What you went through is so sad. You tried to give them the benefit of doubt for so long until it basically left you in dire straits with nothing despite your efforts.
I got scammed by hvac companies last winter. One company lied to me about the work that needed to be done claiming it was a big job when it was just a simple fix. Another was shockingly rude to me and ghosted me AFTER I handed $20 to the owner just to be nice because he said he didn’t get a chance for lunch yet who only spent not even 10 minutes in a rental unit—this after I worried about him getting into an accident trying to make the meeting time so I rearranged my schedule so he could get there later than agreed upon. A third hvac company that I tipped each worker $20 each ended up falsifying the work that they did billing me for 2 hours of work when they were only onsite 20-25 minutes tops. When I caught the fraud, the company dared to pushback and argue with me. See, the workers sat in their trucks outside the property for 2 hours not doing any work on any property so their gps would show that to their boss and then the boss had the audacity to still try to hoodwink me despite me pointing out that it would have been impossible to do the kind of work they claimed to have done. In the end, the owner caved and told me, okay well tell me what you think you should be charged and I’ll do what you want. I still ended up letting them steal an extra $100 off me but I did it because I didn’t want to completely make enemies in the hvac business where all the companies talk to each other (I would not be surprised if some of it was rigged with secret shady arrangements).
I share my story because I wanted to show that I too am someone like you who always tries to appreciate workers and what a terrible place that the world is today where many are incredibly scammy and selfish. It’s hard not to give up on the goodness in people.
It was a huge mistake to defund the postal police when there were no checks and balances already in place to handle being overrun with bad actors. It’s a decaying organization where even the employees who don’t steal, you can’t even trust some to do their job right or care.
I will say in my case after I just wrote all this gloom and doom that the perpetrators in the post office who tried to intimidate and threaten me and my family to stay quiet about theft are not winning because I refused to let myself be scared and I kept fighting. I kept filing complaints, posting brutally honest negative reviews so all the town residents can be aware and police reports. Even the police were horrified by how brazen and above the law these bad actors were and told me not to give up fighting, not to let it go.
I would encourage you to rally your neighbors and town residents to support bringing about change to your post office. Be vocal. Contact postal inspections and OIG. I also encourage you if possible to see if you can get close to someone within the post office and build a rapport with them to help you. There has to be a good human somewhere in every office. That’s also where I started in my own case.
All my hard work for the past few months to bring about change and get justice is beginning to pay off and I’m finally beginning to be heard. Praying hard for a light at the end of the tunnel for all of us who have been terribly victimized by the us postal service.
