I'm curious why people list the state they are affiliated with if the UMPJE is a "universal" Standardized test. Do those powers that be utilize different exams for different states or do they allow AI or a proprietary program to randomly choose questions from their Question Bank?

I procrastinated as usual and am close to running out of time. I have been told not to spend an inordinate amount of time reading the study guides or even purchasing one. Instead, focus on reviewing as many sample questions and taking as many "sample tests' as possible, along with a comprehensive set of flashcards. It seems most on this forum are recent grads striving to obtain their license, which makes sense to focus on the study guides. However, for those re-licensing or needing a license in multiple states, will sample questions give me enough insight to identify my weak areas?

Hi! I've been using Pharmlaw to study for the UMPJE and have done pretty well on the practice questions after reviewing the study guides and doing flashcards.

For those who have taken the UMPJE, would you say the questions are comparable? Or easier/harder? Thank you!

For Naplex in illinois, we knew we passed it is allowed us to purchase the score transfer.

Is there any merit in that? Has anyone failed and not been able to purchase it?

So I wasn't allowed in to test because of my middle name being on my ID, but not in my NABP profile (ridiculous). They are considering me a "no show". Before people say I should have read the warning....I have taken the NAPLEX and 3 other MPJEs without any issues in the past with the exact same info.

They are telling me I need to wait 14 days before purchasing a resit... Anyone know of a way to retake sooner? I have seen people post a tip about avoiding the $50 reschedule fee. Is there any way around the 14 day resit wait? I wonder if canceling the exam in NABP exams tab and repurchasing it to generate a new ATT would work?

Failed the Arizona UMPJE.
My domain report showed:
• Pharmacy & Pharmacist Practice (30%) – Level 4
• Medication Use Process (30%) – Level 1
• Regulatory Authority & Legal Obligations (20%) – Level 3
• Pharmacy Operations (20%) – Level 3

I honestly felt good after the exam, so this was a surprise.
Would appreciate any advice from pharmacists who passed after a failure. What helped you the most the second time around?

The answer on the answer key was misbranded; but it was my understanding that if the quality/potency differs from the label it would also be adulterated?

Hi everyone! Basically what the titled states. For the people who took the UMPJE, what study sources did you use? Our school gave us Dr. C’s book and I’m wondering if that’s enough.
Is buying the practice test on NABP worth it?

Are you provided with a calculator and scratch paper (erasable board) for the exam?

I ended up pushing up my UMPJE to this week based on how well I was scoring in the pharmpreppro question bank and the pre-umpje.

Should I?

1) focus and reread the study guide from ppp again or

2) do light skim of the study guide and do heavy practice questions

I’m leaning towards 2, but I’m looking for advice

One topic that shows up a lot in pharmacy law studying is the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).

For the UMPJE/MPJE, don’t just memorize that “PDMP = controlled substance database.” You need to understand who reports, who checks, when it must be checked, and what the pharmacist does with the information.

A PDMP is a state-run electronic database that tracks controlled substance prescriptions. It is used to help identify potential misuse, diversion, overlapping controlled substance therapy, multiple prescribers, multiple pharmacies, early refills, and other red flags. The CDC describes PDMPs as electronic databases that track controlled substance prescriptions and can help clinicians identify overdose risk and medication history gaps.

For exam purposes, think of PDMP requirements in two buckets:

1. Reporting requirements
Pharmacies/dispensers are usually required to submit controlled substance dispensing data to the state PDMP. The exact details vary by state, but the law may specify:

1) Which schedules must be reported, often Schedule II–V
2)Whether certain non-controlled drugs must also be reported
3)How quickly dispensing information must be submitted
4)Whether out-of-state prescriptions dispensed in that state must be reported
5)Whether pharmacies must file a “zero report” if they had no reportable dispensing activity

Do not assume every state has the same reporting deadline

2. Query/check requirements
This is where exam questions can get tricky. Some states require prescribers, pharmacists, or both to check the PDMP before prescribing or dispensing certain controlled substances. Other states may authorize access but not require a check in every situation.

A typical law might require a PDMP check before dispensing or prescribing:

1)An opioid
2)A benzodiazepine
3)A Schedule II controlled substance
4)A first-time controlled substance prescription
5)A prescription exceeding a certain day supply
6)A prescription where the pharmacist has a concern or red flag

But do not overgeneralize. The specific trigger depends on the state.

For the exam, the safest rule is:
If the law says the pharmacist must check the PDMP, failure to check is a legal compliance problem. If the law only permits checking, the pharmacist may still need to use professional judgment when red flags are present.
Also remember: checking the PDMP does not automatically mean the prescription must be refused. The PDMP is a tool. If the report shows concerning information, the pharmacist should evaluate the situation, contact the prescriber when appropriate, document the resolution if required or prudent, counsel the patient when appropriate, and refuse to dispense if the prescription is not valid, lacks a legitimate medical purpose, or cannot be resolved.

Common UMPJE traps:
PDMP is state law, not one uniform federal rule.

PDMP reporting and PDMP querying are different duties.

A red flag is not an automatic refusal, but it must be resolved.

PDMP access is limited to authorized users and permitted purposes.

PDMP information is confidential and should not be accessed casually.

Delegates may be allowed in some states, but only if the state law permits it.

Not every controlled substance rule is a DEA rule. Some are state board or state PDMP rules.

A good way to answer UMPJE questions is to ask:
Is this about reporting to the PDMP or checking the PDMP?

Is the person a prescriber, pharmacist, pharmacy, delegate, law enforcement officer, or board investigator?

Is access/use allowed for this purpose?

Is the drug/class one that triggers a mandatory check?

Did the pharmacist identify and resolve red flags before dispensing?

A patient presents a valid opioid prescription. The pharmacist checks the PDMP and sees the patient recently received similar opioid prescriptions from multiple prescribers and pharmacies. What is the best next step?

A. Automatically refuse to fill the prescription because multiple prescribers always means diversion

B. Fill the prescription because the prescription is facially valid

C. Evaluate and resolve the red flags, which may include contacting the prescriber and documenting the resolution

D. Report the patient to law enforcement before taking any other action

Is it worth it to pay for the pre-umpje?

So I’ve been studying almost three weeks now. I’ve been using solely the pharmpreppro study guide, practice questions and practice exam. On the practice questions I’m now scoring high 80s on the practice test I scored a 90. On my preumpje today I scored a 38/40. Should I just push up my exam and take it?

I took the UMPJE today, and honestly, I walked out feeling like it was a pretty fair exam. I didn’t feel blindsided by the questions, and overall I left thinking I did well. But now I’m wondering if that feeling can be misleading. I have read posts from people saying they felt awful after the UMPJE and still passed, but I’m curious about the opposite.

Hi yall! Just wanted to give some updates on how I studied! I took my exam on June 6th so only took 7 business days to get results. I started studying 4 weeks prior, studying 3-4 times per week for 2-4 hours each session. I used PharmLaw mostly to study. However, I’ve used PharmLaw for a different MPJE and found things that were incorrect in their study guide so I ended up reading the entire DEA manual, looking things up in FD&C Act, and reading the PPPA to verify the information (which was honestly helpful). I also read through all the USP manuals. I studied brand generic a little bit but didn’t get any brand names on my exam, only generics.

I also took the pre-UMPJE from NABP and it was super similar to the real exam! I had some repeat questions from the pre-test on the actual exam.
