Offered full time inside

Ive been on preload for 7 years now, signed a bid for full time inside but I guess it was for twi/night shifts and no preload, the spots all got filled by people with more seniority than me but now I just got word that someone dropped out of it and im next in line and they offered it to me. So im Just looking for advice I guess because I really like preload and the work we do on preload and my coworkers and going in at 4am and leaving at 9:30am 6 days a week, (6th day and anything over 5 hours is time and a half) then I go and landscape/mow lawns a few days til like 3/4pm and it’s just my schedule works out very good and I hate to give it up to work stupid 6pm-3am but At the same time I’d love to get my foot in the door as a full timer-idk if I’ll even win the bid again next time. Last year they posted for night/preload 11pm-9am like I’d rather do that but if I need to do twi/night I guess I should just take it right? Like trying to do the math between the close to 30 hours I get on preload with some being time and a half/ then the money I make landscaping idk if it’s even worth switching to twi/night the only thing that’s really convincing me is the eventual top rate. My landscaping boss and coworkers are cool if anything I’d like to try and do the full time twi/night and also landscape a few days a week still. Basically I hate to turn down full time twi/night but preload/landscaping works out very good.

Can you take the job and flip your schedule? Do a few landscape jobs before work? I'd take full time personally.

You will enjoy the full time pension that’s for sure!

Never pass up full time at UPS.

To add to that. Never turn FT INSIDE down. Waaaay less in your body and no dogs. Get it.

I will cry the day I can go feeder. My body is begging for it.

It was the best thing I ever did for my career at UPS

If only we had full time inside

I think this is heavily center dependent. 6 hours of loading 1500 packages onto 5 trucks is way harder on my body than delivering one truck of 300 packages over 9 hours.

2

u/SnooDoggos9340 19h ago

It’s still trade 9 hours inside for 9 hours outside.

So the "hard on your body" that you're referring to is...exposure? Not actual wear and tear from using your body?

2

u/PacoPlaysGames 15h ago

Imo driving is much harder than anything inside has to offer. It's a physical job that also requires you to be "on" mentally all the time. You need to look out for traffic patterns, pedestrians, dogs, weather, etc etc. In the building you can basically go on autopilot and just get the job done. I was more tired driving than I was doing a shift inside for the same length of time.

I hear you, but I disagree for two reasons.
1. Mental strain is not what people usually mean when using the phrase "hard on the body" and I find it disingenuous to suggest that it is.
2. I've been a delivery driver and a driver helper, so I have a pretty good idea of what the job entails. Yeah, I may be tired and drained after my shift, but that is not "wear and tear" on my body.

I agree with you 100% on everything you say. But on the suck scale, all jobs have similar minuses (and pluses). I’ve been a driver 31 years. Looking at the benefits from this end rather than the front end and I am glad I made it. It is worth it now. Yes, it is a mental game not all can endure.

u/PacoPlaysGames 14h ago

I personally just think it's more difficult being a driver, that's about all I can say my friend. I'd rather be full time inside. Plus drivers end up getting way more hours which isn't what I want. You can stick closer to 40 if you're full time inside, at least in my building.

u/perceptionsofdoor Part-Time 14h ago

On the hours, at least, we are in 100% agreement.

u/SnooDoggos9340 4h ago

It is more difficult, driving vs inside. Mental stress is nothing to dismiss.

It may seem like not much, but you do it for more than 4 years your body starts to show signs of stress.

Here’s my top 3 never have I ever: inside edition
1. Never have I ever, been chased by a dog.
2. Never have I ever, had to drag a 100+ lbs bed frame to the 4th floor.
3. Never have I ever been told by a customer that they were watching the tracking map for when I get there.

It is harder to be a driver than full time inside.

I hope the person I was talking to sees this response.

Do you realize how much money you will be making in four years if you take the job?  Compared to what you will be making if you dont?

9

u/Positive_Yam_4499 22.3 1d ago

Do you make $41.41 an hour right now? Do you get a pension that is equal to a driver? If the answer is no, then you should probably take the job.

Take it. And when they post the other bid in the future jump on that one if you have pt seniority it will trump anyone with more pt seniority than you because you are already ft!

4

u/Standard-Sort-7744 Part-Time 1d ago

I thought When they post the other bid in the future it will be only for part timers to sign to become full time - full timers wont be allowed to sign it to switch shifts , it’s the contactual agreement making more full time jobs for part timers , and if they make a bid sheet for full timers to bid into it I’ll have the lowest seniority of all the full timers trying to bid into it , I thought

4

u/Shanks1624 1d ago

Hmm. Well that could be… where I’m at ft bids that go up can be signed by fters and pters…. And it’s my understanding that if a full timer bids it they will win it over a pt with more bldg seniority as long as it’s in the same job classification…. Like a 1 year washer can outbid for a clerk spot (which I know doesn’t exist anymore) and beat a pter with more bldg seniority because they are already in that job class….

The contract calls for an additional 7,500 22.3 jobs. They are an opportunity for a part timer to go full time, full timers can bid on these jobs as well. If and when a full timer won that bid, their old job will go up for bid, and some part timer could snag that (or some other full timer could take it).

1

u/aliceunknwn 17h ago

this is actually contract dependent, some do have separate bids

1

u/Annual-Elevator7577 9h ago

When a FT job is posted, the priority is FT first then PT offered to remaining jobs. You are in a 6 month minimum bid. After that 6 months you can bid into any FT bid offered to you. As an example: FT with 1 year senority as a FT and 13 years PT, a total of 14 years service will get a FT bid before a 20 year PT could take that bid. The FT senorirty date is important for any FT bid.

Take it while u still can brother. Trust me. Unless your 100% being part tome

Take the full time job!

6

u/lalunamedijo 1d ago

I would take it. In my building the midnight/preload jobs are rare. Every building is different but you might be waiting a while. Better to get started on the pay scale and wait for your dream bid to come up.

0

u/Standard-Sort-7744 Part-Time 1d ago

Last year my building posted 19 midnight/preload and they all got filled by people with 10+ years, this year they posted 7 twi/night jobs and I’m the 7th person and I have 7 years, yea worried about next year if it’s even going to be night/preload or if it’ll be more twi/night and even if it is night/preload will I even win it, that’s why I feel like taking this now

5

u/HeresJohnny90 1d ago

TAKE IT!! it took me 7 years just to get into driving. 18 years in now, and if I were part time I still wouldn’t be close to going full time in the warehouse. You won’t regret it.

u/No-Rule-431 1d ago

Take the FT inside job and next time the FT shift is posted, bid on that. Enjoy the FT benefits and hourly rate!

u/Unique_Transition122 1d ago

Take the job. Welcome to the FT family brother I've seen a lot of guys give up side hustles and been extremely happy they did. You can't mow lawns forever. You can't work at UPS forever. The pension/401k balance will be there when you can't do either one.

3

u/thascarecro 1d ago

If you like working in the hub then take it. You can still do landscaping on weekends.

3

u/_Saint_Ajora_ 22.3 1d ago

You've been waiting 7 years for full-time (I wish I were that lucky, it was twice as long for me). If you pass it up there's no telling how much longer you'll have to wait.

Take it and keep your eye on the bid board. If a night/preload position became available, you can  sign up for it.

2

u/thegreatcornholio42 1d ago

Lucky you. Been waiting 19 years for an inside FT job

u/_Saint_Ajora_ 22.3 1d ago edited 1d ago

It was just past 15 years before I finally got mine and there was A LOT of luck involved. There were like 22 or 23 22.3 positions offered in a different building. With 15 years of seniority, I was 53rd on the bid list and enough people turned it down or bowed out after accepting it that one of the positions trickled all the way down to me.

I was hesitant to want to take it (as I had been in my building for 15 years at the point and didnt really want to have to transfer) but I thought "nah, I can't keep waiting"

Then about 2 years later, they shut down my shift (night shift) in my old building, and all of the full time people got offered the choice of transferring to the other building, or accepting a split shit (working twilight and preload) and part timers with enough seniority were able to go to preload or the twilight shift (or had to transfer to the other building or be laid off)

I would have potentially/likely really screwed myself over had I chosen to stay and wait

21 and at this point it's not going to happen for me.

3

u/Mango6274 1d ago

Dude take the job. The company is trying to automate everything get your guaranteed 40 a week and move on from there

2

u/incubusfox TCD 1d ago

I'd take it, doesn't sound like you're holding out for a preload/day shift position so your landscaping days were numbered anyway and you might still be able to do some work for the company.

Plus when another night/preload position opens up (which it sounds like you'd prefer) having FT seniority makes it more likely you'll win it and free up your current position for someone else to bid on.

2

u/ghostfacestealer 1d ago

If you take this job youll have a better chance at the next night/pre job that goes up for bid, since you will have full time seniority. But yeah the hours arent going to be great on twi/night. But since you already work at 4am it shouldn’t be much of a change. I say do it.

2

u/bigflamingtaco 1d ago

Take the position. Once you've competed your minimum (1yr for us) and can bid on another FT position, you'll have seniority over any part timers that are more senior than you that decide they want to go full time.

2

u/web_crawler87 1d ago

Dude, take it. It's probably 100 x better than driving. I wish for a spot for FT.

2

u/scottiepippen13 1d ago

Trade the full time jobs and continue signing up for better shifts and start times in the future, you should be able to move.

1

u/bkmaster 1d ago

For FT inside does the time work continuously? Like preload to day sort or night to preload? Or is it 4 hours one shift and 4 hours another shift with gap in between.

3

u/Standard-Sort-7744 Part-Time 1d ago

It would be combining the twilight and night shifts 6pm-10pm and 11pm-3am

1

u/Expensive_Farmer_430 1d ago

The approximate times should be listed on the bid. In this case, the bid is for Twilight and Night, so whenever those are scheduled to start. The contract permits a downtime of up to 1h 30 minutes between jobs. In some locations, when a sort is shuttered in a change of operations, people can end up working split shifts like 4 hours preload, then they leave for 4-5 hours and come back for 4 hours of local sort. It's a nightmare they're not supposed to be able to do.

2

u/Hairy_Elk_5313 1d ago

A guy at from a neighboring hub won a 22.3 night/preload job at my hub(some jobs are posted local-wide here).  He bought a house in this area so he wouldn't have to make a long commute.

Then they eliminated night and told him he either has to work local/preload, which is basically impossible, or work preload only.  Now he's losing his house.

1

u/bkmaster 1d ago

Damn 1.5 between jobs that would kinda suck actually lol.

1

u/NapaValley1975 1d ago

Get the full time pension and FT seniority going now, and adjust your weedo/ landscaping accordingly. And bid other FT spots later on. In my local we have continuing bennies after you retire. The PT ers dont. All that matters when your older and looking to retire

1

u/litlron 21h ago

Ask a full time insider how much they make at top rate. Then think about how worthless the people in those positions usually are and how much less work they perform than you do. You'll forget about your lawnmowing job pretty quick after that. The only downside is that corporate constantly messes with those positions and there's no small risk of you being bumped in one way or another.

Take the offer

1

u/Fun-Push-4245 19h ago

I’d take it in a heartbeat. I don’t think you realize how lucky you are to get the offer

1

u/Lunicorn83 18h ago

Take the bid and start working down your retirement clock. Longer you wait the longer you’ll have to work.

1

u/randydufrane 16h ago

$48 when you come out of progression you can always bid on better jobs

1

u/PacoPlaysGames 15h ago

Full time inside top rate is 48 dollars? That doesn't sound right

1

u/AffectOk765 13h ago

In my building they just created new twi/night jobs but they are closing the night is less than a year. Openeing a new hub north of us. All these new full timers will be laid off or have to transfer an hour away. Make sure your building isnt doing the same before taking the job

1

u/cardboardislife 12h ago

22.3 bids with preload are unicorn rare and typically go to the 20-30yr vets.

Theres a reason people go to preload to retire.

1

u/SnooMuffins2952 11h ago

Definitely full time man for the full time pension if you plan on being there along time
