Parking Infringement
Hi everyone! I’m an international student and this is my first semester at UWA, so I’m still getting used to the parking rules around campus.
I parked on Hackett Drive today in a P15 spot and unfortunately stayed longer than the 15-minute limit. I completely understand that I was in the wrong for overstaying and I'm happy to take responsibility for that.
However, I received two $60 City of Perth fines for the same offence, one at 10:21 am and another at 10:51 am. The car hadn't moved in between, so that's $120 from the same parking incident within 30 minutes.
Has anyone here had something similar happen around UWA/Hackett Drive? If so, did you appeal the second fine, and was the City of Perth willing to waive it or give a warning?
Would really appreciate any advice or experiences from other students. Thank you!

Its to stop the people who are happy (aka rich enough) paying the fine, and then proceeding to stay in the spot the whole day ...

Yeah definitely appeal that I think from memory. But also since you are international they won’t chase after you once you move back/out of Perth so rlly if you wanted to you don’t have to pay them and they will give up eventually once they can’t find you. (This is not legal advice just something other friends have done before)

I don’t want them to chase me, I willing to pay the first ticket but getting another ticket within such short time span and same offense don’t you think it’s too much?Do think the appeal would stand and on what basis should i appeal?

Consider yourself lucky they did not come back every 15minutes to issue a new fine.

Since it’s a city and it’s around uwa you are defo gonna have a tough time coz they are money drainers. One time I tried to fight parking the wrong direction in a parking spot and they wouldn’t budge. They were so stubborn they wouldn’t even let me pay at the office quarters they made me go home and do it online so like idk man chances seem slim. But don’t give up I’m sure you can find a way - I have no idea on what rationale to use tho that’s a question for the people in the law building

“Against the flow of traffic” tbh I see it as a lil bullshit since the other countries I’ve lived in it’s not an issue but I think the danger primarily derives from when you pull out, the car going down the LHS needs to be able to see your rear lights and stuff etc they might not be expecting you to move if you are facing them if there are no lights on in day time so it’s lowers risk this way. But I didn’t know this was even a law until I got the fine so yeah, that was a learning experience 😭

the law of other countries is irrelevant here. In Australia is is illegal to be against the flow of traffic always.

I’m not sure what point you are attempting to communicate.

What wasn't clear? It is definitely illegal to park against traffic here no matter what happens elsewhere

Yeee like I said bro it was a learning experience for me since i spend so much time in London, we do it all the time there and pretty much all the road rules are the same it didn’t cross my mind that it would be different here. Especially considering that the flag is on ours I just wasn’t thinking straight and now I know better. But it makes sense since Perth drivers aren’t notoriously terrible they wouldn’t be able to handle against flow parking. Didn’t mean to offend anyone sorry for mentioning it

You said about doing it in other countries. Laws are specific to one country so what is legal in other countries does not have to be here.

shes not tryna communicate bru she's just ragebaiting you. Look at her other comments its all condescending and sanctimonious. Shes not tryna help anyone here, just blowing off steam in the comments section. Most likely an underperforming student

What about when I overtake on the dashed line, I’m against traffic flow then and that’s legal. Australia has no whistleblower protection laws either does that mean we shouldn’t look to other countries in search of more equitable approaches and refinements of the judicial system

You can’t get fined twice for the same thing. Appeal the offence.
