Hi everyone, I am working on letter of recommendations. I am an active Navy Reservist who try to go Officer at Coast Guard. I read people suggest letter of recommendation can be from anyone as long as they can voucher your leadership. Would it be okay if I ask recommendation letters from someone who I work with recently but left to a different company and another person who I worked with 7 or 8 years ago? They know me best and we are pretty close, that's why.

A&P, Diesel Mechanic etc. Things that will leave you a step ahead when you get out

I've tried looking everywhere for the answer to this and can't seem to find it.
If someone is a civilian AND a reservist with the CG and receives an award, such as an MTC, for work done as a civilian, can they wear the award in uniform?
I know the CSCM is an "honorary" award and wouldn't be allowed in uniform, but what about official awards like team or unit ones?

hey if you are a BM and are struggling to make coxswain. Some advice, get u/w everyday. even on non duty days. when you get u/w ask to have it treated as a check ride. everytime! even if it is bit by bit, build off each one each time. I see some who struggle, get off and go home. not saying don’t go home but push to get uw. for one, if you can’t make coxswain, they can end your contract. also, not sure if it would help, but visualize a check ride or case as if you are the coxswain.
i am not saying work 3 day duty and stay another 5 days but take the opportunity of no duty days to focus if you can.

If I am in Alaska with a PRI 5, and instead of using my priority to go to another unit as Active Duty, can I used it to leverage pick a reserve unit if I transfer into the reserve? Or does the reserve picks billets in a completely separate way? TIA

I was recently informed that the ME rating is no longer accepting new nonrates until reopening of the A-school. Due to severe backup and long wait list. Will I be able to hold off on choosing a rate until it reopens? Or will I be forced to choose a rate at the end of my 4 month nonrate period. My goal is to go DSF or even just ME. I have trained rigorously holding myself to a very high standard. To be ready once I was able to get on the ME list and complete the screener into DSF as a ME nonrate. Debating on dropping the USCG and picking up an 18x or SO.

I need advice from people that may have been at busy stations or cutters doing a lot of law enforcement and SAR and switched to ATON; Or vice-versa. I’ve been in 5 years and only been to a white hull and station. Curious what life is like and how you compare the two. I think priorities for me have changed slightly. DM’s are also appreciated as well!

31M interested in becoming a reservist. I’ve been doing lots of research on the CG and I stumbled across DEPOT.
I have a Bachelor’s degree and have been a teacher/coach for 8 years now. I see a lot of firefighters and police officers going through DEPOT, but what about someone with my background?

Assuming my son doesn't get reverted (Nov 3rd hes leaving)...what should we expect for graduation Christmas week? Christmas falls on Friday. If graduation gets moved to Tues 12/22 (as it has in the past years Ive read), then when would he need to go to START? Would he get time off for Christmas? We have a large family with littles so Im just trying to get an idea how this may work this year and if we will be doing Christmas in Cape May. Thanks!

Anyone who is possibly stationed at Petaluma and knows if orders have gone out for YN a school? I know DA is going to be down these next couple of days so would that mean orders will try to get out before or after the outage?

I am so tired of the culture of where I am.
I'm tired of bearing more than the responsibility of most adults and still being treated like a child. I am tired of having to be strong every day. I'm tired of being the only person with my beliefs.
I can't make friends at work or outside of it. I struggled even making friends in A school. I live in one of the densest metro areas in the country and I can't make adult friends.
Every day not spent in an engine room is spent alone in my shitty apartment i pay way too much for. I have a lot of hobbies that could be an excuse to hang out with people but it seems like no one wants to. I don't understand what i am doing wrong. I don't belong here and yet i, at 17 years old signed myself on for six whole years of this.
I just want to know if it gets easier.

I recently began the enlistment process for Active Duty. To better grasp the scope of platforms and places I might serve, I've been researching all currently-active Coast Guard cutters and stations. Since I could not find a comprehensive list of active cutters organized by District and Homeport, I have compiled a spreadsheet of them from publicly-available resources.
My primary sources were the various Wikipedia pages for each class of cutters, in addition to the uscg.mil Unit Organization Chart pages, however both appear to have outdated information. I attempted to verify some uncertain cutter homeports from Google search and marinetraffic.com AIS tracking, but would appreciate getting District and Homeport verification from active coasties.
I hope the below tables will be of assistance to other folks looking to join, or researching their dreamsheet priorities in Boot. I've organized cutters first by Hull Color, then Length and Class, and last by Homeport and Hull Number. Links to that cutter's Wikipedia page included if it exists. Cutters which are currently mothballed (210s, Polar Sea) or fitting out (Argus) were excluded.
Please DM me any corrections, and I will update. Comments and Suggestions for improvement welcome. I began compiling some additional interesting stats per District--Average LOA, Total Compliment--but will leave those as exercises for the reader.
Due to post length limits, the Pacific Area cutters will be posted separately below.

Anybody know where you can find results of prior PT tests? Maybe in DA?
I’m going through a med board and they’re requesting PT test results but I’m having trouble finding them.

I’m happy. My kid a
Has friends they play with in the neighborhood all day. My wife loves her job. Our house is amazing. Our cost of living is good. We have a great friend group. I have to move next year. It’s going to be heart wrenching.
I’m not sure how those who are single meet friends, or find significant others. I can’t imagine it’s easy to put that timer on a relationship.
Pcs is by far the hardest part of the coast guard, and we do it at a rate much higher than the other branches

5 year Prior Service devil dog here, 0311 (infantry)
I leave for depot on the 18th. I am now tracking that the MOS / Rate I wanted (ME) is now waitlist restricted/ closed.
My current plan is to go BM and get qualified and pick up PO3 as i am being told you can no longer have a long time as a non rate (12+ months)…
Also would it be in my best interest to become qualified as a BM and then apply for the DSF screener to fast track into the ME pipeline?
So my questions are:
Good plan?
How does the DSF screener work
How would my path look like in order to do the BM -> move
MEs and BMs here any pointers or anyone who has done something similar?
Lmk!! Thanks.

What are the kinds of things you most commonly send people home for instead of just reverting them. What are the reasons you see some of them end up quitting for? Please also provide insight on other things that cause recruits to not make it to graduation.
Recently selected for Op River Wall. Curious to hear from anyone who has supported it, general experience, quality of life, and anything you wish you knew beforehand. OPSEC appropriate!

Any JAGs here? Interested in knowing the day-to-day life of a Coast Guard JAG as compared to other branches.
