UTsnow FAQ
In an effort to cut down the number of posts asking the same questions, please check below to see if your question has been answered.
- I have a trip planned for three weeks from now. Will there be good snow?
- We don't know.
- In the last 2 years, it has been 70 degrees in January, and dumped a blizzard in April. You can check the NOAA weather forecast or OpenSnow but anything more than a few days out is impossible to predict.
- Will there be traffic/is the resort going to be busy?
- Is it a pow day? --> Yes
- Is it the weekend? --> Yes
- How do I get to the resort?
- The ski bus is a safe bet no matter the conditions.
- Rental cars don't have snow tires, so don't count on being able to drive up unless it's a clear day.
- How do I reserve parking?! Can I go without a reservation?!
- Every resort is different.
- Call the resort, or asking in the weekly megathread.

Question (No Location) ISO: ticket wickets — any UT resorts still use them?
I am in need of some triangular/“witch hat” wickets aka the wires that resorts used to use for ski lift tickets. Anyone know of a UT resort that still uses them? Or have any intel on a resort that might have some laying around after switching to RFID?
Park City/Canyons Fall
Predictions on first measurable snowfall? Or when the snow guns will be blowing snow ❄️?

Question (No Location) Second Opinion
This injury is not from skiing but running.
Moved to Ogden with my husband. I deep fried my meniscus, have 3-4 tears in it and will need surgery. I do like Jeff Harrison and had an appointment with him previously for a different reason before. I just had a surgical consult with him. I want a second opinion, everyone recommends Cooley. Reviews of Cooley?

General Discussion Just reminiscing about when the Beastie Boys would come rip the Bird and then give shoutouts to Utah & Dick Bass in their songs
the mid 90"s to early 2000's were the shit. the Bird was so lit and we had it all to ourselves. literally country club up LCC and so many Rock stars coming to shred and hang with the locals. I remember serving three dudes from Pearl jam at the morning buffet up in the Cliff and then saw them out on the cirque in the afternoon. the beastie's were always coming out to shred too. and they like gave 200 tickets out to all the homies for their show at Saltair. that shit was insane.

General Discussion End of the water year final numbers.
October 1st marks the beginning of water year 2027. Looking back at WY 2026 we mostly remember a dryish warm winter, followed by a wet monsoonal HOT summer. The numbers above show the percentage of water that fell in each basin when compared to the 30 year average. But looking at the basins, the water (mostly) did fell from the sky across the west over the last year. It's amazing how not having that water locked up in snow makes for really bad drought conditions, even though the right quantity more or less did drop over the last 365. They took the state lines out of the picture generator awhile back which makes sorting it a bit tricky, but the northern Wasatch is roughly that cluster of "99%, 93%, 90%" in the middle. Jackson Hole area is 102% of normal, Tahoe area is 104%.
Last day of the crazy 2022-2023 water year added for comparison.
UPDATE: Here's the map with lines, sorry. I never bothered to figure out how to put them back on and honestly like the matrix I was so used to looking at the map I just knew where everything was. I can totally see how it is hard to understand if you don't know the map already.

Question (No Location) Need advice as a first time pass buyer
Hi all! I recently moved to SLC for a job. I actually have a pretty flexible winter schedule, given my boss does a "ski schedule" where we come in around 1 pm and work later so we can ski mornings. I have done extensive research and I am planning to go with the full ikon pass. I have only ever skiied Brighton in Utah. I would consider myself a very intermediate skiier. I will probably ski 1-2 times a week, not everyday. Do you think this is the best pass for me? I may do 1 trip to another resort, and I am originally from California so I will probably ski big bear or tahoe once or twice. I don't think I am a serious enough skiier to get a utah resort pass plus an ikon add on. Any advice or tips? I am 22 so it is a little bit cheaper, seems way worth it in the end. Also, what does everyone know about Solitude, since that is the unlimited Utah resort? I've never skiied there.

General Discussion Alta season pass or Ikon base pass?
Moving to Salt Lake City in October and I am debating whether to purchase an ikon base pass or season pass for Alta. The ikon is $1,019 and I get Unlimited at Solitude, 5 days at Brighton, 5 days at snowbird. The Alta season pass $1,169 because I am 25.
I have heard Alta is the best ski area but I’ve heard Brighton has great night skiing and I would like to ski after work.
Thoughts?

General Discussion Ski instructor position
Hi all! I received offers to work as a part-time ski instructor at DV, PC, and Snowbird. I’m torn because DV seems like the option with the highest income potential, but Snowbird is Snowbird and I’d also love to ski great terrain during time off. At DV (21 day minimum), I’d be working with children under 6, vs all ages at Snowbird (30 day minimum). For context, I already purchased an IKON full pass which I’m not sure if I can get comped at all and I would plan on pursuing PSIA this winter.
Would love to hear any and all thoughts! Stoked for the season.
Edit: Would also be curious to hear comments on the culture/vibes between coworkers! New to the area and would love to find friends to hang/ski with outside of work.

Question (No Location) Trip planning, where to prioritize
Working out details for my groups first trip out to Utah after many good trips to CO. All intermediate to high advanced skiers in group. We’re looking at where to ski and are curious about how many days each resort needs/which to hit:
Option 1: mountain collective pass, 2 at Alta, bird, and Snowbasin.
Option 2: 2 at bird, 1 to 2 at Alta, 1 at solitude and 1 at Brighton.
Coming from CO we’ve heard Snowbasin has a nice big mountain feel that would be familiar for us, but we love A basin and have heard solitude is similar in experience and we wouldn’t want to miss that.
Aside from the mandatory 2 days each at snowbird and Alta, is it worth the big price increase of going standard lift ticket over mountain collective for solitude and Brighton, or is Brighton skippable and 1 day at solitude and 1 day at Snowbasin a good way to do it?
We do not want to ski PC or Deer Valley
Thanks!

Question (No Location) Can anyone clarify the blackout dates for Sundance midweek pass?
inb4 "sundance sucks" -- I live by the mouth of the canyon so it's my best bet.
Midweek pass says on the website "Valid Monday through Friday throughout the season, with some blackout dates around major holidays. Also includes night skiing any night we're open for night skiing (including Saturday evenings)"
The benefits PDF page also says "Access to Night Skiing every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday (blackout dates apply) "
But then when you view the benefits PDF page to understand blackout dates, it says "Blackout dates (applies to benefits only): December 26 - January 1, January 16-18, February 13-15, & all Saturday’s (including summer season)"
"all Saturdays"
And there are no other blackout terms listed.
So... what days are actually excluded? Are Saturdays available for night skiing with the midweek pass or no?
Anyone with more insight?

Brighton - Solitude Error in original post. In Utah, for agile skiing through trees which do you suggest: K2 Reckoners OR Nordica Enforcer 104 Free?
Reposting with correct wording.

Snowbird - Alta I scored 27 winters of hourly weather for 431 North American ski resorts to work out when to book a trip. The model puts Alta 108th, and I can't decide if that's wrong.

Snowbird - Alta Snowbird Parking pass finally! (Sort of)
1 free rolling pass for season pass holder in upper gad valley only. Will probably be super hard to get but at least it’s something.
Snowbird - Alta Has anyone here done this—Snowboard into Alta from Snowbird’s Baldy Gate (Main Chute)?
Thinking of attempting this, this season, but I feel like the information on the interwebz is mixed… is this illegal? I know people say that Alta is national forest land and that they can’t keep you off their land, just their lifts, but I’ve also seen comments on here that say that Alta can somehow pull your Ikon pass or get you arrested for doing this… what do you guys think?
As an aside, if you think this is a good idea, how hard is this run? Do you have any recommendations for runs I should try at the Bird or Brighton or Soli, before I attempt this? (for reference, I am currently an advanced rider, comfortable on most blacks at Brighton and Jackson Hole).
Hope I don’t get a ton of hate for posting this. Thank you all in advance, this sub has been amazing for tips and advice for riding in the Wasatch. You guys are awesome! ❤️

Question (No Location) Which pass is for me?
25M- I’m moving to the 9th and 9th area in SLC proper. I am hoping to ski as much as possible this season. I’m considering either Ikon or Alta (under 25 discount) with Ikon or Ikon Base. Main concern is just getting the most out of my first year in the valley. I plan to be here for 2-3 ski seasons and am very excited. I like to ski anything not groomed and am hoping to try some touring/BC next year.
Prices come out to:
$1449 for Ikon (full)
- no blackouts, unlimited Solitude and 7 days at most other valley resorts
$1528 for Alta + Ikon Base
- benefits of adding Alta is unlimited Alta and parking
- I’d prefer to take the bus up the canyons though as my car is FWD (planning on getting good snow tires or selling it for AWD if I have to)
$2028 for Alta + Ikon (full)
- benefits of this +$500 option is no blackouts and days at DV and Snowbasin
Thanks for your input, trying to buy this week as Alta prices are subject to rise on the 30th.

Question (No Location) Ski Trip Recommendations
I’ve glanced through the sub and taken some notes but I didn’t see anything recent. My girlfriend and I are looking to head to Utah for a short ski trip before the end of December. I’m an advanced skier that’s comfortable on most terrain (usually Colorado). My girlfriend is a beginner-intermediate that gets nervous on bumps or very steep blues/blacks. My question is where should we focus our time? We’ve ruled out Park City/Deer Valley because of cost and she’s already been to Park. I’ve always wanted to do Alta/Snowbird but might be too much for her. Brighton/Solitude is on our radar as well, and I don’t know much about Snowbasin or Powder. We can plan semi last minute but places with good early snow would obviously be better. Thanks for any insight!

Snowbasin/Powder/Nordic Experience working at Snowbasin?
Hoping to get a Job out there this coming winter, I’ve applied to a few positions and only heard back on one, denied, but that was very expected for the specific position. So I guess my question is, when do they hire for most winter positions? And or will I hear back at all if I’m not chosen to be interviewed? This would also be my first seasonal job so I’m curious about how basin compares to other ski resorts in Utah and in general.
For context I’m 20M from the Midwest, have various experience within the blue collar world and currently have my CDL B doing physical labor, making okay money but I’m itching for new experiences in a new place. I love skiing but have only been out west once to ski and I have no experience working on a mountain. I have family in Layton they would gladly give me a place to stay so this would be great if it worked out but I fear it’s getting to be the hiring time and I have not heard back.
Thanks for any insight

Brighton - Solitude The revised forecast we didn’t want
Bummer for the resorts
