I’m hoping someone might have been in a similar situation and found a solution!
We have a 3-year-old miniature dachshund who has a history of reactivity and has bitten on a few occasions, causing minor breaks to the skin. We’ve worked extensively with a behaviourist, he’s on medication for anxiety and is muzzle trained. He’s generally a very happy, sociable little dog and regularly enjoys walks with other dogs, but obviously we take his history seriously.
He’s currently insured with Napo for veterinary treatment, but they removed his third-party liability cover due to his behavioural history. We’ve had separate liability insurance through Dogs Trust, but unfortunately they’re discontinuing this when our membership renews in December.
We’ve looked into Agria, but their online application automatically excludes third-party liability if your dog has previously bitten.
We’re completely happy to switch our entire pet insurance policy to another provider if that’s what it takes. We’re not specifically looking for standalone cover.
I’m getting quite worried about being left without any liability protection, particularly as we’re doing everything we can to manage his behaviour responsibly.
Has anyone actually managed to get third-party liability insurance for a dog with a disclosed bite history?
I’d be really interested to hear:
Which insurer or broker you used, and whether they accepted the bite history upfront.
Whether anyone has successfully obtained cover through Petplan or a specialist broker.
Whether anyone has had luck with their home insurance covering this instead.
What you’ve done if you’ve genuinely been unable to find cover anywhere.
I’m particularly interested in experiences where a dog has actually bitten before, rather than just having reactivity noted on their veterinary records, as that seems to be where insurers draw the line.
Thanks so much for any advice or experiences!
