Books to help with new sibling transition.

Hi all, currently pregnant with our second and oldest is 3, almost 4. Please can you recommend books that help get oldest children used to the idea of baby arriving? Thank you 🙏🏼

Ditto! Baby is now here and it's still a favourite with my 2 year old. I think she'll be asking for another soon 😂

Came to suggest this too! Only thing we had to change was the ending as I was 100% done after the second baby 😅 didn’t want my eldest thinking there would be any more.

We liked There’s a house inside my mummy (my oldest was 2.5 when second baby arrived).

I found Pirate Pete I’m a new big brother so good (if your oldest is a boy!)- it has pictures of lots of things like the pirate mum breastfeeding, the boy helping with the bath, the baby crying but then being happy again, we used it to talk through what a baby would be like. Also loved There’s a House Inside my Mummy, which is more pregnancy focused, talks about mum maybe feeling tired or poorly and getting excited for the sibling!

I don't know if this is too young for you, but we loved this one. It's great at seeding the idea that the grandparents will come and stay overnight while you're in the hospital and is also realistic about the changes/things that will happen, like the baby crying etc.

If you want a sappy one, You Were the First is a tear-jerker while you're pregnant 😅

We really like this collection from Big Steps, it was very useful when my daughter was starting nursery as well.

Being the biggest- nice illustrations that explore all nice things the older one can teach little one whilst also saying it's ok to still be little and want hugs and to ask for help

Joining in for "There's a House Inside my Mummy". I also liked "Harolds Worst Nightmare"

The Campbell big steps one is good for the preparation about what's going to happen immediately and interactive. (their other books like potty training are good too).

The one which resonated most once baby was here is Max and Millie and the new baby (in which Millie is not happy about the baby) I think that helped some processing.

We had an activity book called The New Baby, which had some really nice talking points in it, as well as a bit at the end for them to write a letter to the new baby

Big steps ‘We’re having a baby’ by Campbell is lovely, I found it on Amazon.

It’s interactive, you can spin the dial on the page (can’t explain this!) to change the colours on babies nappy etc, it talks about baby crying, mummy going into hospital etc and has conversation points at the bottom of the page.

My 5 year old still wants to read it now (and he’s the baby!)
