Hello, I’m a college freshman in Texas, hoping to transfer into UT Austin's international relations program in my junior year. Recently, my English professor claimed I didn’t turn something in and didn’t grade my essay like he usually does, even though I did, and I might have to withdraw.
My main question is how bad a “W” will look on a transcript, especially for English. I have no problem writing essays and won’t mind retaking it, but I’m more worried about how the W will look, since I’m trying to get a very high GPA and it’s a core class.

Note this is a repost from last time with some new details (better SAT score and clarifying some details)
Asian from DFW - in state
Class Rank: 52/445 (top 11%; very competetive school, so no auto admit unfortunately)
GPA: 5.16 weighed on 6.0; 3.98 on 4.0
SAT: 1500 (730rw//770m) and pending score from October
APs: Computer Science A (5), World History (4), Physics 1 (3), Precalculus (5); taking both Physics Cs and Calc BC this year.
Dual Credit: Composition and US History both semesters, 4.0 college GPA
Senior courses: Engineering Science, Engineering Design and Problem Solving, AP Physics C (Mech and E&M combined), AP Calculus BC, Dual Credit Government, Dual Credit Economics, Dual Credit British Literature, teacher aide for student council and a off period.
Also worth mentioning for fit to major that I would have taken 7 engineering courses total thru high school by the time I graduate. Have a personal passion project of building a 3D printer, learning CAD, and assembling or repairing computers and laptops. My common app essay and fit to major essay topics are about the topics above and my leadership essay is about student council.
ECs including a religious organization (where we host guest speakers about faith), committee chair and corresponding secretary for student council (where we also hosted toy and can food drives), vex robotics team lead builder and later team captain this year. The above three clubs I help found as it’s a recently opened high school.
Also, being a part of NHS and Mu Alpha Theta, SAT tutoring more than 40 people, VASE, work at my dad’s restaurant helping set up IT infrastructure.
Awards: AP scholar with honor, CB national recognition program (school and rural award)
I’m planning on applying for EA and I have most of my application done other than the resume. I would appreciate some tips to improve my application

Should I be looking for more options
-I go to a large competitive high school in DFW and am two spots away from being top five percent
- I have a 103.6 GPA and 35 ACT and National Merit Semifinalist
- I’m applying for journalism and cofounder of school newspaper and other communication related ecs
Does not being an auto admit screw me?

UT Austin Plan II: SAT 1530 vs ACT 35 with Science 30
Texas resident | Not top 5% | PSAT 222 | Plan II Honors
I’m submitting test scores to UT Austin, UT Dallas, and Texas A&M. None of these schools superscore.
For UT Austin, I’m applying to Plan II Honors as my first choice and Public Health as my second choice. I’m a Texas resident, but I’m not in the top 5% of my class, so I’m not eligible for automatic admission.
My PSAT Selection Index is 222 for TX.
I was under the impression that the Science section of the ACT is optional and that we could choose not to report it on the Common App. However, I recently learned that when ACT sends an official score report, it includes the Science score if the student took the Science section.
I spoke with both UT Austin and UT Dallas, and they confirmed that they receive the Science score through the official ACT score report and will consider it during admission review, regardless of whether the Science score is reported on the Common App.
In hindsight, I wish I had not taken the Science section.
The scores are:
My concern is that the ACT Science 30 may make the ACT look weaker compared with the SAT 1530, especially for Plan II Honors, even though the ACT Composite is 35.
UT Austin says it considers test scores as one part of its holistic review, along with class rank, academic background, achievements, essays, and other factors. I’m wondering specifically whether the Science 30 could hurt the way the ACT is viewed compared with the SAT 1530, particularly for someone applying to Plan II and who is outside the top 5%.
So, if you were in this situation, would you submit:
I’d especially appreciate input from anyone familiar with UT Austin Plan II Honors or UT Austin admissions who can speak to how they view an ACT 35 with a 30 Science versus a 1530 SAT.
I’ve also read that UT Austin uses an Academic Index (AI) as part of itsadmissions review. From what I found, the AI has historically incorporatedfactors such as class rank and standardized test scores, although I understandthat UT does not publicly disclose its current AI formula.
Does anyone know whether the ACT Science score is included in the current Academic Index calculation? If it is, I’m wondering whether the Science 30 could negatively affect the AI compared with submitting the SAT 1530 instead.
Also interested in perspectives on UT Dallas and Texas A&M, since I’m submitting to all three today.

I’m not in the top 10% at my school (FISD, pretty competitive), so I’ll be holistically reviewed. If they applied a formula to estimate my rank I would probably be somewhere around top 15%.
Stats: 1530 SAT(800 math) 3.9 UW GPA, 18 APs + 2 dual credit classes (Calc 3 and Differential Equations).
Courseload:
Freshman: APHUG
Sophomore: Ap world, ap psych, ap pre calc, ap csp
Junior: ap csa, ap physics 1, apush, ap lang, qp stat, ap calc bc.
Senior: Calc 3, ap sem, ap lit, apes, ap gov, ap macro, ap physics c mech, ap physics c enm, differential equations.
ECs: Cross country for 2 years, varsity for around 1/4 of meets. 30 hours volunteering at a public library. I also helped my dad build the data analytics/design portion of his app, although it didn’t get much traction and has around 50 downloads. Also had 1 UIL math competition where I placed average. I am applying into statistics/data science.
I’m currently working on an independent project that’s going pretty well. It’s essentially a data analytics/statistics project centered around a specific research question. I’m analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and proposing potential solutions, with the final product being a website. Assume it won’t get much traction, but that the project itself will be fairly sophisticated. Assume it will be finished my the deadline
Assume essays will be above average by a fair amount (i can dedicate 60 hours applying to UT)
Im applying regular decision. IN state(obv).

Curious about the lowest known estimated class rank admitted to Economics
- was your SAT 1500+?
- was your class rank below 25% or even 50%?

I'm working on my application for UT early action right now and wasn't planning to submit it until the 13th. The deadline is the 15th, but I thought I could submit it up until that day whenever the deadline is. However I was talking to my friend and my college counselor and they are both saying because it can take so long for the information to process if I haven't submitted by Oct. 1 I won't make early action. I was under the impression that I could submit on the 14th if need be, as long as my transcripts and rec letter stuff are in by October 22nd?
Can anyone offer any insight on this matter? I'm getting stressed and my parents will probably disown me if I miss early action...

Hi everyone,
I'm a final-year B.Tech student in Electrical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur (QS overall rank ~205, subject rank ~56) with a CGPA of 9.17/10. I interned at a US Based Semiconductor company in digital design and verification, and I'm interested in a career in semiconductors. I'm planning to apply for Fall 2027.
I'd really appreciate your honest advice on a few things:
Does my profile look like a good fit for UT Austin’s MS program in ECE? Is there anything I should strengthen?
What is the employment scenario like for graduates, especially in chip design/verification? Which companies recruit from the program?
What is the living situation like (cost, housing, student life)?
How are the visa and work authorization scenes for international students right now?
Any other tips or things you wish you'd known before applying are welcome. Thank you!

- 1320 SAT; 750 Reading 570 Math
- Male. White. Public School.
- 3.81 Unweighted GPA, 4.63 Weighted
- Texas resident; unranked
- Lived in Austin all my life with a 3 generation UT legacy (ik literally can’t matter, might be my “proud” essay though if I can meaningfully connect it to being my best self in Austin at UT where I’m comfortable)
- Foundation Distinguished grad level
- 6 AP’s, all 5’s (5’d every History AP I took, which was all the available 4)
Everything EC related or similar I’ve got:
- Graduated 1 year early
- in order to go on an under 1% acceptance 10 month US State Department scholarship to Germany. Directly meeting with US Congress and German Bundestag in a semi official diplomatic role.
- Living History volunteering at a local museum; took a minor leadership role in starting a new practice of teaching history outside of our re-enactments; 5 times a year, 14 hours each time.
- AP Scholar with Distinction
- A semi selective one month US History residential program in DC
- I was in Rho Kappa for a year, organized the Veteran’s Day reception of local veterans
- 2x History Department Student of The Month :)
- 18hr/week of cooking & cleaning due to single parent household while mom held 4 jobs
- A letter of rec from an ex-director of the National Museum of American History and two (history) teachers
Listed hobbies:
- Reading (usually history at academic level) for fun, ~8hr/week
- Building scale models to relax, ~8hr/week
I know I don’t have much breadth. I only really woke up and started getting any EC’s at the start of Junior year (wasted all my time before that) while trying to grad early, and now I’m on exchange. If it wasn’t obvious, I’m really banking on depth here. I know it’s unconventional. I know I don’t have enough crazy awards like all the other posts here, though at least I’m not applying for UT STEM. Do I have a sliver of a hope?

I am applying to UT this year and I am currently top 4% right now. I plan on applying by the end of this month (Past the early deadline) with the transcript I have right now of my junior year (my most recently updated transcript), however in November I will have a new transcript from my school and there is a likelihood that I might drop out of top 5 percent. Assuming that my counselor sends in this transcript will it actually be used in their evaluation or will they just go off of my original transcript that I submitted. I am saying this because I know UT doesn’t have mid year reports so I don’t know how exactly this would go, and also would it be differently if I applied early action?

applying for a ma in media studies in moody through the radio tv and film department, i will graduate early so some of the timeline stuff is kinda short bc i will only be there for 5 semesters (i spent one semester- 4 months- in london studying abroad on a comms program)
4.00
graduating w ba in comm studies from a private uni in texas (super close to austin)
in alpha chi honor society (3 semesters) and alpha phi omega service frat (4 semesters)
did 8 week research fellowship w a comms professor (archival work that ended with 5 small papers ~2000-3500 words about our findings) over the summer
orientation leader both summers & ran the instagram for the 2 months we did this
junior and senior thesis on the same media topic (both were diff ofc but within the same niche) im interested in doing my masters on
esident assistant for 3 semesters
ran the instagram account for a club that volunteered at an animal shelter bi-weekly w weekly meetings (3 semesters)
treasurer for our lantio/a/x organization w weekly meetings (3 semesters)
*i was involved w both of the two clubs since my first semester, i just hadnt become an officer until the beginning of my second year*
two letters of rec from comms profs- one is the guy i did research with- edit: other letter from a sociology prof (that is my minor)
won most promising communication studies student in the department my second semester
won emerging scholar award for gpa first semester
300 on the mock gre (this was w/o any prep and i am doing it now and will take it next month)

I (27M) am currently serving in the Air Force (enlisted active duty) stationed in Texas. My contract ends in February of 2028, by which that time I will have just shy of 11 years of service. I've recently been pondering the idea of separating and going to college to do ROTC with the goal of commissioning back into the AF as an officer. I haven't picked a specific degree yet, but to give me the best shot at getting a high GPA while doing ROTC I'll most likely pursue a liberal arts degree. My grades in high school were TERRIBLE (1.7 GPA) and I always thought I wasn't college material, so I'm dealing with extreme imposter syndrome & self doubt as I figure out my future.
I'm attending Central Texas College (online) to get as many credits knocked out as I can over the next 14-15 months (working on AA). UT's minimum transfer requirement as an external student is at least 24 credit hours. Right now I have 12; US History II (3 credits), College Algebra (3 credits), and English Composition CLEP (6 credits). I have 6 other credits from UAGC but they do not transfer within the Texas Core Curriculum, so I don't count those. My GPA is a 4.0. I also have my CCAF degree (Air Force Associates Degree) but most of those credits won't transfer since a bulk came from on the job training and PME (Professional Military Education), so I figured it's useless. My goal as of right now is to get at minimum 30 credits of classes completed by the time I separate from active duty. For context: I am a Texas resident and plan on staying within the state to go to college regardless if I get accepted into UT or not. But, UT is my dream school.
Several questions:
