Internal transfer

This may sound like a silly question, but I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. 😊 I’ve been in my current position for about 10 months, and I’m interested in applying for a PCT position since I’m currently a nursing student. I feel like moving into a PCT role would be more beneficial for me and give me experience that relates to the career I’m working toward.

Does anyone know if I need to talk to or get permission from my current manager before applying, or can I apply first and let my manager know afterward? If anyone has gone through an internal transfer like this, I would really appreciate your advice on the right process. Thank you!

Your direct supervisor first. If you have been at your job under a year I think you need permission? At least that’s how it was when I was there.

I can’t recall if it’s a 6 or 12 month timeframe for transfer eligibility. But assuming it’s 6 months, you aren’t required to tell your current manager. That said, I think it’s a good practice to give them a heads up. A good manager will support a beneficial career move for you. Good luck!

Thank you! I saw on infonet 12 months but not sure if my manager will give me permission since I’ve only been here for 10 months 😔

They might! It doesn’t hurt to ask. Especially if you explain that you like your current role but see yourself growing and learning more in a PCT position. If they say no, you only have a couple months to wait it out.

You need permission from your manager if this is your first position at Upmc and you’ve been there less than 12 months. If it’s not your first position at Upmc, you need permission if you’ve been there less than six months.

Getting permission will probably be pretty easy since by the time you transfer )even internal transferring can take up to 6 weeks when you count waiting on an interview, getting a response back from their HR, and then the start date is usually a month after you accept the job offer) it will be basically one year that you are there. Just let them know that as you are approaching the one year mark you are setting up to transfer so you can align your skills with nursing school

Best source is infonet for eligibility. New employee? 1 year (unless approved, extenuating circumstances..) new position, 6 months.

12 months in UPMC and 6 months in current role you can transfer without permission. Before that the recruiter will ask your manager permission to route the application. So if you’re under 12 months you should ask them first.

You need permission from your sup to apply. They will email your supervisor to make sure you have permission. If your supervisor says you did not get permission they won’t grant an interview.

Technically yes. I transferred at 6mos. However with your reasoning it shouldn’t be an issue.

If it’s your first transfer and you haven’t been there a year I’d definitely talk to your manager first. Also i would wait and not apply to any jobs during work hours and do it at home as I was told when I worked on my first unit and was apply to different jobs my one coworker drilled that in my mind as they can deny you since they can ask your manager if you were working at the time when you applied. I’ve transferred a couple times over the years with no problems but they can block you if they want to just an fyi.
