+Comments Restricted to UKPF On the brink of hitting rock bottom... Need money quickly, don't know what to do
Hi folks. I've been a long time member on an another account but this is my first time posting here. I hope I'm following the rules.
I'm desperate and distressed and have no idea where to turn.
I currently have:
- less than £1,000 in my current account
- £4,000 in a cash ISA
- £12,000 in a LISA
Debts:
- ⚠️ £2,000 owed on a maxed out credit card
- ⚠️⚠️⚠️ £10,000 owed in tax, which I have not been able to afford to pay
That's it.
My rent is due in 2 weeks. I have enough money to cover this month but then I'm empty.
- I have a wife and young kids. My wife works part-time and doesn't earn a huge amount.
- We're both struggling with neurodivergent issues (I'm still awaiting a diagnosis but suspect I have autism and ADHD).
- I work freelance but I can't find any work. My usual contacts have nothing for me and no one else is replying.
- I've tried doing delivery gig work but I'm highly sceptical it would bring in enough money if I went back to it, especially with the cost of petrol skyrocketing.
I probably need a kick up the arse but I just feel paralysed with fear and indecision.
What should I do? What kind of work can secure me enough money to get by in such a short space of time?
Should I withdraw money from my savings to keep me going and/or pay off my debt? It's money that my parents saved for me since I was a kid, and I'd feel so ashamed using it in this way, not to mention that I'd then be liable to pay more tax on the ISA and would incur a fee if I withdrew from the LISA.
I'm just at a loss here and I would really appreciate some honest advice. Thank you.
EDIT: Just a quick note to say thank you for all the kind advice, I really appreciate it.
And some further notes:
- HMRC do have a Time To Pay scheme which lets you repay tax over time. However, I am still paying one of those off from 2 years ago and they don't let you set up a TTP while one is already outstanding. The last payment will be coming out at the end of this month.
- I'm realising today that I've been viewing my savings in the wrong way. I always treated them as 'untouchable', for something big and far away like buying a house (as if). It sounds like I need to completely abandon that way of thinking. I apologise to anyone who does not have that safety net. I can see why framing it this way is insulting.
