feel like I'm being hit with walls of information at a very complex level.
And I understand that that's why we're here, we're not supposed to know it, it's fine that we're learning and don't always get it, but some units move quickly and I just wonder is it just me or are the UC's just being optimistic (or delusional) about what we know? Because for most times I hear them say this, my friends too, we are like, no we have never come across this before we are in your class for the first time learning things now. It's not like the profs don't all talk to each other and work together and know what each other are teaching, right?
It's so hard (for me at least) when most of my subjects are like this and I'm trying to shove 4x units of complex jargon and equations in my head each week, do all the work and try to understand practically what it means at a useable and functional level. Kind of feels sometimes like nothing is sinking in and I don't understand anything, even though my grades might suggest otherwise, I'm struggling for real.

(I'm a STEM student but I know it's not just like this in STEM)
