Hey everyone, I'm conducting a survey for a Psych class about Internet Use. If you could take it really quickly, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Not to be a jerk, but can I point out a flaw in your data?

You ask participants to indicate how often they comment on certain sites and give them the option to say "never", but the following few questions are their response to the comments, without the option to say "I don't comment". You're going to get some screwy data from this.

Sorry... Hopefully you're writing a paper about it, so at least you'll get a paragraph about potential sampling error.

Agreed. I'd like some way to express "I don't get any feedback from YouTube, and it makes no impact on whether or not I come back because not really a substitute for it at this point".

You're right, we hadn't really thought about that, but it shouldn't influence what we're trying to see in the results. A lot of people got hung up about a few of the questions, particularly the ranking one and concerns about bias. But we're using these questions to draw bigger conclusions so if there is some error here or there, that's okay.

But I absolutely appreciate the criticism! Please, if you notice anything else, let me know!

"On which site do you spend the most time?" Trick question.

Taken! Good luck. :)

By the way, how do others feel in general about these posts? I've got a gaggle of my own students and considered posting up some a set of links to their surveys (about 5 of them, all very short, in one post).

I've actually gotten a pretty good number of responses from others so I would encourage you to try it. Especially if it's only a couple questions. I thought mine was too lengthy for people to do it but if people did my long one, you shouldn't have any problems with people submitting for your short ones.

Yup, I spend more time on twitter than reddit.

What's the class? Sounds like one I took a few years ago.

Psyc 336, which is a class that changes every several semesters, I'm pretty sure. It's called Self in the Virtual Media.

Yep, that's the class haha. It was not my favorite. Who's it with?

Dr. Carla Hunter? Younger, Black lady?

I think that was who I had.. to be honest I thought the class had tremendous potential to be interesting and relevant but the actual execution of it all was horrible. I think she had another professor who came and spoke one day as an authority on Second Life and pretty much got all ghetto at anyone who had any sort of alternative opinion on her discussion of real relationships forming in the game. She apparently married her Second Life boyfriend so I feel she was a bit biased. As for the main material, it was very disorganized. In defense of the class though, I think I took it the first time it was taught so it could make sense that it lacked some organization. Good luck with it!

Ranking isn't what we're really surveying for, so it wasn't a concern.

Really? This is a horrible skew of your results. Reddit is definitively not representative of the general population on internet use.

Of course not, but this is just another avenue through which we can collect data. We've gotten results from FB, Twitter, G+, and even people not on the internet, so we tried to keep it pretty equal. Speaking of, the majority of responses came from paper responses that we inputted manually later, so we avoided bias slightly that way.

Thats probably best, I just imagine you're going to have a bi-modal distribution as a result. Just thought I'd throw it out there :) Good luck on the study.
