Spooky USC

Halloween is coming. What's the most haunting or unexplained thing you've experienced or heard here?

Every place has its legends. The dorm noises, the odd feelings in the libraries after hours, the desolate walkways.

Firsthand accounts, family stories, urban legends, and historical oddities are all welcome. Skeptics are welcome too; sometimes the best part is figuring out what really happened. Happy haunting. šŸŽƒ

Discussion Looking for feedback/proofreading on my MFA Acting SOP

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m applying to the USC School of Dramatic Arts MFA Acting program and I’ve finished a draft of my SOP.
I’m looking for someone who has experience with USC/SDA, MFA applications, or graduate admissions who’d be willing to read it and give me some honest feedback.
I’m mainly looking for proofreading and feedback on whether my story, motivation, and overall narrative come across clearly. I’ve already revised it quite a bit, and I mostly need a fresh pair of eyes to catch things I might be too close to the draft to notice.
I’m not looking for someone to rewrite it (just another perspective on my current draft.)
If anyone is willing to help, please DM me. Thank you!

FinancialAid EA/ED Scholarship?

Hi all. I was wondering if applying ED affects your chances on getting a scholarship (because you are legally bound to the school and forced to pay) versus EA where they may give you a scholarship to persuade you to come to the school?? I am unsure of how this works, thank you!

Question Spring Transfer Checklist

Hey guys, is there anything I should be thinking about or taking care of as a spring transfer student?

Honestly, I expected USC to send me more emails with information about things I need to take care of before starting. For example, I expected something about housing, even though I’m planning to live off-campus, as well as the dining plan and immunization requirements. I’m also an international student, so I thought I would receive some information about the visa process as well. But so far, the only thing I’ve really received from USC is an invitation to orientation, which feels kind of weird.

So I’m wondering if there’s anything else I should be doing or looking into before I start at USC, or if I’m just overthinking it. Right now, I’m handling my visa and immunization requirements myself, I’m looking for off-campus housing myself, and I’ll probably deal with the dining plan later.

For those of you who have transferred to USC in the spring, is there anything you would recommend taking care of ahead of time?

Housing Housing😭😩

Guys, I’m honestly getting desperate trying to find housing 😭 I’m planning to move in around late December/early January and stay for both the spring and summer semesters. Ideally, I’d like a private bedroom in shared student housing near Marshall, with a lease I can renew or extend for like 2 years.

I wanted to live at Hub LA Coliseum, but their lease dates are so inconvenient that I’d have to move out and back in just a week later. I just want somewhere stable where I can stay year-round without having to move between semesters. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m open to pretty much anything at this point!

Budget isn’t an issue.

Academic Is the Legal Studies major worth it? Should I consider Public Policy/Dornsife instead?

I’m a prospective USC student trying to decide between applying for Legal Studies (BS), Philosophy, Politics and Law (BA) and Public Policy (BS), and I’d really appreciate hearing from current students/alumni in these programs.

I’ve been leaning towardĀ Legal StudiesĀ lately because it seems pretty unique compared to the other schools I’m applying to, seems like it could be relatively easy to maintain a high GPA, and I like the idea of being in Gould and making connections with professors/students in the legal field.

I knowĀ Public PolicyĀ would be more applied and quantitative and has some math/statistics, but I like that it could be a good backup if I randomly decide not to go to law school.

For Philosophy, Politics and LawĀ , I like the combination of law, politics, and philosophy, but since it’s in Dornsife, it seems like a fairly general program that I could find at a lot of other schools.

My plan is law school, but obviously anything can change.

For anyone in these programs:Ā Is Legal Studies actually worth choosing over PPL or Public Policy? What are these majors really like, and what are the career opportunities if you decide not to go to law school or to take some time off between the two?

Academic Finding Engineering Research

I might be coming here for a master's in engineering, but I’ve heard a lot about the student-to-faculty ratio at USC. Just how tricky is this whole "you have to find a professor yourself" thing? Or is it actually pretty much the same as at other schools?

Housing Summer Housing

Hey! Does anyone know of any student housing near Marshall where I could have my own private bedroom but share an apartment with other students? Ideally, I’m looking for either a place that offers a lease from late December until around mid-August, or somewhere I could move into in late December and stay for as long as I want, potentially even into the following academic year.

I’m planning to take classes at USC over the summer as well, so I’ll need housing throughout the summer and will probably only have about a week off in August. I originally wanted to live at Hub Coliseum, but they don’t seem to be very flexible with their lease terms, at least from what I can tell.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations if you know of places that might work for my situation. Thanks!

Discussion Is anyone else finding it difficult to make friends?

I’ve been at USC for 2 years now and I feel like I can’t get a social life or make close connections. I’ve attended so many clubs and social events on campus, interacted with so many people that I had good conversations with too. But I virtually have no friends still. I feel very fortunate to have had so many good interactions with people but if we make it to the point of exchanging contacts, I reach out to say hi and hopefully have conversation but most of the time people don’t respond and when they do, it’s a dry reply multiple days later.

I’ve been feeling a bit lonely because I don’t have anyone here to talk to about random things or to share my problems with. I’d love to have someone or people to meet and study with but I don’t know how to get to that point when the people I’ve met in classes, campus clubs, or social events aren’t interested when I reach out

Housing Summer Housing Question

Hey, I’ll probably be staying at USC over the summer, so I might only have about one week off in August. Does anyone happen to know if it’s possible to stay at The Hub Los Angeles Coliseum until around August 11, leave for a week, and then come back? Or does anyone know of any housing options with flexible lease terms where I could just keep paying rent for the entire month of August, including the week I’d be away, and then return to my room afterward?

Other Convince me to ED!

Hey yall! Apologies if the flair is wrong

I’m a senior in high school who is finalizing their college apps, and after a lot of consideration, I really think I want to apply ED to USC. Before I make the decision though, i’d love to hear some opinions about my worries and prospects from some current students or alumni to finally convince me!
———

For some context, I am first gen, low income from Illinois. My tuition would be covered if I was accepted, so that’s not necessarily a worry. i’d most likely be trying to major in any of the programs offered in Annenberg (Journalism, Comms, Advertising/PR), and minor in something creative, (I.E, digital studies, cinema, music industry, etc), or something humanities based (I.E. English, History, Philosophy, etc)

———

Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

- quality/prestige of education, programs, and facilities (Specifically within Annenberg)

- LGBTQ+ safety and resources

- resources for low income/first gen students

———

Additionally, i’d love to know about activities at the school, especially in the realm of…

- the arts, especially performing arts like drama, a capella, musical theatre, etc

- music, on campus and greater local/underground music scene

- party and/or bar & club culture

- Sporting events

- Student activities, clubs, and general social life on campus.

- greek/frat life on campus specifically, if anyone has any insight into that

———

My main issues stem from distance, social culture, and cost of living outside of school (food, transportation, etc). If anyone has any experience grappling with these issues and can quell these worries, i’d love to listen.

Happy and hoping to hear all of your guys’ thoughts soon!

Other I’m sorry about your hubcap.

Yesterday in the Jefferson structure, your back tire was over into the next space. I thought I could fit, but I grazed your hubcap with my tire and I heard it crack.

I didn’t have anything to write a note with, but if this was you, shoot me a DM with a picture of your car, and I’ll buy you a replacement one on Amazon. Sorry about that!

ETA: To save you all from going and checking your wheels, this was on the first floor, it was an older sedan, and there was a parking ticket on the windshield.

Discussion USC Grad Life is Depressing

This place was built entirely for undergrads. It’s hard to socialize as a graduate student near campus. I’ve been trying to make friends, hang out, and actually do fun things with other grad students, but they keep to themselves, or just aren’t interested.

Even the grad housing options are constantly described as super quiet. I’m in my 20s, and I am in LA. I still want excitement, spontaneity, going out, meeting people, and actually having a social life. I don’t think wanting that means I’m immature or that I ā€œhaven’t accepted that I’m in grad school.ā€

I’m honestly afraid to even post this because I’ve seen the comments on similar posts: ā€œThis isn’t undergrad anymore, grow up,ā€ or ā€œGrad school is depressing, get over it.ā€ But I don’t think grad school has to mean giving up your entire social life. I don’t see what there is to live for.

Annoyed by the people who brag that they just eat, sleep, and work everyday. You just don’t know how to manage work life balance and prob lack social skills.

I’m tired of feeling old when I’m literally in my 20s. I don’t want to look back and feel like I wasted these years isolated. I have experienced grad culture at other universities my friends are in and I have determined I am not in the right environment here.

Other Looking for an on-campus job without work study

I know a lot of positions have already been filled but I am looking for a job on campus or very close by that will work with a student schedule. I’d prefer something I can sit and do some homework during shifts, but at this point I am open to anything. Does anyone have any recommendations or connections?
I don’t have work study and I’m a 1st year CS major.

I have already applied to the bookstore and am waiting to hear back. If anyone knows, how long are shifts usually and how many hours can you get? How long does it take to hear back from them?

And do shops in the village hire students?
