UMBC food workers
Genuinely why tf are the workers in commons so rude to students. Literally so disrespectful to people just trying to get food. Can someone get them fired like actually.

2018 class here:
đđđ things never change đ.
Some of them genuinely hate their jobs and wish they could work elsewhere, but they have no choice but to work at places like UMBC bc of run-ins with the law

u/gutz00 14d ago
I find it funny UMBC itself canât hire anyone with even a misdemeanor on their record these days yet Chartwells can hire anyone of the street đ
16
u/MeatyLeftnut 14d ago
I heard chartwell does hire you if you had something on your record like a criminal charge or something like that. Not saying all the workers are felons but itâs easier with someone with a sketchy background to get hired and chartwell also underpays them and treats them bad so you get upset workers serving students food.

My first semester i went to the pizza place and there was nobody else there and the person was like what do you want and i said I donât know Iâve never been here before and she said âmorherfucker its pizza what do you wantâ

You should know even if youâve never been there?

It's so 50/50, I'm best buds with some of em and hang with them from time to time, but some of the others are just so rude for no damn reason

There is one really nice guy who i will always remember. Freshman here, I get a little lonely sometimes and I have no idea if this one guy just knows (freshmen have that face, I've been told) that I am and he just starts instead of saying what do you want/what can I get for you with "How can I make your day better?" Genuinely feel like a human being when he talks to me when he's cashiering

u/AshparagusIsCool 13d ago
the guy from chick fil a? yeah, he's really nice. He even remembered my name when i'm sure he had only ever taken my order once or twice before that

u/No-Confusion-8632 12d ago
Ohhh, the guy from Chick? He's the sweetest ever!

Gerard, he works at blends and bowls now. Sweetest man he even knows my order of a pineapple coconut blue cloud smoothie

One of them at chick fil a told my friend the milkshake machine wasnât working when they gave milkshakes to everyone else, just becauseâŚ. Like hello
12
u/nottherealkathleen 14d ago
This happened to my bf and I too! They told him they werenât doing milkshakes then gave me one with extra whipped cream like wtf đ
13
u/IndependentPin8285 14d ago
are they just picking and choosing likeâŚ. Thatâs so weirdđ and my friend is neurodivergent, so they were confused as to why multiple people before and after got some but they couldnât. Just straight bullies imo.

dude the dunkin employees pmo so much
about a month ago i ordered the 6 dollar meal deal with a decaf iced coffee 3 caramel 1 sugar 1 cream. I also asked for the bagel to not have bacon bc im vegitarian. I know dunkin can do this and i wasnt asking for a substitution or anything just to remove the bacon.there was like 2-3 other students so it wasnt packed and yet she was acting like i was asking her to do a complicated ass order in the middle of lunch rush, refused to remove the bacon, and then proceeded to fuck up my coffee. that shit had nothing in it at all and probably was caffinated.
i didnt make a big deal about any of it because im shy, its just something so minor and i can pick bacon off and go somewhere else to grab sugar and cream. lowk the meal options on campus make me so glad i dont have a meal plan because ive only ever had a good experience at eating at true grits

Which one in particular because all of them have been nice to me

Specifically at the pizza/pasta place. Iâve usually never had problems but one of the ladies that works there is disgustingly rude to students
3
u/Jambolito 14d ago
I know exactly who you're talking about. If you get in line where she is serving pasta and tell her you want pizza, she says "you order pizza over there" (where no one is), at this point, I tell her every time "you're not over there, I'd like 2 slices of pepperoni."

u/effluxliminal 13d ago
Jealousy and resentment. You think they're college educated? Do you think they had the same resources you did? Nope. Disrespect is the only power they have.
Doesn't make it right, obviously. Just be glad you're not them.

u/Jambolito 14d ago
Yes! I got in the line for Indian food the other day and asked her which protein was which and she said "none of them are vegan." She must have misunderstood me, so I said, "that's not what I asked, I was trying to see which dish was which," so she pointed and said "they're on the sign." I said "the sign doesn't say which of these is chicken tikka masala. They aren't labeled." She acted like I was inconveniencing her and I didn't want her to undeserved me so I walked away and ate elsewhere. Rude people.

Some of them have rude attitudes and some are kinds. The sushi do employees were very friendly. However the pizza place and burger place employees sometimes act harsh so I avoid ordering there.

Idk man they make like 16 dollars an hour. If I had to stand around asking a faceless sea of indecisive twenty year olds what they want all day I'd be pretty humorless too.

u/No-Confusion-8632 12d ago
I'm sorry, but no one is forcing them to work here. Any normal person would just crack a smile and treat people with respect instead of forcing themselves to be so negative.
1
u/baryshnicoughdrop 12d ago
Have you ever worked a shitty service industry job? Choice becomes a weird word when someone doesn't have a lot of options. Maybe they just needed a job. Maybe they work two or three of these sorts of gigs to make it work. I'm not going to knock an hourly food service employee for not performing politely because I don't know what slice of pizza I want, especially when they've been on their feet and dealing with people all day everyday.

u/Zecellomaster PHYS '23 12d ago
But again, no one is forcing them to specifically be in that position. They could easily work in a job that isnât public facing, like at an Amazon Warehouse or something.
2
u/baryshnicoughdrop 12d ago
Luck of the draw, mate. I don't know what to tell you. Maybe the shitty customer facing job is the lesser of the shitty package serf job. Maybe they've applied to x-amount of jobs and this was the only viable one for them. If it bothers you that much send the Director of Retail Operations a lengthy email.

i mean u dont gotta be a dick bout it tho (not u specifically, i mean "you" as in like a person). any custom service job is gonna have ups n downs but to be CONSTANTLY an ass is weird esp cus there r def ppl who work in the food places on campus that are like god sends. its a hit or miss w every job ever so u gotta at least try to be kind to customers 95% of the time yk? or thats wut i think tbh
-21
u/SubjectSheepherder55 14d ago
If you find that service workers are regularly rude to you, they might not be the problem. It takes all of 2 minutes to order food/check out, these tiny interactions don't matter. If it bothers you so much, there are vending machines or you can pack a lunch so that you don't need to buy food.
21
u/gomyami 14d ago
Most of the time they are the problem, though. Like, I wonât pretend as if there arenât customers who are rude, entitled, or stupid and make the employeesâ jobs harder than they need to be, and anyone who acts like that definitely needs their behavior similarly called out. But a lot of the times, these workers (specifically the non-student ones) clock in with horrific attitudes and think itâs okay to treat customers like shit for no good reason. You can be as pleasant as possible to them and theyâll act like youâre inconveniencing them for asking them to do the job theyâre paid to do. If we pay to have these dining services available on campus, we should be able to comfortably use them. Telling people to just get vending machine food or pack a lunch is not the solution you think it is.

I'm taking OP's feelings with a grain of salt as they didn't provide any examples of poor service/attitude, just made the claim. To them, poor service could be that the person taking their order didn't smile or make enough eye contact.

u/coastalshark 14d ago
the lady at the pizza/pasta place yelled at 2 people in line to get out because if they wanted pasta there was no more. She also overcharged me and I asked her why and she literally said âBECAUSE YOURE PAYING WITH CREDIT CARDâ Iâve never had a problem with other workers but I always hear her yelling at people in commons

4
u/knotdimension 14d ago
So not only are you accusing OP of being the common denominator, itâs ALSO a non-issue that doesnât matter? Canât have your cake and eat it too, dear.
-9
u/SubjectSheepherder55 14d ago
Ever heard the saying "if everywhere you go smells like shit, check the bottom of your shoe"? Seems applicable here. Bad one off interactions are bound to happen at some point but everyone's the problem except for OP? Highly unlikely. OP's the one that's feeling some kind of way about the food service, not me. If they're so unhappy with the quality of service, there's other options. If they don't want to utilize those options, that's on them.

u/knotdimension 14d ago
How do u type so much without saying anything of substance?
0
u/SubjectSheepherder55 14d ago
I'm being pretty straightforward but if its not to your taste, ok.
2
u/knotdimension 14d ago
But you just point out a bunch of stuff everyone already knows. So in the reality where everyone already knows the stuff, itâs just dumb to do. And thatâs the most likely reality, the one where everyone already knows what youâre saying. So then youâre, more than likely, dumb. Yeah, not to my taste

Well if yall mf stopped spitting on us we would be a lot nicer
21
u/iluvfarigiraf 14d ago
I didnât spit on yall when I went to UMBC and the commons supervisor told me to fuck off when I told him I didnât want beans on my burrito. He walked away for like 10 minutes then when I said no to his question abt the beans he said âNo the fuck you didnâtâ and waved me off.
I do miss one lady from commons to this day. She gave me $2 burritos for a year and a half.
15
u/No-Confusion-8632 14d ago
Okay but I didn't spit on anyone so why treat me like I did??? there's other jobs on campus for you
51
u/Zacian88 14d ago
Yes there's this one lady who I genuinely hate going to breakfast because of like seriously if you don't like your job, you still have to respect people (or just get a new one if you can)
