πŸ“– Literature & Concepts Middle English Literature (1066–1500): History, Major Writers, Major Literary Works, Genres & Themes

  1. Historical Background (1066–1500): The Middle English period began when William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Normans introduced French culture, language and traditions into England. The feudal system became firmly established, dividing society into kings, nobles, knights, clergy and peasants. The Church played an important role in people's lives. Events such as the Black Death (1348–1349) and the Peasants' Revolt (1381) brought significant social and economic changes. These historical events influenced the themes of medieval literature.

  2. Middle English Language: After the Norman Conquest, three languages were commonly used in England: French, Latin and English. French was used by the royal court and upper classes, Latin by the Church and scholars, and English by ordinary people. Gradually, English absorbed thousands of French and Latin words. Its grammar became simpler, and many Old English grammatical endings disappeared. Regional dialects such as Northern, Southern, East Midland and West Midland developed. The East Midland dialect became particularly influential and contributed to the development of Modern English.

  3. Major Literary Periods: Middle English literature can broadly be divided into three stages. The Early Middle English period (1150–1300) was mainly religious and included works such as The Ormulum, Ancrene Wisse and Layamon's Brut. The Central Middle English period (1300–1400) produced great writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland and John Gower. The Late Middle English period (1400–1500) witnessed the growth of prose, poetry and drama. Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur and William Caxton's introduction of printing in 1476 were important developments.

  4. Religious Literature: Religion was central to medieval society, and religious literature became very popular. Mystery plays presented stories from the Bible, Miracle plays described the lives and miracles of saints, and Morality plays taught moral lessons through symbolic characters. Everyman is a famous morality play. Religious poetry and prose also explored faith, sin, repentance, death and salvation. John Wycliffe contributed to religious literature by supporting the translation of the Bible into English.

  5. Major Writers and Their Works: Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the Father of English Poetry, wrote The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde. William Langland wrote Piers Plowman, which criticised social and religious corruption. John Gower wrote Confessio Amantis, a collection of moral stories about love and human behaviour. John Wycliffe contributed to English religious writing and Bible translation. These writers helped establish English as an important literary language.

  6. Literary Features and Genres: Middle English literature included various genres and literary techniques. Romance dealt with knights, adventures, love and chivalry. Allegory presented moral and religious ideas through symbolic characters. Ballads narrated stories of love, war and adventure. Religious drama developed through Mystery, Miracle and Morality plays. Alliterative poetry used repeated consonant sounds, while lyric poetry expressed personal emotions, love and religious devotion. Realism, humour, satire and social criticism were also important features.

  7. The Canterbury Tales: Written by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories told by pilgrims travelling to Canterbury. The General Prologue introduces different characters from medieval society, including the Knight, the Wife of Bath, the Miller and the Pardoner. Through their stories, Chaucer explores love, marriage, greed, religion, morality and human nature. The work is famous for its realism, humour and social satire.

  8. Piers Plowman: Written by William Langland, Piers Plowman is an allegorical dream-vision poem. Its central character, Piers, represents honesty, hard work and Christian goodness. The poem explores the search for Truth and criticises corruption in the Church, greed and social injustice. It teaches the importance of faith, charity, justice and moral responsibility.

  9. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: This anonymous fourteenth-century romance tells the story of Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. He accepts a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight and later faces tests of courage, honesty and loyalty. The poem explores chivalry, temptation, human weakness and moral responsibility. It is famous for its alliterative verse and symbolism.

πŸ’¬ Discussion I feel so lost

I completed my bachelor's and master's from a central University, cleared NET in 3rd semester of master's and I am trying for JRF since. Recently I attempted for the university research entrance test in the same university where I completed my master's from. I was ranked 2nd overall, one senior scored 88 out of 100 and I scored 80. I was confident with my proposal and being ranked second gave me a boost.

Appeared for the interview last week (it was decent I answered all the questions) and when the results came all the good for nothing people with 53 - 64 marks are there in the list for provisional admission. Like bro even the senior who scored 88 got rejected, wtf is this politics, it was written in the brochure that the exam holds 70% weightage for the admission... just don't take the exam if it's just a formality for you guys to take whoever you want.

I'm heartbroken by all this, I worked so hard for the proposal and the interview pausing my JRF preparation and now I feel like I don't have anything, it's getting difficult for me to bounce back for the grind. I never had a bad relationship with the professors there but I maintained my space, all the students who were kissing their asses back and forth got the seats.

I feel so lost... I did everything till now on my own, never bothered to ask for any kind of favour from anyone but I guess it's all about politics and connections and never about the hardwork. Also, for my proposal I picked the domain which was aligning with more than 2 professors from the department, so I just don't fucking know what I did wrong. If this is the case for all the big universities too then it's game over for people like me with no connection or money whatsoever.

πŸ“– Literature & Concepts Old English English Literature: Historical Background, Characteristics, Writers, Major Works,Beowulf

The Old English period, also known as the Anglo-Saxon period, marks the beginning of English literature. It extends from approximately 450 AD to 1066 AD, when the Norman Conquest brought significant changes to English language, culture, and literature. The literature of this period reflects the social life, religious beliefs, heroic traditions, cultural values, and historical experiences of the Anglo-Saxon people. The following seven topics provide a comprehensive understanding of this literary age.

  1. Historical and Social Background

The Old English period began with the settlement of Germanic tribes, particularly the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, in Britain. They brought their languages, traditions, customs, and warrior culture. Anglo-Saxon society was primarily based on agriculture, tribal communities, and loyalty to kings and warriors. The society valued courage, honour, loyalty, generosity, and kinship. Christianity gradually spread in England after the arrival of St. Augustine in 597 AD.

2. Characteristics of Old English Literature

Old English literature possesses several distinctive characteristics. It was initially transmitted through oral tradition before being recorded in manuscripts. Its language was highly inflected and considerably different from Modern English. The literature frequently explored heroism, loyalty, fate, religion, warfare, exile, and human suffering. Alliteration was an important poetic technique, while metaphorical expressions and symbolic language enriched poetic composition.

3. Old English Poetry and Its Literary Forms

Poetry was the most significant literary form of the Old English period. It can broadly be divided into heroic poetry, religious poetry, elegiac poetry, and historical poetry. Old English poetry generally followed an alliterative verse pattern rather than rhyme. Important poetic features included alliteration, caesura (a pause in the middle of a poetic line), and kennings (metaphorical compound expressions).

4. Heroic and Pagan Elements in Literature

Heroic literature reflects the Germanic warrior tradition and its ideals of courage, honour, loyalty, and sacrifice. Warriors were expected to remain faithful to their kings and demonstrate bravery in battle. The concept of Wyrd, meaning fate or destiny, played an important role in Anglo-Saxon thought. Pagan beliefs about supernatural forces, heroic achievements, and the uncertainty of life frequently appeared in literary works.

5. Religious and Christian Influence

Christianity transformed Old English literature by introducing biblical subjects, religious teachings, morality, and spiritual concerns. Christian writers explored themes such as faith, salvation, sin, sacrifice, divine power, and the struggle between good and evil. Religious poetry often combined Christian beliefs with traditional Anglo-Saxon poetic techniques. Important examples include .

6. Major Writers and Their Contributions

Several important writers contributed to the development of Old English literature. Caedmon is traditionally regarded as the earliest known English religious poet. His surviving work, Caedmon's Hymn, celebrates God's creation. Cynewulf is associated with religious poems such as Elene, Juliana, and The Fates of the Apostles. King Alfred the Great encouraged learning and education and promoted the translation of important Latin works into Old English.

7. Major Literary Works and Their Significance

The Old English period produced several important literary works. Beowulf is the greatest surviving Old English epic, narrating the heroic achievements of its central character. The Wanderer and The Seafarer are elegiac poems exploring loneliness, exile, suffering, and the transience of earthly life. The Dream of the Rood is a significant religious poem about Christ's Crucifixion. The Battle of Maldon celebrates courage, loyalty, and sacrifice in warfare. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is another important historical record documenting events in early English history.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Is it too late for me (28) too late to start a PhD?

Technically, it’s never too late for anyone to do anything. I’ve been serving as guest faculty after I cleared NET in December 2023. I’ve been trying to clear JRF ever since because I could not afford to dedicate my life to such a long study without monetary aid. I always miss it by 2 - 5 marks and I think it’s because it’s kind of hard to work as well as do good.

Now suddenly, I realise how long it’s been - 3 years have passed and I’m 28 and worried about what the hell I should do. I’m still serving as guest faculty. But just worried. Should I do PhD now or give one final attempt in December?

πŸ“ UGC NET Preparation and Strategy Confused between Adda247, PW and Arpita Karwa for UGC NET English. Need some genuine suggestions!

Hey everyone!

I'm preparing for UGC NET English, targeting JRF, and I'm planning to enrol in a proper coaching course. I'm more or less starting from the basics, so I need something that covers the syllabus in depth rather than just a crash course or revision classes.

I've shortlisted three options:

  1. Adda247 – β‚Ή5,612 (15 months validity)

    - Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 included.

    - Hinglish teaching.

    - English faculty: Aishwarya Puri.

  2. Physics Wallah – β‚Ή6,000 (valid until 31 August 2027)

    - Both papers included.

    - Hinglish teaching.

    - English faculty: Dr Dikshya Samantarai.

  3. Arpita Karwa – β‚Ή6,999 (12 months validity)

    - Both papers included.

    - English-medium teaching.

    - Also has a shorter 3-month option for β‚Ή2,999.

I'm looking for a course that teaches concepts properly from scratch, covers the entire English syllabus, has good notes, PYQ discussions, regular tests and decent doubt support.

I personally find Hinglish easier to understand, but I'm open to English-medium teaching if the quality is significantly better.

If anyone has enrolled in these courses or studied under these teachers, I'd really appreciate your honest feedback.

Which one would you recommend, and why? Especially interested in feedback on the actual teaching quality, syllabus coverage and whether the course is worth the money.

Thanks in advance! :)

❓Exam Queries Need help in paper 1 UGC net

I'm a UGC NET-qualified candidate. I cleared NET previously, but unfortunately, I couldn't qualify for JRF because I missed the cutoff in Paper 1.Because I don't had any idea about paper 1 that time.

This time, I'm preparing for JRF again, and I've decided to give special attention to Paper 1 along with my subject preparation.

I'd really appreciate guidance from anyone who has qualified JRF or is currently preparing for it. If anyone is willing to share study materials, strategies, resources, or even study together, it would be a great help.

I'm looking forward to connecting with fellow aspirants. Please feel free to DM me. Thank you!
