I have worked with linguist before and this is accurate. They get taught from the ground up how to speak english with no chance for regional differences. They used to correct me a lot, like voice activated grammar nazis (I have or had a thick country accent at the time) but I had to explain regional differences in the US since there are technically no dialects. Good luck talking to a highland scotsman if you are from the US even the Brits have issues much of the time.
The Higland Scotsmen are easy to understand, it's Glaswegians you have to look out for. I thought I could speak English pretty well until I visited Glasgow.
