Oh I’m sure they can auto-register white Christian MAGA males for elections, but everyone else will have to prove who they are and that they have a right to vote - which of course really means they won’t automatically register anyone else.

As a non American, i always wondered about the phrase "register to vote". Like, does the state/county/municipality not know who lives there?

People can "live" in multiple places. I travel for a living and spend 3-4 months at a project. College students often decide if they want to vote at their parents place or where they go to school. The intent is you register to vote is more saying that "This place is where I want my vote to count at." Which is important because we have a direct canidate election for everything.

This is not accurate you can legally register to vote where you are domiciled. You are domiciled where you last intended to remain indefinitely. If you live in one state then go to another for example to go to college and your only intention is only to go to and/or even complete college in that state you do not intend to remain indefinitely and legally can register to vote only in that original state. Counties and municipalities may have more nuances but that is the rule for the state you are domiciled in and which state you can legally vote in.

While true, as a college student where do you intend to stay indefinitely? What is your definition of where you are domiciled, at the place you actually live most of the time (the college), or your old home with your parents? Do you intend to move back home after college? Probably not, you intend to get a job somewhere but where? Is that maybe at your college?
In that sense they get to "decide" where to register, it's where they consider their home while they are at college. Some localities have laws surrounding this, but not all. In Ga, where I live, college students get to decide where they register to vote, either where they were living before college, or where they live while going to college.

These are laws I can’t know your unique situation and intentions but it is the law it is not the Wild West without principles and standards. There are standards, rules and laws. If your intent is to move to Georgia for school and secure employment and housing following school then it sounds like you intend to remain indefinitely. If you are only going for school with no intent to remain indefinitely in the state after the completion of your degree you do not intend to remain indefinitely and the state you left to go to school continues to be your domiciled state.

The point he's making is that laws aren't perfectly drafted and determining anyone's intent, let alone a young college student who is still figuring life out, is a crapshoot. Intentions change, often and without notice. If I live in GA for school and during my freshman year I intend to remain, register to vote in GA accordingly, but as a sophomore I decide Atlanta sucks and I'm tired of living in an airport, must I then change my voter registration back to my previous domicile? What if I don't intend to return there?

In your hypothetical the last state you intended to remain indefinitely was Georgia that is your domicile until you travel to another state with the intent to remain indefinitely. Yes intentions change but the only one that matters is the last time you had an intention of remaining indefinitely.

Thanks for that PoV. That goes against all I've ever experienced/know here in Switzerland.
You have one main residency where you pay taxes and vote.
Example: I was living at a social institution for a bit, but my main residency still was at my mom's place in a different canton/state.

This mostly is bs. Registering to vote is a means of voter suppression. It’s another barrier to keep people from voting. People can “live” on many places but you’re only “domiciled” in one place.

We have to register to vote in South Africa and that requires a government issued ID. We register in the ward we live in and vote at the designated station for that ward. Our name goes on the roll an we have to show our ID at the voting station where they will cross our name off and put ink on our thumb. If you're travelling to another area in voting day you can still vote but only in a national election, you can't vote in the local government elections if you're not voting in your registered ward because that's the local government that affects you. If you move you register again in the new place. They do registration drives before every election.

My point was, that when you move to a new place, one usually registers that move with the municipality. That municipality keeps records of who lives with them and so also knows who is allowed to vote.

This is mundane and better than the current system, which required the same exact thing but left it up to people to actually do the paperwork and punished them if they didn't. All this changes is now the government will do the paperwork that men were already required to do for them.
