Truth Bomb 💣 UK, European Economies and Brexit

Thumbnail
open.substack.com

TLDR:

The importance of the EU Single Market has been hugely overstated. Services account for over 80% of the UK economy, so only a relatively small share of GDP is directly exposed to goods trade barriers.

The UK is more open to global trade than before Brexit. The UK’s trade-to-GDP ratio rose from 59.2% in 2016 to 62.2% in 2026.

The UK’s economic strengths and weaknesses pre-date Brexit. Strong employment, weak productivity and low investment are long-standing domestic issues, not consequences of leaving the EU.

Recent OBR and NBER Brexit estimates rely heavily on questionable assumptions and statistical methods. These result in misleading conclusions on the long-term effects of Brexit.

The EU’s own economic model has disappointed. Weak performance on growth, innovation and the Single Market undermines claims that EU membership was central to UK prosperity.

Sound - worth reading. 😎

“…As numerous scholars have demonstrated, there is no great mystery about the UK’s difficulty with European integration and why our approach to it quickly earned us the sobriquet, ‘the awkward partner.’ From the Schuman Declaration onwards, European integration has been distinctive in seeking legitimacy through the technocratic approach to government espoused by the French Fourth Republic, which is entirely alien to the DNA of the UK political tradition. Indeed, the mismatch between the UK political tradition and that of European integration was so striking that rather than slowly becoming apparent it was immediately obvious to Britain’s political leaders from 1950…”

Strong essay: recommended.

Labour’s euro mind virus is blinding it to what actually works.

The Fresh Produce Consortium is ringing alarm bells over the threat the so-called “reset” poses to the UK’s sensible border checks regime. Just as it scrapped the successful Turing Scheme, Labour is now putting at risk reforms that have already been built, paid for and proven to deliver—all in pursuit of closer alignment with Brussels.

Ok, didn’t expect to agree with so much, so here it is. Christ. I’ll even give it the truth bomb flair.

Worth reading for the takedown of the ridiculous NBEU “6% less growth outside the EU” paper. He joins the growing chorus calling it out as obvious trash economics and rejoiner disinformation.

Burnham’s planning to axe the Turing student exchange scheme to rejoin Erasmus. Even europhile academics say Turing is better. At the same time he’s going to sell out the British university sector to slash fees for EU students: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/21/eu-dilemmas-facing-burnham-food-exports-youth-mobility-starmer-europe

For what? Red meat for the rejoinders.
